TURNING ON THE ANSWERING MACHINE

Turn on the answering machine by setting the MASTER POWER ON/OFF switch to
ON.

When you turn on the answering machine for the first time, it checks for
the incoming and outgoing announcement cassettes and 0 appears on the
display. If you do not install the cassettes before you turn on the
answering machine, it beeps eight times and E flashes on the display.
Load the cassettes and press STOP to clear the error.

RECORDING YOUR OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT

You can record the message you want callers to hear when the machine
answers. When you record the outgoing announcement, ask for specific
information, such as the caller's name and phone number so that you can
return the call.

EXAMPLE: "This is the Doe residence. I can't get to the phone right now,
but I will be happy to return your call if you leave your name
and telephone number after you hear the beep. Please speak
clearly and directly into the telephone. Thank you."

NOTE: For your own protection, do not tell callers that no one is home.
When you record a message, say something such as, "I can't get to
the phone right now," instead of, "I'm not home right now." Before
you record your outgoing announcement, we recommend that you write
       it down.

Follow these steps to record your outgoing announcement:

1. Press ANNOUNCE RECORD (located under the cassette lid). The ANSWER
and ANNOUNCE indicators flash and a beep sounds.

2. When you hear the beep, record your message by speaking about 8 inches
    from the microphone.

3. When you complete your message, press STOP. The answering machine
marks the end of your message and rewinds the tape.

CHECKING THE OUTGOING ANNOUNCEMENT

To check your outgoing announcement, press ANN ONLY so that the ANNOUNCE
indicator lights steadily. Then, press PLAY.

The answering machine plays the outgoing announcement, then rewinds the
outgoing announcement tape. Each time you record a new message, you
record over the previous message. You can re-record the message as many
times as you want.

SETTING THE SECURITY CODE

The answering machine's factory-set security code is 111. You can use
this code to operate the answering machine's remote functions; however, we
recommend that you set your own security code. Follow these steps to set
the code.

1. Press MODE SET (located on the back of the answering machine).

The answering machine flashes 1 and beeps three times, and then
displays the first digit of the current security code.

2. Press FAST-F or REWIND to change this digit of the security code.

3. Press MODE SET to store the digit. The answering machine flashes the
digit of the next position and beeps three times. Then, the next
digit of the current security code appears on the display.

4. Follow steps 2 and 3 to est the second and third digits of the
security code. After you press MODE SET to store the third digit,
each digit of the new security code flashes as the answering machine
    sounds three beeps.

NOTES: If you do not press a button within 30 seconds during the security
code setting procedure, the answering machine stores any entries
        up to that point.

If you press STOP before you finish setting the security code, the
answering machine stores the entries up to that point.

SETTING SWITCHES

After you record the outgoing announcement, set the following switches as
necessary.

Setting the ANSWER Switch

The following ANSWER switch settings determine when the answering machine
answers the phone.

IMM (Immediate Answer) - answers after about one ring.

DEL (Delayed Answer) - answers after about four rings.

TOL S (Toll Saver) - answers immediately if you received a message
since you last checked. Otherwise, it answers
                         after about four rings.

This setting can save you money during long-
distance remove operation. If you check for new
messages by long distance and the answering
machine does not answer on the first or second
ring, you can hang up to avoid the toll charge.

Setting the INCOMING MESSAGE Switch

Set the INCOMING MESSAGE switch to determine the maximum incoming message
length, 30 SEC or 3 MIN.

If the caller hangs up before the set time, the answering machine
automatically stops recording to conserve tape. See "Setting the CPC
MIN/MAX Switch."

Setting the CPC MIN/MAX Switch

Many telephone exchanges send out a special signal when a caller hangs up.
Your answering machine's CPC (Calling Party Control) circuit detects this
signal and the answering machine automatically resets to save tape. Set
the CPC MIN/MAX switch MAX at first. If the answering machine often
records a telephone company message, dial tones, and so on, set the switch
to MIN.

NOTE: CALL WAITING, a service offered by mot telephone companies, uses
signals identical to CPC signals. If you have this service, you
might want to set the CPC MIN/MAX switch to MAX. Otherwise, if the
answering machine receives a second call while the first caller
leaves a message, the answering machine might hang up during the
       first caller's message.

ANSWERING CALLS

Press ANSWER to set the answering machine to answer and record calls. The
ANSWER indicator flashes, a beep sounds, the outgoing announcement tape
rewinds, and the ANSWER indicator lights steadily.

The ANSWER indicator flashes rapidly while the answering machine records a
message, performs remote functions, or pays the outgoing announcement.

NOTE: If the incoming message tape is full when an incoming call comes
in, the caller hears four short beeps, the answering machine hangs
up and the number on the call counter increases by one.

Message Grouping

The answering machine divides your incoming messages into two groups --
old messages you have already heard and new messages.

NOTES: You cannot have more than two groups of messages at one time.

You cannot record over a message you have not played back. If you
try to do so, the answering machine winds the tape to the end of
the new messages before recording. This prevents accidentally
        recording over an unheard message.

PLAYING BACK INCOMING MESSAGES

After you receive at lease one message, the ANSWER indicator lights
steadily and the number of messages appears on the call counter display.

To listen to new messages, press PLAY.

The incoming message tape rewind to the beginning the new message(s) and
then plays to the end of the message(s), or until you press STOP. Adjust
VOLUME for the desired volume. At the end of the messages, the answering
machine stops and sounds three beeps.

To replay the messages, press REWIND. Then, press PLAY again.

To locate a specific section of tape, press PLAY. Then, press and hold
down REWIND or FAST-F. The answering machine audibly rewinds or fast
forwards the tape. Release REWIND or FAST-F to hear the messages.

NOTES: Some callers might choose not to leave a message or hang up before
using the maximum time. If this happens and your telephone
substation does not send out CPC signals, the answering machine
records dial tones, beeping, or a recorded voice until the VOX
circuit stops recording. See "Setting the CPC MIN/MAX Switch."

If you receive more than 19 messages, 19 flashes on the call
        counter display.

To skip unwanted material such as dial tones, press and hold down FAST-F
or REWIND during playback. The answering machine audibly fast-forwards or
rewinds the tape. Release FAST-F or REWIND to resume normal playback.
Press STOP to stop the tape at any time.

After you listen to your new messages and press ANSWER to answer and
record more calls, you move all messages to the old message group.

To listen to old messages after you received new messages, press REWIND.
When the tape stops, press REWIND again. The answering machine rewinds to
the beginning the tape, stops, and beeps three times. Press PLAY to play
back the old messages.

To save a message for later reference, follow these steps:

1. Press REWIND or FAST-F to locate the message.

2. let the message play to the end and press STOP.

3. Press ANSWER to set the answering machine to answer calls.

When you press PLAY, the answering machine plays back only the new
messages because the saved message is considered an old message.

USING ANNOUNCEMENT ONLY

You can set your answering machine so that is plays the outgoing
announcement but does not record a message. This is useful for providing
information about an event.

If necessary, change the outgoing announcement, and make it clear that the
caller cannot leave a message.

Press ANN ONLY.

When you receive a call, the caller hears the outgoing announcement, but
cannot leave a message.

NOTE: You must still install the incoming message tape even though it is
       not used for announcement only.

ERASING THE INCOMING MESSAGE TAPE

Your answering machine can record new messages over old ones. However, to
prevent others from listening to your messages, you might want to erase
the incoming message tape. Be sure you have listened to all your messages
before you erase the tape.

To erase the tape, press and hold down ERASE REWIND. Then, press REWIND.
The answering machine rewinds the tape and erases the messages, and stops
at the beginning of the tape. Press ANSWER to set the answering machine
to answer incoming calls.

NOTE: You can also erase the outgoing announcement. Place the outgoing
announcement cassette into the right (INCOMING) cassette
compartment and follow the same procedure.

After you erase the outgoing announcement, reload both cassettes in the
proper compartments, re-record a new outgoing announcement, and press
ANSWER to set the answering machine to answer incoming calls.
