Model 104 (160-0541) Recording Faxback Doc. # 3947 There are four ways to record using your VCR: Immediate recording One-Touch recording Automatic timer recording Dubbing (copying) NOTES: Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level. When you start a recording, your VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal. You can quickly locate a specific recording on the tape by using index search or index scan. If the cassette's erase-protection tab has not been removed, place a piece of plastic tape over the tab hole to allow recording. SELECTING A VIDEO CASSETTE TAPE The video cassette tape's quality greatly affects the record/playback quality and your VCR's life. High-grade oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video heads. Although T-180 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use T-120 or shorter length tape. IMMEDIATE RECORDING You can record a program while you watch it or record one program while you watch another. NOTE: If you want to record from another VCR, a laser disc player, or other source with A/V outputs, see "Dubbing." Recording a Program While You Watch It Turn on the system, then follow these steps to record the same program you watch. 1. Press INPUT on the remote control to select the tuner mode. 2. Select the channel you want to record. 3. Insert a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the VCR. NOTE: If the cassette's erase-protection tab has been removed, place a piece of plastic tape over the tab hole to allow recording on the tape. 4. Press SP/LP/SLP on the remote control until the desired recording speed (SP, LP, or SLP) is displayed. 5. Press RECORD on the VCR or on the remote control. REC appears on the VCR's display and the TV's screen. NOTE: Press PAUSE/STILL during recording to temporarily pause the recording (during commercials, for example). To resume recording, press PAUSE/STILL again or RECORD. (See "Record Pause.") 6. Press STOP to stop recording. Recording One Program While You Watch Another Turn on the system, then follow these steps to record one program while you watch another. 1. Follow Steps 1-5 in the previous section to start recording. 2. Press TV/VCR until VCR disappears from the VCR's display. 3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch. NOTE: If you use a TV monitor, set it to the TV mode. 4. Press STOP to stop recording. ONE-TOUCH RECORDING One-Touch Recording (OTR) lets you start a recording by pressing a single button. Recording starts immediately and stops automatically after the length of time you select (30 minutes to 4 hours). Turn on the system, then follow these steps to start one-touch recording. 1. Insert a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into the VCR. NOTES: If the VCR is turned off, it automatically turns on. If the cassette's erase-protection tab has been removed, place a piece of plastic tape over the tab hole to allow recording on the tape. 2. Select the channel you want to record. 3. Press SP/LP/SLP until the desired recording speed is displayed. 4. Press RECORD twice to begin recording. TIMER and 0:30 appear on the display. Then repeatedly press RECORD until the VCR displays the desired recording length. NOTE: The VCR displays recording length in 30-minute increments, up to 4 hours. OTR Hints To ensure that you record all of the desired program, make the recording length a little longer than the program material. OTR cannot function if you have not inserted a cassette, if the erase- protection tab is removed, or if automatic timer recording is in progress. During OTR recording, the display shows the remaining recording time unless you press DISPLAY to change the display. To cancel OTR, press POWER on the VCR. Or, repeatedly press RECORD until the display shows the present time, then press STOP. You can change the OTR end time by pressing RECORD until the desired time appears. You can use the TV/VCR button during OTR. You can check automatic timer program settings during OTR (see "Automatic Timer Recording"). If Automatic Timer Recording is set to start during OTR, OTR takes priority. The VCR's power turns off at the end of OTR. AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING Automatic Timer Recording (ATR) lets you set the VCR to start and end a recording while you are away. Your VCR has eight program timers that let you record on a specific day within a 1-year period (ONE TIME), the same day every week (WEEKLY), or once a day at the same time Monday through Friday (DAILY). You can use each program timer to record on different channels and at different speeds. Setting the Program Timer to Record You must use the number buttons on the remote control to set the program timer. Be sure you correctly set the clock before you use ATR. Turn on the system, then follow these steps to set the program timer. 1. Insert a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into the VCR. NOTE: If the cassette's erase-protection tab has been removed, place a piece of plastic tape over the tab hole to allow recording on the tape. 2. Press PROG on the remote control. The MAIN MENU appears on the TV screen. 3. Press 1 to select TIMER PROGRAM. Program numbers 1-4 appear. 4. Enter a number (1-8) to select the desired program number. NOTE: If you press a numbers (5-8) appear. 5. Select the channel number. NOTE: Precede single-digit entries with 0 (02, 03, and so on). 6. Set the start time as 4 digits (0, 7, 0, and 0 to set 07:00, for example). 7. Press 1 to select AM or 2 to select PM. 8. Set the end time. 9. Set the date. If you wish to select daily/weekly programming, press 00, then the daily/weekly programming menu appears. Enter the number for the desired program. (For example, select 4 if you want to record every Wednesday). 10. Press SP/LP/SLP repeatedly to select the tape speed. If the tape length is not long enough for timer recording in the SP mode, set the recording speed to AUTO. Recording starts in the SP mode. If the tape length is not long enough, the tape speed automatically changes from the SP mode to SLP mode. 11. Check all the set information: If it is correct, press PROG. If some information is not correct, press SHIFT as needed and correct the information. Then press PROG. 12. Press POWER to turn off the VCR. "REMEMBER TO CHECK TAPE AND TURN VCR POWER OFF FOR TIMER RECORDING" appears on the TV screen. TIMER appears on the VCR's display to show the VCR is in the timer standby mode. When a timer recording begins, REC appears. Automatic Timer Recording Hints To stop the VCR during ATR, press POWER on the VCR. You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times, but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is off at the set start time. If a power failure occurs or the VCR is unplugged for about an hour, the VCR loses the clock setting and all timer settings. If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette, TIMER flashes. If the tape reaches the end during timer recording, the VCR's power turns off. Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording 1. Turn on and set the TV to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch. 2. Press TV/VCR so VCR appears on the display. NOTE: If you have a TV monitor, set it to the video mode. Checking the Program Timers Turn on the system, then follow these steps to check program timers. 1. Set the TV to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch. 2. Press PROG. The program menu appears on the TV screen. 3. Press 1 to select the timer program. 4. Enter a number (5-8) to review the next program timer information. 5. Press PROG to end the program timer check. The program menu reappears. 6. Press PROG again to exit the PROGRAM mode. Clearing a Program Timer 1. Follow Steps 1-4 under "Checking the Program Timers" to review the program timers. 2. Enter a number (1-8) to display the program timer you want to clear. 3. Press CLEAR to clear the displayed timer. Then enter a number (1-8) as needed, to review another program timer. 4. Press PROG after you clear the desired timers. "REMEMBER TO CHECK TAPE AND TURN VCR POWER OFF FOR TIMER RECORDING" appears on the TV screen. DUBBING The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing. When you dub, always use video-quality shielded cables with phono connectors on all VIDEO IN/OUT connections. Do not use standard audio patch cords. NOTE: You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR. Turn on the system, then follow these steps to dub a video cassette tape. Be sure you connect a playback VCR to the Model 104. 1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR. 2. Load a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the Model 104's cassette compartment. This is the recording VCR. 3. Press INPUT on the remote control so L appears on the VCR's display and VIDEO appears on the TV screen. NOTE: For the best results during dubbing, hold the Model 104's remote control close to the VCR's receiver window when you press INPUT and SP/LP/SLP. Otherwise, the remote control might affect the playback VCR's operation. 4. Press PROG then 4 to select the VCR FUNCTION SET UP MENU. Then press 4 to select EDIT (ON). This maintains picture quality during dubbing. 5. Repeatedly press SP/LP/SLP on the remote control to display the desired recording speed. 6. Press RECORD on the remote control. 7. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR. Monitoring Dubbing 1. Turn on and set the TV to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch. 2. Press TV/VCR so VCR appears on the display. NOTE: If you have a TV monitor, set it to the video mode. Record Pause Use PAUSE/STILL during recording to keep from recording unwanted material (such as commercials). Using PAUSE/STILL makes a smooth, almost unnoticeable edit. Press PAUSE/STILL at the beginning of the unwanted material. the tape temporarily stops. Press PAUSE/STILL again to resume recording. NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the pause mode for longer than 5 minutes during recording, the VCR automatically stops recording. If you press PAUSE/STILL to temporarily stop the recording, an index signal is not applied to the recording. (ALL-01/13/95)
