Portavision 4 1/2" Television with Cassette Recorder (160-0128) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 31564 POWERING THE SYSTEM You can operate your system using any of these power sources: Ten D batteries Standard household AC power (with the supplied AC adapter) 12-volt vehicle battery power (with the supplied DC adapter power cord) Using Battery Power You can use ten D batteries (not supplied) to power your system. For the best results, we recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-550. Follow these steps to install batteries. 1. Raise the telescoping antenna and remove the battery compartment cover by pressing the cover's two latches in the direction of the arrows. 2. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the battery compartment. CAUTION: Installing the batteries incorrectly can damage your system. 3. Replace the cover. NOTES: Battery life can vary greatly, depending on how you use your system. When batteries weaken and the TV picture shrinks, replace the batteries. Batteries last longer with radio operation than with TV or recorder operation. If you do not intend to use your system for a week or more, remove the batteries. Never store your system with batteries inside. They can leak damaging chemicals. Using AC Power Plug the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the system's DC INPUT 12V 1.2A jack. Plug the other end of the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. CAUTION: The supplied adapter supplies 12 volts with the center tip set to positive, and delivers the 1.2 Amps the system draws. Its plug properly fits the system's DC INPUT 12V 1.2A jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the system or the adapter. NOTE: When you connect the AC adapter power cord, the batteries (if installed) are automatically disconnected. Using Vehicle Battery Power You can use the supplied DC adapter power cord to power the system from a vehicle's battery if the vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. CAUTIONS: The vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. You must use an adapter that supplies 12 volts DC power and delivers at least 800 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to positive, and it must have a plug that properly fits the system's jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could damage the system. Be sure you plug the adapter into the system before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket, and be sure you unplug the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the system. Otherwise, the unconnected plug might touch a metal object and damage the adapter or your vehicle's electrical system. Follow these steps to use a vehicle's battery power. 1. Plug the small end of the DC adapter into the system's DC INPUT 12V 1.2A jack. 2. Insert the DC adapter's larger end into your vehicle's cigarette- lighter socket. When you connect the DC adapter, the batteries (if installed) are automatically disconnected. ANTENNAS The built-in telescoping rod antenna usually provides good reception for the FM radio and for the TV. For VHF reception, extend the antenna to its full length for the best reception of channels 2 to 6 (VHF-Lo). Use the antenna at a shorter length for channels 7 to 13 (VHF-Hi). For channels 14 to 69 (UHF), use the antenna at full length. An outdoor antenna is not usually necessary. But if you need better reception, you can use a TV/FM antenna. Connect this type of antenna to the EXT ANT jack with the external 300-ohm antenna adapter (supplied). Check your local Radio Shack store for antennas suitable for your needs. WARNING: When you install an outdoor antenna, use extreme caution. If the antenna starts to fall, let it go! It could contact overhead power lines. If the antenna touches the power line, contact with the antenna, mast, cable, or guy wires can cause electrocution and death. Call the power company to remove the antenna. Do not attempt to remove it yourself! USING THE SHOULDER STRAP 1. Thread the screw at one end of the strap into the right hole on the top of the system. 2. Then thread the other end's screw into the left hole on the top of the system. (EB 3/28/96)
