Model 43 Stereo Hi-Fi VCR (160-0613) Special Functions Faxback Doc. # 32923 TAPE MOTION DISPLAY This display tells you the tape-motion mode of the VCR at all times. Stop Play Record Rewind Reverse Video Search Stop Pause Fast Forward Forward Video Search Still Recording Pause PICTURE ADJUSTMENT (Front Panel Only) The PICTURE control is actually a detail enhancement control. Adjust the control during playback for the picture sharpness or softness you desire. DUAL-SPEED VISUAL SEARCH Visual search allows you to view a tape in the forward or reverse direction at one of two fast-search speeds. To search at the slower search speed, begin regular playback of a tape. Then, press and release (FAST-F) or (REWIND). Release the button to search at the slower speed. Press (PLAY) to return to normal playback speed. During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture is lower quality than during normal playback. The picture is best with recordings made at the EP speed. FREEZE-FRAME Freeze-Frame allows you to stop the action while playing a tape. Press (PAUSE/STILL) during playback to freeze the picture. Press it again to return to normal playback. During Freeze-Frame, the picture is lower quality than during normal playback. The picture is best with recordings made at the EP speed. NOTES: Adjusting NORMAL TRACKING before using Freeze-Frame reduces or repositions video noise. If you leave the VCR in the Freeze-Frame mode for more than five minutes, it automatically switches to the stop mode. FRAME ADVANCE (Remote Control Only) During Freeze-Frame, you can advance the picture one frame at a time by pressing (FRAME). You can use this feature only on EP-speed recordings. SLOW-MOTION/QUICK-MOTION (Remote Control Only) When playing an EP-speed recording, press (QUICK) to double the playback speed. Press (SLOW) to cut the playback speed in half. The sound is muted during slow- and quick-motion. Press (PLAY) to return to normal playback speed. NOTE: Adjust the SLOW TRACKING control to reduce video noise during slow motion. DIGITAL COUNTER WITH MEMORY (Remote Control Only) Use the digital counter and memory functions to mark and return to specific locations on a video tape. To use either function, press (MEMORY/COUNTER) so that the counter appears on the display. To use the counter most effectively, always rewind tapes to the beginning before using them. Then, press (RESET) to set the counter to 0000. As you record or play a tape, note the counter reading at locations you wish to return to. Then, if you start at the beginning of the tape with a counter reading of 0000 the next time you play the tape, the numbers should be the same (plus or minus a few counts) for the same locations on the tape. To use the memory function, press (RESET) at a tape location you wish to return to-the counter displays 0000. Then, continue recording or playback. When you are ready to return to the selected location, press (MEMORY/ COUNTER) so that M appears on the display-then, press (REWIND). The VCR stops when the counter might overshoot to 9999 in some cases.) NORMAL AND SLOW TRACKING CONTROL (Front Panel Only) The NORMAL TRACKING control lets you adjust your VCR for the best playback of tapes made on other VCRs. If the picture quality is poor, adjust this control for best results. The center, or detent, position is usually best for recording and playback of tapes made on the Model 43. The SLOW TRACKING control lets you adjust your VCR for the best slow-motion playback of tapes made on other machines. If the picture quality is poor, adjust this control for best results. The center, or detent, position is usually best for slow-motion playback of tapes made on the Model 43. NOTE: The tracking control does not affect recording. FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND Use (FAST-F) and (REWIND) when the VCR is in the stop mode to move the tape quickly in the desired direction. There is no picture or sound when you use (FAST-F) or (REWIND), but you can use the counter and memory functions to locate specific sections of the tape. RECORD PAUSE Use (PAUSE/STILL) during recording to edit out unwanted material, such as commercials. Simply press the button at the beginning of the unwanted material. The tape stops temporarily. Press the button again to resume recording. Using (PAUSE/STILL) makes a smooth, almost unnoticeable edit. If you use (STOP), there will be a glitch at the edit point. NOTES: You can use (PAUSE/STILL) during timer recording, but the VCR switches to the manual recording mode. If you leave the VCR in the pause mode for more than five minutes, it automatically switches to the stop mode. AUTOMATIC REWIND SYSTEM When the tape ends during manual recording, playback, or fast-forward, it automatically rewinds to the beginning (or to the 0000 counter reading if the memory function is activated). DEW PROTECTION SYSTEM Moisture condensation inside the VCR can cause tape jams or video head damage. The dew protection system helps avoid such damage by preventing VCR operation when it senses excess moisture. Activation of the dew protection system is indicated by a flashing stop indicator (SYMBOL). You can resume normal operation only after the moisture is gone and the indicator stops flashing.
