ET-291 Two-Line Trim-Fone Telephone (430-0621) Installation Faxback Doc. # 34503 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION Each device that you connect to the phone line draws power from the phone line. We refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of your phone. If you are using more than one device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your phones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. NOTE: You must not connect your phone to: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key phone systems FCC STATEMENT This phone complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request, provide the FCC Registration Number and the REN to your phone company. These numbers are located on the bottom of your phone. INSTALLATION Complete the steps in this section to install your phone. CHOOSING A LOCATION You can use your phone as a desk phone, mount it on a standard wall plate, or mount it directly on the wall using two screws. Choose a location that is out of the way of normal activities and near the appropriate phone jack. For more information about the phone jack, see "Connecting to the Phone Line", below. MOUNTING DIRECTLY ON A WALL If you plan to mount the phone on a wall without using a wall plate, do the following: 1. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. 2. Thread a screw (not supplied) into each hole, letting the head extend 3/16 inch (5 mm) from the wall. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINE The mounting method you use determines how you connect the phone to the phone line. Follow the instructions for the type of mounting you've chosen. DESK OR DIRECT-WALL MOUNTING To use both phone lines you must have two lines with separate phone numbers You can use a two-line jack (RJ14C) that contains both lines, or you can use a separate single-line jack (RJ11C) for each line. If you use two single-line jacks, you must connect the lines with a coupler (Radio Shack Cat. No. 279-401). NOTE: The line that connects the phone jack to the telephone company must be twisted-pair cable. Otherwise, you might experience interference (crosstalk) between the two phone lines. If you have only one phone line, order a second line from your local phone company. NOTE: If the phone line does not use a modular jack, contact you phone company or local Radio Shack store. To connect the phone to the phone line: 1. Plug one end of the supplied flat modular cord into the modular jack on the back of the phone. 2. Thread the cord upward through the groove on the phone's base. 3. Plug the cord's other end into the two-line phone jack or coupler. 4. If you are mounting the phone on a wall, align the keyhole slots with the mounting screws and slide the phone downward. WALL-PLATE MOUNTING To use both phone lines, the wall plate must have a two-line jack (RJ14W) and you must have two phone lines with separate phone numbers. If you have only one phone line, order a second line from your local phone company. NOTE: If the jack is not a modular jack, contact your phone company or local Radio Shack store. To connect the phone to the phone line: 1. Plug one end of a short modular cord (Cat. No. 279-390) into the modular jack on the back of the phone. 2. Thread the cord downward through the groove on the phone's base. Put any excess cord in the opening on the phone's base. 3. Plug the cord's other end into the phone line jack. 4. Align the phone's keyhole slots with the wall plate studs and slide the phone downward. CONNECTING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the coiled cord into the jack on the side of the phone's base. Plug the other end into the jack on the handset. ROTATING THE HANDSET HOLDER If you are mounting the phone on a wall or wall plate, turn the handset holder so that it can hold the handset in place. To do this, slide the handset holder out of its grooves. Then, turn the holder one half turn and slide it back into the grooves. (YO/EB 9/3/96)
