Video Guide User's Manual (150-1980) Setup "B" Faxback Doc. # 33508 Side 1 Setting Up Your VideoGuide - Start Here Before you begin, we suggest you watch the enclosed videotape. 1. Unpack all of the parts. 2. Install batteries. Install 2 AAA batteries in the remote control and 4 AAA batteries in the receiver. (Batteries not included.) 3. Connect the VideoGuide receiver to your TV, (see Faxback Doc. # 33513). A. Unplug the cable that is currently plugged into the antenna/cable input of your TV (labeled A, see Faxback Doc. # 33513) and plug that cable into the input on the VideoGuide video switch (labeled B). B. Take the SHORTER cable coming from the video switch (labeled C) and plug it into the antenna/cable input of your TV. ! Important: this cable must be plugged into your TV, not your VCR or cable box. TIP: For additional equipment configurations, please see Faxback Doc. # 33505 of the User's Manual. 4. Connect the cables to the VideoGuide receiver, (see Faxback Doc. # 33514). Connect the video switch, AC power adapter, and infrared extended to the VideoGuide receiver. 5. Connecting the Infrared extender: finding the sensor. The infrared extender helps the VideoGuide receiver control your VCR and cable box (if you have one). NOTE: The sensor is where your VCR receives the infrared signals from your remote control. On some VCR's there is an area labeled "sensor." If there is no area labeled "sensor," you can use your VCR remote control to find the sensor area. Simply hold your VCR remote so it is TOUCHING the front of your VCR and search for the sensor by moving the remote along the front while pushing the power button on and off. When your VCR turns on or off, you've found the sensor. Note where the sensor is - and go to Step 6. (If you have a cable box, repeat this procedure; you will attach the 2nd infrared emitter to your cable box in Step 6.) 6. Connecting the infrared extender: Attaching the infrared emitters. The infrared emitters on the infrared extender act like tiny remote controls and help VideoGuide control your VCR and cable box. If you do not have a cable box, you will not need to use the 2nd infrared emitter A. Attach the infrared emitters to the sensors you found on your VCR (and cable box) in Step 5. B. Place the VideoGuide receiver so that the lip on the front slightly overhangs your TV. NOTE: The overhanging lip of the VideoGuide receiver contains emitters that enable the receiver to send commands to control your TV, just as a remote control does. Depending upon the placement of your VCR and cable box without the use of the infrared extender. 7. Plug in VideoGuide, turn your TV to channel 3, and begin the on-screen tutorial. A. Plug in the AC adapter. When properly plugged in, you will see a green light on the back of the receiver. !Do not plug the adapter into the cable box or an outlet controlled by a wall light switch. VideoGuide must receive power at all times. B. Turn your TV to channel 3 - you should see the "Welcome to Video Guide" screen. C. Begin the VideoGuide tutorial - simply follow the directions at the bottom of each screen. Use the VideoGuide remote. NOTE: If you do not see this screen, check your connections in Steps 3 and 4, making sure they are correct. Make sure there is power going to your VideoGuide receiver. D. VideoGuide needs to know your zip code and whether you have cable service and a cable box. Simply follow the directions in the gray box at the bottom of each screen. Press the RIGHT ACTION button to go to the next screen. NOTE: You do not need to have cable service or a cable box to use Video Guide. 9. Tell VideoGuide what remotes you have. Next, VideoGuide needs to know what remotes you use to control your TV, VCR, and cable box (if you have one). The process for teaching Video Guide each remote is essentially the same and is illustrated in Steps 10-13. You must go through Steps 10-13 for each remote you have. NOTE: You may use a universal remote to teach VideoGuide any of these remotes. If you do, make sure your universal remote is set in the correct mode - for example, set your universal remote to control your VCR when going through the VCR remote setup process, etc. ! Important note about remotes. During the remote teaching process in Steps 10 and 11, it is important to hold each remote so it TOUCHES Video Guide's infrared window (unless the on screen instructions specifically state otherwise). 10. Teach VideoGuide each remote. VideoGuide will ask you to hold each remote so that it TOUCHES the infrared window and ask you to press buttons until it recognizes that remote. Carefully follow the on-screen instructions at the bottom of each screen. TIP: Hold the remote so that it TOUCHES the infrared window and press each button until you see the gray information box turn green and then release it. If the information area does not turn green, make sure you are holding the remote so that it TOUCHES the infrared window and make sure that your remote has fresh batteries. TIP: Need to start over? If you need to start over, hold your VideoGuide remote so it TOUCHES the infrared window and press the RIGHT ACTION button to "Cancel." You will return to the screen which asks you if you have that remote. 11. Push each button asked for. If VideoGuide recognizes your remote after pressing one or two buttons, you will see a check mark on the screen and a message indicating that VideoGuide recognizes your remote. Sometimes VideoGuide does not recognize your remote right away, so it will ask you to teach it several buttons (You may need to teach Video Guide each button on that remote control.) Press each button briefly but firmly, just as you would to control that device. Simply follow the on-screen instructions at the bottom of each screen. TIP: Missing a button? If your remote does not have the button requested, hold your VideoGuide remote so it TOUCHES the infrared window and push the LEFT ACTION button to indicate "No Button". 12. Do you need to use an "enter" key? Next, tell VideoGuide if you need to use an "enter" key in order to change channels with this remote control. For example, if you push "1", "2", and "enter" to change to channel 12, then select YES. If you push only "1" and "2" to change to channel 12, select NO. When you have made your selection press the RIGHT ACTION button on your VideoGuide remote to continue. 13. Test your remote. After teaching VideoGuide each remote, VideoGuide will ask you to press the LEFT ACTION button on the VideoGuide remote to test that remote. The test for each device is different and is described below. TIP: If you are not sure if the test passed, you may run the test again by pressing the LEFT ACTION button on the VideoGuide remote. Cable box test: VideoGuide should change the cable box channel to 12. TV test: VideoGuide should change the volume on your TV up and then back down. Make sure the beeps you hear become louder then softer. VCR test: VideoGuide should turn your VCR on, record briefly, and stop. If VideoGuide performs the actions above, select PASS, otherwise select FAIL and repeat Steps 10-13 for that remote. (Make sure you've connected the infrared extender in Steps 4-6.) 14. If you see this screen, select the channel you leave your TV on, otherwise skip to Step 15. (NOTE: you may not see this screen.) 15. Setup is now complete! When you see this screen, VideoGuide setup is complete. Press the GUIDE button to go to the VideoGuide main menu. 16. Wait overnight. . . . Wait overnight for data to fill the VideoGuide services. Tomorrow, you should be able to use all of your VideoGuide services by pressing the GUIDE button on your VideoGuide remote control. NOTE: The Program Guide, Program Views, Sports Guide, News Guide, and Record List files will be gray until VideoGuide begins receiving information. Once VideoGuide receives the time in the upper right corner, the tiles will turn green and News Guide and Sports Guide will begin collecting data shortly thereafter.
