Model 161 Moviecorder (160-0862) Power Sources Faxback Doc. # 31676 SELECTING A POWER SOURCE You can power the camcorder from any of three sources - the AC adapter/ charger, the battery pack, or your vehicle battery. USING THE BATTERY PACK You must charge the supplied battery pack before you can use it to power the camcorder. CAUTIONS: Use only the supplied battery pack, or a replacement battery pack of the same type (CMC No. 16-2330, available through your local Radio Shack store). Do not dispose of the battery pack in the fire because it can explode. Do not open or mutilate the battery pack. Be careful not to short the battery pack with conducting materials, such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery pack or conductor might overheat and burn. At the end of the battery pack's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are; municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Charging the Battery Pack NOTE: Although you can charge the battery pack in temperature between 32 degrees and 90 degrees F, for the best results, we suggest you charge the battery pack in a temperature range between 50 degrees and 86 degrees F. CAUTION: Use only the supplied AC adapter/charger to charge the battery pack. Use of any other adapter/charger could damage the battery pack. Also, do not use the supplied AC adapter/charger to charge any battery pack except the one supplied (or a replacement battery pack of the same type). 1. Align the battery pack's | mark with the | mark on the adapter/charger. Press the battery pack against the adapter/charger and slide it to the right as shown until it locks into place. 2. Plug the AC adapter/charger's power cord into a AC outlet. The CHARGE indicator lights and charging begins. 3. When the battery pack is charged, the CHARGE indicator goes off. Remove the battery pack by sliding it off, and then unplug the adapter/charger from the outlet. Battery Pack Usage Hints The recording time is shorter in cold temperatures. During charging and refreshing, the battery pack and adapter/charger feel warm. This is not a malfunction. It takes about 70 minutes for the battery pack to fully charge. The exact charging time depends on the ambient temperature and the condition of the battery pack. Set the battery pack's charge reminder to remind you if you have charged the battery pack. Set the reminder to the red dot when the battery pack is discharged and to black after you charge the battery pack. Recording with many starts and stops, frequency zooming, and recording in low temperatures might shorten actual recording times. Be sure to turn the power off when not recording. We recommend you prepare an extra battery pack to minimize recording interruptions. Do not use an insufficiently charged or discharged battery pack. Use of such batteries might cause the power to automatically stop during camcorder operation, possibly damaging both the battery pack and the camcorder. The camcorder uses a small amount of battery pack power even when the camcorder's power is off. Consequently, if you are not going to use the camcorder for an extended period, remove the battery pack before storing it. Recharge the battery pack right before recording. A battery pack stored for an extended time will naturally wear down, resulting in decreased recording time. Extending the Battery Pack's Life Refresh the battery pack as described in "Refreshing the Battery Pack." Occasionally use the battery pack until its charge is fully drained and the camcorder becomes inoperable before recharging. This prevents the battery pack from losing its full charging capacity. Do not try to recharge a fully charged battery. Store the battery pack in a cool, dry place. Conditioning the Battery Pack Condition the battery pack once for every ten times you recharge the battery pack. This extends the battery pack's life. NOTE: Do not refresh a fully-charged battery pack. To refresh the battery pack: 1. Connect the battery pack to the adapter/charger, and connect the adapter/charger to an AC outlet. 2. Press CONDITION on the adapter/charger. The CHARGE indicator blinks while the battery pack is being refreshed. It takes about 2 hours for the battery pack to refresh. When refreshing is complete, charging starts automatically, and the CHARGE indicator lights continuously. ATTACHING THE BATTERY PACK TO THE CAMCORDER Follow these steps to attach the battery pack to the camcorder. 1. Align the battery pack's alignment mark (| and |) with the camcorder's alignment mark. 2. Gently press the battery pack against the camcorder, and slide it to the right until it locks in place. NOTE: Be sure the battery pack fits exactly. Attempting to install the battery pack improperly can damage the battery holder on the camcorder. To detach the battery pack from the camcorder, slide BATTERY EJECT in the direction of the arrow. USING AC POWER Use the supplied AC adapter/charger and the adapter extension to power the camcorder directly from an AC outlet. 1. Attach the adapter extension's connecting plate to the camcorder. 2. Plug the other end of the adapter extension into the adapter/charger's DC OUT 6V 2A jack. 3. Insert the adapter/charger's plug into an AC outlet. The adapter/ charger's POWER indicator lights. CAUTION: The supplied AC adapter/charger is specially designed for use with the Model 161. Never use it to power any other device. NOTE: The AC adapter/charger is compatible with AC electrical systems between 50 Hz and 60 Hz within the range of 110 V to 240 V AC. If you want to power the camcorder in a county with a different AC electrical system, use an appropriate adapter. See your local Radio Shack store for more information. USING THE OPTIONAL VEHICLE ADAPTER/CHARGER CAUTIONS: Use this power source only if your vehicle has a 12-volt negative-ground electrical system. Use only the recommended vehicle adapter/charger, Sharp VR-U100CH, (CMC No. 16-2022). The recommended vehicle adapter/charger is specially designed for use with the Model 161. Never use it to power any other device. To power the camcorder using the vehicle adapter/charger, do the following: 1. Attach the adapter extension's connecting plate to the camcorder. 2. Plug the other end of the adapter extension into the vehicle adapter/ charger's DC OUT 6V 2A jack. 3. Plug the vehicle adapter/charger's power cord into your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. NOTES: Be sure to push the plug completely into the cigarette-lighter socket. Be sure the socket is free from ashes and other debris. You can also connect the vehicle adapter/charger to the cigarette-lighter socket as described above, and charge the camcorder's battery pack using the vehicle adapter/charger. Connect the battery pack to the vehicle adapter/charger just as you would to the supplied adapter/charger to charge it. CAUTIONS: Before you start the vehicle's engine, disconnect the adapter/charger from the cigarette-lighter socket. When you unplug the camcorder, turn off the camcorder's power switch and remove the vehicle adapter/charger from the cigarette-lighter socket first; then unplug the power cord from the camcorder.
