Model 104 (160-0541) Playing a Video Tape Faxback Doc. # 3937 NORMAL PLAYBACK Turn on the system, then follow these steps to pay a prerecorded tape. 1. Position the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label facing out from the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the cassette compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine until the VCR complete pulls in the cassette. The tape indicator lights. If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback automatically begins. CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. This might damage the VCR's internal mechanism. 2. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY. 3. Press STOP/EJECT (or STOP on the remote control) to stop playback before the end of the tape. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP, the VCR automatically stops and completely rewinds it. Then press STP/EJECT to eject the cassette. NOTES: You can press STOP/EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The VCR's power temporarily turn on to eject the cassette. STOP/EJECT is located only on the VCR's control panel. Fast-Forward/Rewind While the VCR is stopped, press FAST-F or REWIND to quickly fast-forward or rewind the tape. The picture disappears from the TV screen and the sound mutes. If the tape reaches the end during fast-forward or rewind, it automatically stops. NOTE: You can use the counter to locate a specific section of tape (see "Counter with Memory"). Visual Search During normal playback, press FAST-F or REWIND to view the recording at a faster speed so you can find a specific section of the tape. At the desired point on the tape, press PLAY, FAST-F or REWIND to resume normal playback. For tapes recorded at the SLP speed, the search speed is 27 times faster than the normal playback speed; for tapes recorded at the LP and SP speed, the search is 9 times faster. NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display for visual search. During visual search, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. The search picture is best with tapes recorded at the SLP speed. Automatic Tracking Control Tracking is the precise alignment of the playback head with a tape's recorded track. When a tape is recorded on one VCR and played on another, the recorded track might be slightly offset. When a cassette is inserted and the VCR starts playback, the automatic tracking control automatically aligns the playback head to the recorded track. To adjust the picture manually, press and hold down TRACKING /\ or \/ on the remote control during playback. On-Screen Displays Tape Motion Display - The tape motion display shows you the direction the tape is moving during tape playback or recording. Tape Remain Display - The tape remain display shows you the amount of time the tape has left to play based on the tape speed (SP, LP, or SLP). To use the Tape Remain Display function correctly, you should set the tape type first. Follow these steps to set the tape type and display the tape remain time. 1. Press PROG on the remote control. The MAIN MENU appears on the TV screen. 2. Press 4 to select the VCR FUNCTION SET UP MENU. The set-up menu appears on the TV screen. 3. Repeatedly press 1 to select the tape type. T-180: For T-180 tape T-160: For T-160 tape T-120: For T-120 tape 4. Press PROG twice to exit the VCR FUNCTION SET UP MENU and the MAIN MENU. 5. Press PLAY or REC. The VCR starts to calculate the tape's remaining time (within one minute). 6. Press DISPLAY to see the remaining time. Press DISPLAY two more times to display the normal screen. Function Display - This display briefly appears on the TV screen when you change a main VCR function or when you change the channel using the remote control's or VCR's CHANNEL /\ or \/ buttons. Counter With Memory This lets you return to a specific point on a tape without having to search through the entire tape. Follow these steps to use the tape counter with memory. 1. Press DISPLAY twice. The tape counter appears on the VCR's display. NOTE: Your VCR's tape counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape count. 2. Press CLEAR on the remote control to reset the tape counter to 0:00:00M. NOTE: CLEAR resets the tape counter to 0:00:00M and stores that tape counter location in memory. 3. When you reach a point in the tape that you want to return to later, press CLEAR. NOTE: All previous CLEAR memory storage locations are lost. 4. After you play or record a program, press REWIND. The tape rewinds to the 0:00:00M location. Press REWIND again to rewind to the beginning to the beginning of the tape. 5. Press DISPLAY to return to the normal screen. NOTE: If you do not want to use this function, press PROG and 4 to select the VCR FUNCTION SET UP MENU then press 2 to select COUNTER MEMORY (OFF). Automatic Repeat Play You can program the VCR to play the tape repeatedly after rewinding. Press PROG then 4 to select the VCR FUNCTION SET UP MENU then press 2 to select the COUNTER MEMORY (OFF). When the tape finishes playback, the VCR automatically stops and rewinds then starts playback again repeatedly. NOTE: If you use the index search system during playback, you cannot use repeat play. Freeze-Frame Freeze-frame lets you stop a tape and view a single frame. NOTES: During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. However, the picture is best with recordings made at the SLP speed. Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PLAY or PAUSE/STILL to return to normal playback. If you leave the VCR in freeze-frame mode longer than 5 minutes, the VCR automatically stops. (ALL-01/13/95)
