The following information describes some of the Model 102's special on-
screen, display, and search functions.

BLUE SCREEN DISPLAY

The blue-screen display appears when you select the menu, play unrecorded
portions of a tape, or when you tune to a weak TV station.  The blue
screen also appears if you set the VCR to the AV mode when the AUDIO/VIDEO
IN jacks are not receiving any input signals.

You can switch the blue screen on or off.  On the SET UP menu, select 3: 
BLUE SCREEN and use CHANNEL \/ or /\ to set the blue screen function on or
off.  Select 5:  END to return to the normal screen.

The blue-screen does not function when:

    The still, video search, slow motion, or double speed playback modes
    are in progress.

    You play back a tape with excessive noise.

Also, the blue screen might fail to function properly if:

    A broadcast signal is too strong or too weak.

    You use an indoor antenna.

NOTE:  The VCR does not record the blue screen.

ON-SCREEN DISPLAY

Press ON SCREEN to display your VCR's current operation mode on the TV.  
Each time you press ON SCREEN, the display changes in this order:

    Tape speed/channel/counter

    Tape speed/channel/counter/time/date

    Counter only

    No display

NOTE:  The tape speed/channel/counter display only stays on the screen for
       a few seconds, but the other displays remain on until you turn
       them off.

FUNCTION INDICATORS

When you set ON SCREEN so your VCR's current operation mode displays on
the TV and press a function button (such as STOP), the selected function
indicator appears on the TV screen for about 3 seconds.

When you change the channel, the new channel number appears on the TV
screen for about 3 seconds.

NOTE:  If you play back a poor quality or damaged tape, the function
       indicator or channel number might not appear on the VCR's display.

FAST-RESPONSE SYSTEM

When you load a video cassette with its erase protection tab intact, the
VCR positions the tape next to the record/playback head for about 5
minutes.  Within this period, you can immediately start playback,
recording, or any other tape motion the moment you press the appropriate
button.  This is useful any time you need a precise start for playback or
recording.

When you stop the tape during playback, recording, rewind, or fast
forward, the tape remains positioned next to the record/playback head for
about 5 minutes.  After 5 minutes, the fast-response system releases to
protect the tape.

AUTOMATIC PLAYBACK REWIND, AND EJECT

When you load a cassette with the erase-protection removed, playback
begins automatically.  Whether or not the erase-protection tab is removed,
when the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or fast
forward, the VCR automatically rewinds to the beginning of the tape,
ejects the cassette, and turns off.

USING THE SHUTTLE DIAL AND BUTTONS

Use the shuttle dial and buttons to change the tape's direction and vary
the playback speed.

NOTE:  The shuttle ring does not rotate 360 degrees.  Do not force it past
       the stops.

Quick-Motion

During playback, press PLAY/DOUBLE-SPEED on the shuttle dial to double the
playback speed.

During quick-motion, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture quality is
lower than during normal playback.  The picture quality is best with
recordings made at the SP speed.

Press PLAY/DOUBLE SPEED again to return to the normal playback speed.

NOTE:  If you leave the tape in quick-motion, it plays until it reaches
       the end of the tape.  Then it automatically stops, rewinds, ejects
       and the VCR turns off.

Freeze-Frame

Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape to view a single frame.

Press PAUSE/STILL on the shuttle dial during playback to freeze the
picture.  Press PLAY/DOUBLE SPEED to return to normal playback.

During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than during normal
playback.  The picture quality is best with recordings made at the SP
speed.

NOTES:  If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, the
        VCR automatically switches back to playback mode.

        If a horizontal bar appears during freeze-frame, adjust the
        tracking in the slow-motion mode (see "Manual Tracking Control"
        and "Variable Speed Slow Motion").

        To reduce or eliminate jitter in the freeze-frame picture, press
        and hold CHANNEL \/ or /\ until the picture is clear.

Frame Advance

During the freeze-frame mode, you can advance the picture one frame at a
time by repeatedly press PAUSE/STILL.  This feature works best with video
cassettes recorded at the SP speed.

Fast-Forward/Rewind and Visual Search

To advance the tape quickly when it is stopped, press FF>> on the remote
control, or rotate the shuttle dial to the right and release it.

To rewind the tape quickly when it is stopped, press <<REW on the remote
control, or rotate the shuttle dial to the left and release it.

You cannot see the tape picture or hear the tape sound when you use fast
forward or rewind, but you can use the counter to locate a specific
section of tape.

To use visual search, begin tape playback.  Then press FF>> on the remote
control, or rotate the shuttle ring to the right slightly and hold it
there to search forward.  To search in reverse, press <<REW, or rotate the
ring to the left slightly and hold it there.

You can select from two search speeds.  To search faster using the shuttle
dial, rotate it further right or left.  Rotating the ring all the way to
the left or right locks the VCR into the faster visual search speed. 
Press PLAY/DOUBLE SPEED to return to normal playback.

On the remote control, press FF>> or <<REW again to slow down; press FF>>
or <<REW once again to return to the faster search speed.

Release the ring or press PLAY/DOUBLE SPEED on the remote control to
return to normal playback.

NOTES:  VCR must appear on the VCR's display to use visual search.

        During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture quality
        is lower than during normal playback.  The search picture is best
        with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed.

        You can also enter the visual search mode from the freeze-frame
        mode.  During freeze-frame, rotate and hold the shuttle ring to
        the left for reverse visual search:  release the ring to return to
        freeze-frame.  Rotate the ring all the way to the left to lock
        into reverse visual search.

        Visual search from freeze-frame only works in the reverse mode --
        you cannot use it to search forward.

VARIABLE SPEED SLOW MOTION

Using the Shuttle Dial

During freeze-frame, rotate the ring to the right slightly and hold it
there to start slow-motion playback at 1/30 of the normal playback speed. 
Rotate it further right and hold it for a playback at the 1/10 of the
normal playback speed.  Release the ring to return to freeze-frame.

Rotate the ring all the way to the right to lock into slow motion playback
at the 1/10 speed.  Press PLAY/DOUBLE SPEED or PAUSE/STILL to return to
normal playback or freeze-frame.

Using the Remote Control

Press SLOW during playback, freeze-frame, quick motion, or visual search. 
You can use SLOW \/ or SLOW /\ to vary the slow speed from 1/30 to 1/5 of
the normal playback speed.

Press PLAY/X2 to resume normal playback.

NOTES:  During slow motion, the sound is muted and the picture quality is
        lower than during normal playback.  The slow motion picture
        quality is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed.

        If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes, the
        VCR automatically stops.

        If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking control by
        using CHANNEL \/ or /\.  (See "Manual Tracking Control.")

        To reduce or eliminate jitter in a slow-motion picture, first
        press PAUSE/STILL and press and hold down CHANNEL \/ or /\ until
        the picture is clear.

USING INDEX SEARCH

The VCR has the Digital Program Search System (DPSS).  When you start
recording, the Model 102 automatically marks the tape with an index
signal, and DPSS ENTER flashes on the VCR's display.

You can use the index search function:

    Return to the beginning of the current recording.

    Skip to the beginning o the next program.

    Locate a particular recording, if there are several recordings on a
    tape.

The VCR can search for up to 9 index signals.  To make it easier to locate
a recording, we recommend that you list the index numbers for the
recordings on the VHS cassette box.

While in the stop or play mode, press DPSS /\ (to search forward) or DPSS
\/ (to search backward) on the remote control repeatedly until the number
of recordings you want to skip appears on the TV's screen.

For example, if the tape is at recording 2 and you want to watch recording
8, press DPSS /\ 5 times (to skip past recordings 307).  If the tape is at
recording 9 and you want to watch recording 4, press DPSS \/ 5 times (to
skip past recordings 9-5).

The index search starts immediately as you release the button.  When the
VCR detects an index signal, the counter display reduces by one.  When the
counter reaches the number of recordings you specified to skip, the search
stops and playback automatically starts.

NOTE:  The only way to add an index signal is to start a new recording. 
       You cannot erase an index signal (only record over it.)

MODE LOCK

You can lock in any selected operation mode on the VCR (including power
off) to prevent accidentally changing to another  mode or to prevent small
children from operating the VCR.  All modes remain locked until you
release the lock using the remote control.

NOTE:  Auto-release of the freeze-frame mode and the record pause mode
       still function during mode lock.

To activate mode lock, press and hold MODE LOCK on the remote control
until the LOCK indicator flashes on the display and then lights steadily,
showing the mode lock function is active.

To release mode lock, press and hold down MODE LOCK on the remote control
until the LOCK indicator disappears.

REAL-TIME COUNTER

Your VCR's counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape
count.  Press DISPLAY on the remote control until the counter appears on
the VCR's display.

To use the counter most effectively, always rewind tapes to the beginning
before you play them and press CANCEL to set the counter to 0:00.00.  As
you record or play the tape, the counter should be the same(plus or minus
a few counts) for the same locations on the tape.

Using the Counter Memory/Zero Back Function

You can reset the counter to 00:00.00 at any position on the tape and then
press ZERO BACK on the remote control to return to that position.

To use the memory/zero back function, follow these steps.

1.  Press DISPLAY on the remote control until the counter appears on the
    VCR's display.

2.  Press CANCEL on the remote control at the location you want to return
    to.  The counter displays 0:00.00.

3.  When you want to return to the selected location, press ZERO BACK. 
    The tape rewinds or fast-forwards and automatically stops at 0:00.00
    on the display.

NOTES:  If you rewind the tape past the zero point, the display shows the
        time with a minus (-) sign.

        The counter uses special signals on a recorded tape.  Therefore,
        the counter does not work with blank tapes or blank portions of
        partially recorded tapes.

        To return to the clock display, press DISPLAY again.

AUTO TRACKING SYSTEM

The auto tracking system automatically adjusts tracking when you start
playback.  The TRACKING indicator flashes while the system is in
operation.

When different parts of the tape are recorded at different speeds, the VCR
automatically readjusts the tracking at the beginning of each recording. 
If you need to adjust the tracking manually, see "Manual Tracking
Control."

MANUAL TRACKING CONTROL

If the VCR's picture is poor, press and hold down CHANNEL \/ or /\ on the
remote control to manually adjust the tracking.  Press both \/ and /\ to
re-activate the automatic tracking system.

NOTE:  You might need to readjust the control slightly for each tape you
       load.

A.I. PICTURE

The A.I. (artificial intelligence) picture system of your Model 102
reduces on-screen noise you might notice when you play back older,
partially demagnetized tapes (such as tapes with a high frequency of
usage, like rental videos).

When A.I. is on, it reduces the noise in the picture.  However, the image
itself might be affected and become less sharp.

You can switch the A.I. picture mode on or off.  At the SET UP menu,
select 4: A.I. PICTURE  and use CHANNEL \/ or /\ to set the A.I. picture
function on or off.  Select 5: END to return to the normal screen.
