TC-193 13" Cable-Compatible Color Television (160-0229) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18252 For the best reception in any area, use a high-quality outdoor antenna. Radio Shack offers a wide selection of TV antennas. Ask a Radio Shack salesperson what size and type is best for your area. However, if you do not yet have an outdoor antenna, you can use the supplied indoor antennas. They provide adequate reception in many areas. The following items are included with the TV. Dipole (rabbit-ear) antenna (used for VHF reception-Channels 2-13) UHF bow-tie antenna (used for Channels 14-83) 300-to-75 Ohm antenna adapter CONNECTING THE INDOOR ANTENNAS To install the VHF dipole and UHF bow-tie antenna: 1. Insert the telescoping antenna base into the socket on top of the TV. 2. Connect the dipole antenna's wire to the VHF terminals on the supplied antenna adapter. 3. Snap the clip-on UHF bow-tie antenna to one of the VHF dipole's elements. 4. Connect the twin-lead wire from the UHF antenna to the UHF terminals on the antenna adapter. 5. Connect the antenna adapter to the antenna terminal on the back of the TV. 6. Extend the VHF elements fully and adjust both elements for the best reception. CONNECTING THE OUTDOOR ANTENNAS The TV has a single 75-Ohm terminal for VHF/UHF combined signals. If you have a UHF/VHF combined antenna with a 75-Ohm lead-in cable, connect the lead-in cable directly to the antenna terminal on the back of the TV. If your antenna system differs, use one of the following options: Separate antennas for VHF and UHF a. If both down leads are the 300-Ohm type, use the supplied antenna adapter. b. If the VHF down lead is the 75-Ohm type (UHF should be 300-Ohm), use a signal combiner like those sold at your local Radio Shack store. Combined antenna with a 300-Ohm down lead Use a 300-to-75-Ohm adapter CONNECTING CATV SYSTEMS The TV can tune almost all available cable channels without a converter box. You can receive a total of 52 cable channels. (Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and Cable TV). Your local cable company can tell you about the services that are available. USING THE CABLE-COMPATIBLE TUNER (52 OR FEWER CHANNELS) If you do not receive scrambled channels: 1. Connect the cable wire directly to ANT 75-Ohm, which you can find on the back lower right-hand corner of the TV. 2. Set NORMAL/CATV to CATV. 3. Use the TV's tuner to select the desired channel. CAUTION: Some states have laws restricting direct connections to cable wires (connections that don't go through the cable box). Check the laws in your area before making any connections. USING THE CABLE BOX If you receive scrambled channels or if your cable company uses channels outside the TV's tuning range: 1. Connect a coaxial cable from the cable box to ANT 75-Ohm. 2. Set the TV to Channel 3 or 4. 3. Use the cable box to select the desired channel. To watch standard cable channels or premium pay cable channels, you will need an A/B switch (available at your local Radio Shack store). To watch standard cable channels using the cable-compatible tuner in the TV, set the A/B switch to A. To watch premium pay cable channels (or channels outside the TV's tuning range) set the A/B switch to B, tune the TV to channel 3 or 4, and then use the cable company's tuner to select the desired channel. Do not change the position of NORMAL/CATV as you switch between direct CATV signals and cable-box output on channel 3 or 4. Changing the position clears the programmed tuner's memory. Channels 2 through 13 use the same frequency on both broadcast and CATV. NOTE TO THE CATV SYSTEM INSTALLER: Radio Shack provides this reminder to call attention to Article 820-22 of the National Electrical Code. This article provides guidelines for proper grounding. It specifically states that the cable ground be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to cable entry as practical. CONNECTING A VCR OR OTHER AUDIO/VIDEO SOURCE You can follow the general instructions below to connect a VCR or other audio/video source to the TV. 1. Disconnect the antenna or cable wires from the ANT 75-Ohm terminal on the TV. 2. Connect the antenna or cable wires to the VHF/UHF input terminals on the VCR. See the VCR's owner's manual for more instructions. Normally, the VCR-to-TV connection comes supplied with the VCR. Use it to connect the VCR's VHF/UHF output terminal(s) to your TV's ANT 75 Ohm terminal. 3. To view the VCR's output signals (VHF/UHF signals and tape signals), select Channel 3 or 4 on the TV. If the VCR has separate terminals for VHF and UHF, use a signal combiner (available at all Radio Shack stores) between the cables and the TV's ANT 75-Ohm terminal. You can also connect other audio/video sources, such as another TV or a video disc player, to your TV. Connect the audio/video output jacks from the auxiliary audio/video source to the audio/video input jacks on the TV. REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION AND FEATURES The remote control's [POWER], VOLUME [DOWN]/[UP], Channel [DOWN]/[UP] (located on both sides of [0]), [TV/VCR], [AUTO]/[SELECT] and [LEFT/RIGHT ADJUST] picture controls are identical in function to the corresponding buttons on the TV's front panel. The remaining remote control buttons include [FLASH BACK], [MUTE], [TIME], [TIMER], [DISPLAY], [HOUR], and [MINUTE]. These buttons control special remote-only functions. See "Special Features.", (see Page 17 of original owner's manual). CHANNEL NUMBER BUTTONS Press these buttons to directly select any broadcast or cable channel in the current tuner band (VHF/UHF or cable). To select a one-digit channel number, enter [0] first, then the single-digit channel number (02, 03, 04, and so on). [DISPLAY] BUTTON Press to display the current channel and time. If you have set the timer, the remaining time appears on the screen. INSTALLING THE BATTERIES 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by sliding the compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Install two AA batteries using the polarity (+ and -) marked in the battery compartment as a guide. We recommend Radio Shack's alkaline batteries (Cat. No. 23-552). 3. Replace the compartment cover. If the remote control operation becomes erratic or does not work at all, replace both batteries. To use the remote control, point the control toward the TV and press the desired button. (CD 11/7/95)
