Closed captions allow viewers to read the dialogue and narration of television programs. Caption signals are transmitted as part of the TV broadcast and then decoded by the TV to display as words. Caption Tips Not all TV broadcasts include closed caption signals. Check your local programming guide. Sometimes TV stations broadcast two different caption signals on the same channel. By selecting MODE 1 or MODE 2 under MODE SELECTION, you can choose which signal you view. MODE 1 is usually the signal with the captions, while MODE 2 might show demonstration or programming information. Your TV might not receive caption signals normally in the following situations. 1. If these bad broadcasting conditions occur. IGNITION: Black spots or horizontal streaks appear, picture flutters or drifts. Usually caused by interference from an automobile ignition system, neon lamps, drills or other electrical appliances. GHOSTS: Double images appear. Ghosts are caused by the television signal following two paths: the direct path and another reflected from a building, hill, or other object. Changing the direction or position of the antenna might improve the reception. SNOW: Small dots in the picture. If your receiver is located at the fringe area of a television station where the signal is weak, you might need to install a special antenna to improve the picture. 2. You are using an old, bad or illegally recorded tape in the VCR connected to the TV. 3. An airplane or car is interfering with the TV signal. 4. The signal from the antenna is weak. 5. The TV is not receiving digital caption signals. Your TV can only decode digital caption information. If you connect a VCR that has captioning to the TV, not the following. 1. For the best reception of broadcast caption signals, connect a signal distributor. 2. Select the caption function for either the TV or the VCR, but not both. If both are decoding caption signals, captions might overlap or reception might be poor. Selecting the Caption Function 1. Press CAPTION on the remote control or FUNCTION on the front panel so DECODER appears. Then press VOLUME + or - so the arrow points to ON. ┌─────────────────┐ │ DECODER │ │ ──> ON │ │ OFF │ └─────────────────┘ 2. Press CAPTION or FUNCTION so DECODER MODE appears. Some examples of text broadcasts are captioned program lists, weather forecasts, stock exchange reports, and wire-service news. ┌────────────────────────────┐ │ VGE 1033 Closed Caption │ │ Calibrated Distortion Unit │ │ Text mode │ │ ────────────────────────── │ │ Green text │ │ Green underline │ │ Green Italics │ └────────────────────────────┘ Some television stations provide two different text services.
