Optimus Model 59 4 Head Hi-Fi VCR (160-0629) Operation Faxback Doc. # 17957 VIEWING TV Using the TV's Tuner To view a broadcast using the TV's tuner, turn off the VCR, or press TV/VCR on the VCR or remote control until VCR disappears from the VCR's display. NOTE: If you are using a TV/monitor connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, be sure to set it to the TV mode. The antenna or cable signals pass through the VCR unaffected, as if the antenna or cable were connected directly to the TV. You can use the TV as you normally would. Using the VCR's Tuner 1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (3 or 4). NOTE: If you are using a TV/monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set it to the video mode (see "If Your TV Has Audio/Video (A/V) input Jacks" on Faxback Doc. # 31877). 2. Press TV/VCR on the VCR or remote control until VCR appears on the VCR's display. SELECTING CHANNELS Your VCR can receive up to 68 VHF and UHF channels, and up to 123 cable channels. The VCR displays the channels as 1-123. NOTES: Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable companies usually number them as they appear on the display. Since cable companies sometimes designate cable channels with letters or letter-number combinations, a channel number you see on the VCR's display might differ from the channel number displayed on your cable box. You might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel designations for your cable system. For more information, contact your local cable company. To manually select a channel, press CH (+) or (-). The tuner automatically advances to the next channel stored in the tuner's memory. NOTE: If you press CH (+) when the tuner is at the highest programmed channel or CH (-) when the tuner is at the lowest programmed channel, the VCR enters the audio/video mode and AV1 or AV2 appears on the TV (see "Selecting the Signal to Record" on Faxback Doc. # 31884). Continue to press CH (+) or (-) until the highest or lowest programmed channel appears. To directly select a channel, press the number buttons on the remote control for the desired channel. NOTES: Precede a single-digit number with a 0 - for example, 01, 02, etc. To enter a three-digit number, press 100. Then enter the second and third digits in the channel number. VIEWING A VIDEO TAPE Loading a Video Tape 1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (3 or 4). NOTE: If you are using a TV/ monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set it to the video mode. 2. Hold the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine facing out from the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the VCR's compartment and gently push the center of its spine until the VCR draws it in. The VCR automatically turns on, and the clock display changes to the tape counter if you removed the erase-protection tab from the tape. If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback automatically begins (see "Erase Protection" on Faxback Doc. # 31884). CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal mechanisms. PLAYING A VIDEO TAPE 1. Load a video tape. 2. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY. The VCR plays the tape. NOTE: During playback, the VCR automatically adjusts the tracking, but you can manually adjust it if necessary (see "Adjusting the Tracking Manually" on Faxback Doc. # 31885). 3. (Model 59 only) You can choose the type of audio you want the Model 59 to play back. To set the audio output option, press 4 on the remote control to select SET UP from the main menu display, then press 7 on the remote control to select AUDIO OUTPUT. AUDIO OUTPUT is highlighted, and the currently selected audio output option ([L]-[R] [Stereo], [L], [R], or LINEAR) flashes. Then, repeatedly press CH (+) or (-) to select an audio output option. The following table shows the audio channels you hear when you receive a stereo broadcast or play back a stereo video tape through a stereo system or stereo TV connected to the VCR. DISPLAY VHF OUTPUT AUDIO OUT _____________________________________________________________________ L-R L-R combined (mono) Left channel from L OUT, (Stereo) right from R OUT _____________________________________________________________________ L Left channel only Left channel from L and R _____________________________________________________________________ R Right channel only Right channel from L and R _____________________________________________________________________ LINEAR Regular audio track Regular audio track from L and R _____________________________________________________________________ NOTES: If you play a tape recorded on a standard VCR, the Model 59 plays the linear audio track, regardless of the audio output setting. If the audio program was recorded on two linear channels on a stereo but not Hi-Fi VCR, the stereo signal becomes mono and the SAP signal becomes the main signal. 4. To stop playback before the end of the tape, press STOP/EJECT on the VCR or STOP on the remote control. 5. To eject the tape, press STOP/EJECT again on the VCR or press EJECT on the remote control. NOTES: If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP/EJECT or EJECT, the VCR automatically stops the tape, completely rewinds and ejects it, then turns itself off. When the VCR is off, you can press STOP/EJECT on the VCR or EJECT on the remote control to eject a tape. The VCR ejects the tape then turns itself off. This VCR will record at both the SP and EP speeds using VCR+. After selecting the mode, use the remote control to change to the desired speed. (IR/ir-06/19/96)
