Your new Smart One 2842 fax/modem is a high speed error correcting
telecommunication device that enables your computer to efficiently
communicate with thousands of computers across the globe.  You can use it
to acquire information from a variety of data base services including
Prodigy, CompuServe, Dow-Jones, Dun & Bradstreet, and MCI-Mail, to set up
your own bulletin board, to attend live on-line conferences, download
volumes of valuable information and much more.  The Smart One family of
modems, with its V.42bis capability and with a communication speed of
115,200 bps, literally turns your computer into a multi-functional data
communication powerhouse.

Besides allowing you to communicate with virtually any personal computer,
the 2842 Send and Receive faxes from any group III fax machine directly
from your computer at speeds of up to 14,400 bps.  As a fax, it supports
CCITT Recommendations V.17, V.29, V.27ter and V.21 channel-2.

You can fax a document in background mode and continue to perform other
computer tasks while it's processing. Your 2842VFC Voice Mail gives you
multiple voice mailboxes, which you can assign to business associates,
friends or family members.  Urgent call paging and remote retrieval allow
you to get and respond to important messages immediately.  The Call
Discriminator automatically distinguishes if your call is a fax, a modem
message or a voice call.  And, the Fax/Voice Mailbox lets you receive faxes
and voice mail using a single phone line.

Configuration settings are programmable and are retained in a nonvolatile
memory (NVRAM) on the Smart One 2842, allowing Plug-and-Play operation.

The Smart One 2842 is fully compatible with V.Fast and CCITT
Recommendations V.32bis, V.32, V.22bis, V.22, V.23, V.21, Bell 212A, 103
operating mode and Automode.  It supports CCITT V.42bis (BTLZ, MNP 5) data
compression and V.42 (LAPM, MNP 4) error detection protocols delivers
maximum performance and compatibility for global connectivity via multi-
mode operation.

The Smart One 2842 is approved by the Federal Communication Commission
(FCC) for direct connection to any telephone system in the United Stales,
for both pulse and Touch-Tone dialing.

Provided that a communication software is active in your computer, you 
may type in the AT commands to operate the fax/modem or use the software
commands to issue the appropriate commands to your fax/modem.

The Smart One 2842 can automatically dial or answer calls and also match 
the speed and protocol with its Automode feature. It can operate over a
dial-up as well as a leased line and can operate in both synchronous and
asynchronous modes.
