Easy Home Video Editor (150-1963) Equipment Faxback Doc. # 34336 Step 1 What you need Step 1.1: Choose your VCR and Camcorder. The Easy Editor works with two video machines - one to play the original tapes and one to record the finished productions. Generally you use a camcorder to play the original tapes but you can use a second VCR instead. In this manual, "camcorder" always refers to the camcorder or VCR used to play the original tapes and "VCR" always means the recording VCR. Step 1.2: Other Equipment You also need 4 AA batteries or a suitable AC adaptor (9-12 VAC, 350 mA min.). Note that power is not required to retain your editing information. You need a television, connected to your VCR. You need some blank video tapes in the format used by the VCR and you need some cables. Most setups use three audio-video cables with RCA-style connectors (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 15-1538). Step 1.3: Additional Equipment for Advanced Setups Stereo: If your camcorder and VCR are both stereo, you need an extra cable (or a dual cable) for the stereo connection. If only one unit is stereo, use a Y-adaptor (Radio Shack Cat. No. 42-2436) to connect the two channels together. See Step 2.5. Edit control: If your camcorder has Control-L or Panasonic 5-in edit control (see Step 1.4, "About Edit Control"), you need a special control cable (see "The Edit Control Cable" at the end of Step 1.4) to use the Easy Editor's Automatic Editing. No cable is needed for Instant Editing. Optional: If you have a title generator, you can add titles to your video as you edit. You can use a video processor to improve or modify the video image. Step 2.6 describes how to connect them. You can also use an audio mixer to change the sound track or add music and narration. Step 1.4: About Edit Control The Easy Editor works with most camcorders. Some extra editing features are available when the camcorder has an edit control connection and a real time counter. Edit control is a wired connection that lets the Easy Editor control the camcorder and red the tape counter. It is used only for the machine you use to play the original tapes - the recorder does not need edit control. A real time counter is a tape counter that displays hours, minutes, and seconds (not just a four-digit number). Does Your Camcorder Have Edit Control? The Easy Editor can use two kinds of edit control. Control-L(LANC) is provided on most camcorders made by Sony and Canon and on some Sony VCRs. (In the U.S., Sony-made camcorders include Ricoh, Nikon, Kyocera, and Yashica.) Panasonic 5-pin control is offered on some Matsushita-made units (Panasonic, National, Quasar, and other brand names). There are other forms of camcorder control that are not as capable, such as wireless (infrared) remote control, Control-S, and Synchro-edit. The Easy Editor is not compatible with these methods. Because the markings for edit control connections vary, it may be difficult to tell whether you have edit control by simply looking at the unit. Here are some typical edit control connections: 1 and 3 show typical Control-L connections. 1 is called a "sub-mini" connection. It's a single hole about 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) in diameter. 3 is a "5-pin DIN" connection. The symbol 2 is used on some models to indicate Control-L. On others, it may be marked "REMOTE" or "EDIT." 4 shows a Panasonic 5-pin edit control connection. It might be labeled "REMOTE" or "EDIT." Many VCRs have a small jack labeled "EDIT" that looks like a sub-mini Control-L. If the jack does not carry the Control-L symbol and the camcorder was not manufactured by Sony or Canon, it may be a simple "synchro-edit" jack. Synchro-edit is used for basic editing between two similar machines. It is not a full-function edit control jack and the Easy Editor cannot use it. The Edit Control Cable We include a sub-mini Control-L cable (the most common form of edit control) with the Easy Editor. If your camcorder uses a 5-pin DIN Control-L jack (Cat. No. CMC16-2334) or a Panasonic-type 5-pin jack (Cat. No. CMC16-2335), you need to order a special cable. These cables are available by special order through your local Radio Shack store.
