Deluxe DSS System (160-2530) Installation Tips Faxback Doc. # 19693 These installation tips may help you as your install the DSS dish. Using a Bubble Level or Plumb Line to Align the Mounting Foot This section describes using a bubble level or a plumb line. Vertically aligning the mounting foot is used as an example in the steps below. 1. Hold the mounting foot stationary on the vertical surface. 2. Gently move the mounting foot until the foot is perfectly aligned with the bubble level or the plumb line. If you use the bubble level, hold the level vertically against the mounting surface. Then, align the side of the mounting foot with the bubble level. If you use a plumb line, align the scribe marks inside the mounting foot with the plumb line. LOCATING A WALL STUD OR RAFTER To locate a wall stud, rafter, or cross-brace, follow these steps: 1. Tap the wall or roof surface lightly with a small hammer wrapped in a clean cloth. 2. If you hear a hollow thud, move the hammer an inch to the left or right and tap again. 3. Repeat step 2 until you hear a sharp thump. You have located a stud or rafter. 4. Tap 1 inch to the left and right and listen for the same sharp thump to locate the center of the stud or rafter. You can drill 1/8" test holes where you think the edges of the stud or rafter are located. Then, you can drill the holes for the mounting foot between the two small holes. Remember to seal the test holes with silicone sealant. NOTES: If you drill into a roof, make sure you fill the holes with silicone sealant before you insert the lag screw to secure the mounting foot on a roof. Then, apply additional sealant to the surface of the roof around the holes you sealed and make the edges of the sealant slightly raised. HINTS: Use a stud finder if you have one. Electrical outlets are usually attached to the left or right side of a wall stud. The next wall stud is normally 16 inches to the left or right of the electrical outlet. "However, do not drill near an electrical outlet." DRILLING INTO CINDER BLOCK When you attach the dish's mounting foot to cinder block, use the appropriate togglers and drill into the hollow core of the cinder block. In a two-core or three-core cinder block, a hollow core is 4 inches to the left or right of the vertical mortar joint. Using a 1/2" masonry drill bit, drill into the hollow area of the cinder block. Then, attach the mounting foot using togglers. Instructions for using togglers begin below. USING TOGGLERS Use 1/4" togglers and 1/4-20 x 3" machine screws to secure a mounting to the hollow area of a wall or to cinder block. CAUTION: Before you drill into any wall, make sure that you locate and avoid hidden wiring, ducts and plumbing pipes. Do not drill near electrical outlets. To use the togglers, follow these steps: 1. Locate a hollow space in the wall where you want to mount the dish. If you are drilling into a hollow wall, drill four holes. If you are drilling into a cinder block wall, drill two holes. 2. Use the mounting foot as a template and mark where you want to drill the holes over the hollow space in the wall. Make sure the whole mounting foot fits within the space over the hollow space. 3. Drill 1/2" holes in the locations you marked. 4. Holding the ring end of the toggler, insert the pointed end of the plastic holder for the toggle bolt into the hole until the end of the plastic holder is in the hollow space. 5. Rotate the toggler and gently pull the plastic ring to ensure the toggler position is flush with the inside surface of the wall. 6. When you are sure the toggler is flush with the inside surface, pull the plastic ring and push the plastic push-cap toward the wall. 7. When the push-cap is in the hole you drilled, gently snap off the plastic straps that are attached to the plastic ring. 8. Attach the mounting foot using the 1/4-20 x 3" machine screws. (CS 2/1/96)
