70-Channel Remote Control Cable Converter (150-1287) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 18385 INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERY 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by sliding it in the direction of the arrow. 2. Snap the battery clip onto the terminals of a 9-volt battery (not included) such as Radio Shack's Cat. No. 23-553. 3. Place the battery in the compartment, and then replace the compartment cover. SETTING THE CH3-CH4 SWITCH Set your TV's tuner to Channel 3 or 4 (whichever channel is not being used for broadcasts in your area). Then, set the convert's CH3-CH4 switch to CH3 or CH4 to match the channel you selected on your TV's tuner. USING THE SWITCHED AC OUTLET The converter's SWITCHED AC outlet provides a source of 120V, 60Hz power (up to 500 Watts) for your TV or another electronic device. The [POWER] button on the converter or remote control turns this outlet on and off. Note: If you plug your TV into the SWITCHED AC outlet, you can turn the TV on and off with the converter. However, if your TV has an instant-on feature, this feature will be overriden by the converter's SWITCHED AC outlet. Also, some digital TV tuners automatically reset to a channel other than 3 or 4 when you turn the power off at the outlet. In these cases, you might prefer to leave your TV plugged into a standard AC outlet and turn it on and off manually. CONNECTING TO THE CABLE IN TERMINAL Connect the coaxial cable from you cable company to the CABLE IN terminal located on the back of your converter. CONNECTING TO THE TV SET TERMINAL Connect the 75-Ohm terminal on your TV to the TV SET terminal on the back of the converter. Use the supplied 75-Ohm coaxial cable with F-type connectors. If your TV has only 300-Ohm terminals, use the supplied 75-to-300-Ohm transformer. CONNECTING THE CONVERTER The connection of your converter might vary depending on the complexity of your video system. Locate the connection example that is most similar to your system. Your system might use a combination of two or more of our examples. If you have questions, take a diagram of your system to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. NOTE: Check local regulations before connecting any device to your cable system. Single-Wire Cable System without "Scrambled" Channels, see diagram A on Faxback Doc. #18152, "Connections." Single-Wire Cable System with "Scrambled" Channels With the connections shown on Figure B on Faxback Doc. # 18152, "Connections", use a high-isolation A/B switch (available at your local Radio Shack store) to select between the output from the converter and the output from the CATV box. You should only use the CATV box for "scrambled" premium channels. You will still have remote control of regular cable channels when the A/B switch is set to the converter. Set the channel switch on the CATV box to Channel 3 or 4 and leave its tuning dial set to the scrambled channel. Two-Cable System Some cable systems offer more than 70 channels and include two incoming wires. To use your converter with such a system, install an A/B switch (not included) to connect the cable company wires to the converter, see figure C on Faxback Doc. #18152, "Connections." Use the A/B switch to select the group of channels you want to watch. You can select individual channels with the CHANNEL buttons on the cable converter or remote control. NOTE: Your cable converter only displays Channels 02 through 71. If you try to directly enter a number above 71, the cable converter returns to the last valid channel selected. You can use the labels on the converter and remote control to record differences in channel numbering. See "Variations in Channel Numbering." Two-Cable System with "Scrambled" Premium Channels The drawing on Figure D, Faxback Doc. #18152,"Connections," shows the necessary connections when you use your converter with premium channels. This connection requires a second A/B switch. If you are receiving your premium channel(s) from only one of the cable company wires, you should use a splitter for only the wire that carries the premium channel(s) to the CATV box. A/B switch #1 selects the group of channels the converter receives. A/B switch #2 selects between the output of the CATV box and the output of the converter. Leave A/B switch #2 set to the converter except when you view premium channels. CONNECTING A VCR You can use a VCR with your cable converter and TV set. Recording and Viewing Non-Premium Cable The connections shown on Figure E on Faxback Doc. #18152, "Connections," allow you to record a non-premium channel while you view it. If your VCR has a cable-compatible tuner, you can connect the converter between the VCR and the TV. Set your TV's TV/VCR switch to TV so that you can watch one non-premium cable channel while you record another. Recording and Viewing a Premium Cable Channel The connections shown in Figure F on Faxback Doc. #18152, "Connections," let you record a premium cable channel while you view it. You can also record any non-premium cable channel while you view any other non-premium cable channel. With the A/B switch set to the converter, you have remote control of all cable channels, except premium cable channels. When you want to view premium channels, set the A/B switch to the CATV box. Then, follow the instructions in the VCR's owner's manual to set the channel switches on the VCR and CATV box. (CS 11/29/95)
