If you do not follow these steps, your phone might not work when you first install it. If this happens, remove the batteries, disconnect the phone, and re-install the phone correctly. 1. Install the batteries (see "Installing/Replacing the Batteries" below). 2. Initialize your telephone (see "Initializing Your Telephone" below). 3. Connect your telephone to the phone line (see "Connecting Your Telephone to the Telephone Line" below). INSTALLING/REPLACING THE BATTERIES Your phone requires two AA alkaline batteries to protect the numbers you store in memory. These batteries normally last about one year. Your telephone automatically tests the batteries. If the BATT LOW indicator appears in the display, you need to replace the batteries. When you install batteries the first time, be sure you have not yet connected your phone to the phone lines. However, keep your phone connected to the phone lines while you replace old batteries. 1. Lift the handset. Press [LINE 1], [HOLD], then [LINE 2]. This prevents incoming calls. 2. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing the tab in the direction of the arrow. Remove the old batteries if necessary, and dispose of them properly. 3. Install two new AA alkaline batteries, observing proper polarity (+ and -) as marked in the battery compartment. CAUTION: If you install the batteries backwards, you might damage the phone. 4. Replace the battery compartment cover. 5. Press [RESET] (located on the back of your phone) with a pointed object such as a ball-point pen. The time resets to 12:00, but your phone does not lose any names or numbers you have stored in its memory. 6. Press [LINE 1] and return the handset to its cradle. INITIALIZING YOUR TELEPHONE After you install batteries the first time, follow these steps very carefully to properly initialize your phone. You must complete this procedure before you connect your phone to the phone line the first time. 1. Press the (RESET) button (located on the back of your phone) with a pointed object such as a ball-point pen. 2. Press and hold (MEMORY CLEAR) for about 6 seconds until your phone beeps and the display looks like this: [ ||||| ||||| ||||| ||||| ]. NOTE: This procedure clears the contents of your phone's directory and rests your phone. SELECTING A LOCATION Select a location for your phone that is: Near a phone jack Near an AC outlet Not in the way of normal activities in the area You can mount your phone on a wall, or place it on a shelf, desk, or table. INSTALLING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the supplied coil cord into the jack on the phone handset. Then, plug the other end into the jack on the side of the phone. Radio Shack stores sell longer coiled handset cords, which are especially useful if you wall-mount the phone. CONNECTING THE AC ADAPTER 1. Plug the AC adapter's small plug into the DC 9V jack on the back of your phone. 2. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. 3. Route the cord through the strain relief on the bottom of the phone. CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINES Plug the supplied cord into the jack on the bottom of your phone. Plug the other end into an RJ-14 two-line jack. If you have only one line, order the other line from the phone company. An RJ-14 jack looks like a single-line jack, but it is wired differently. If only Line 1 works after you install your phone, the second line is not wired to the jack. In this case, or if your phonelines do not have an RJ-14 jack: Update the wiring yourself. Radio Shack stores sell jacks and adapters to convert from older wiring types (four-prong, direct wiring). Connect your phone to two single line jacks by using a two-line coupler such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 279-401. Have the phone company update your phone system's wiring. NOTE: The phone company can charge you to install the jack. The phone company asks for the USOC number of the jack. This number is RJ-14C or RJ-14W for a wall jack. If you do not wire your phone lines correctly, or if you wire them using flat phone cable, you might hear crosstalk when both lines are in use. If you use only Line 1, set the LINE 2 switch on the back of your phone to OFF. This keeps the LINE 2 indicator from staying on. ADJUSTING THE LINE INDICATORS Your phone determines the line status (in use, on hold, or not in use) by sensing the phone line's voltage. Therefore, you might need to adjust to the line status for best operation. 1. Press LINE 1 and pick up the handset. The LINE 1 indicator should light steadily. 2. If the indicator flickers insert the supplied tool into the LN 1 ADJUST hole on the bottom of your phone, and turn it clockwise until the line indicator lights steadily. If clockwise adjustment does not make the indicator light steadily, try adjusting counter-clockwise. 3. Place Line 1 on hold. The LINE 1 indicator should blink. If the indicator does not blink, turn the LN 1 ADJUST slowly until the indicator begins to blink. To ensure a constant on-hold indication, turn the adjustment a fraction of a turn more than necessary in the same direction you were just turning. 4. Repeat Steps 1-3 for Line 2, adjusting LN 2 ADJUST. ATTACHING THE STAND We included a detachable stand with your phone.
