TAD-425 (430-0711) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9588 CHOOSING A LOCATION Select a location for your answering machine that is: Near an AC outlet Near a telephone jack Not in the way of normal activities CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINE The answering machine has an attached telephone cable with a modular plug. To connect the answering machine directly to a phone line, insert the modular plug into a standard modular phone jack. To connect the answering machine and a phone to the same jack, use a duplex adapter (available at your local Radio Shack store). If you do not have a modular telephone jack, you can: Update the wiring yourself. Your local Radio Shack store sells the jacks and adapters necessary to convert older wiring to modular wiring. Have the telephone company update the telephone wiring for you. NOTE: The telephone company can charge you for the installation of the necessary jacks. The telephone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. This number is number RJ11C. CONNECTING TO POWER Connect the barrel plug of the supplied DC 9-volt 400 mA Class II adapter to the answering machine's DC 9V jack. Then, insert the adapter's AC plug into a standard AC outlet (120 volts, 60 Hz). INSTALLING THE BACK-UP BATTERY We recommend that you install a 9-volt alkaline battery (Radio Shack at No. 23-553) to provide back-up power for a few hours in case of a power failure. This prevents the answering machine from losing memory information. NOTE: The answering machine cannot answer incoming calls or take messages using back-up power. The BATTERY LOW indicator lights to let you know when to install or replace the battery. 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pushing the tab in the direction of the arrow. 2. Snap the battery onto the connector in the compartment. The BATTERY LOW indicator goes off. 3. Replace the battery compartment cover. INSTALLING THE CASSETTES The answering machine includes an SFC-1 outgoing announcement cassette (30 seconds recording per side) and an SFC-60 incoming message cassette (30 minutes recording per side). You can buy extra leaderless cassettes at your local Radio Shack store. NOTES: Use only leaderless cassette tapes with your answering machine. Replace both cassettes once a year, or more often if the answering machine is frequently used. Do not use the SFC-1 cassette in the incoming cassette compartment. It can record only one message. The answering machine does not work properly with cassettes that have longer recording time than an SFC-90. 1. Take up any tape slack in each cassette by rotating the tape reel with a pencil. 2. Lift open the cassette compartment door. Install the outgoing announcement cassette in the left (OUTGOING) cassette compartment. then, install the incoming message cassette in the right (INCOMING) cassette compartment. Be sure the full reel of tape is on the left. 3. Close the cassette compartment door. (ALL-02/02/95)
