V.34 Faxmodem (250-3037) Installation Faxback Doc. # 14476 Unpacking Your 2842 (Internal) The complete package consists of the following items: 1. The manual. 2. The 2842 modem board. 3. One modular cable to connect the modem to the phone line. 4. Communication software floppy diskette(s) (optional). 5. Fax software diskette(s) & manual (optional). 6. One users manual for communication software (optional). Make sure that your package is complete and contains all the above items. We recommend that you save the box and the packing, as they can be used if your modem ever needs to be shipped. The configuration and installation of your modem consists of the following steps: 1. Preparing your modem for installation. 2. Setting the modem COM Ports. 3. Installing your modem. 4. Configuring Windows for COM Ports. 5. Installing your communication software. Preparing Your Modem For Installation Before installing your internal modem, you must verify that existing hardware or programs within your computer will not conflict with the configuration of your modem. To determine this: 1. Refer to the technical information about your computer and about any additional cards installed in your computer. This information is usually provided in the installation instructions accompanying your computer and the cards. 2. You can also run MSD utility provided in your DOS 6.0 (see DOS manual) or other computer diagnostics utilities to find out the presence of other cards and the settings in your computer. After you have completed the above, configure your modem with a setting that does not conflict with any other setting in your computer. SETTING THE MODEM COM PORTS - 2842 (INTERNAL) Your internal modem is configured for COM 2 in the factory. The switches in your modern select whether it is configured as COM I, COM 2, COM 3, and COM 4. All possible settings of your internal modem switches are shown below. If no other card in your computer is set to COM 2, OR is using IRQ3 there is no need to change the switches in your modem. 2. If another card has already been to COM 1 or COM 2, configure your modem's switches to COM 3 or COM 4 while selecting IRQ5 or IRQ7. 3. If you have a sound card that uses IRQ5 then configure your modem to IRQ7. 4. If you have a line printer set to LPT1, audio select IRQ1. 5. After you have completed configuring the modem dip switches proceed to install your modem. CAUTION: Be sure to observe proper handling and standard electrostatic discharge precautions when installing your modem. To install the modem: 1. Turn off and unplug all power to your computer. 2. Remove the cover of your computer (Refer to your system's documentation for removal procedures and safely precautions.) 3. Select an empty slot and remove the slot cover (a narrow metal strip that covers the opening in the frame for connection to external devices) by removing the screw and pulling out the strip. You just need to remove one screw. Retain the screw as it will be used later. NOTE: Choose the slot farthest from other adapters, cables, and system components to reduce the electrical noise.. 4. Observing proper electrostatic handling precautions, hold the board by its top and bracket, and insert it gently but firmly into the slot. Be sure to press it all the way in. 5. Fasten the modem to the computer frame with the screw removed in step 3. Make sure the modem is properly aligned and the telephone cable can be plugged and unplugged without difficulties. 6. Now you can replace the cover on the computer. 7. Use the telephone cord provided to connect your modem to the phone line. 8. You may wish to connect your telephone set and the modem to the same phone line, this way you can use the telephone set to make voice calls when the modem is not in use. 9. You are now ready to install the communication software and set up Windows. When installing your communication software make sure it has been set to the same COM Port configuration as your modem. 10. Turn your computer ON, load Windows and proceed to the next section "Selecting The COM Port And 1RQ In Windows." SELECTING THE COM PORT AND IRQ SETTINGS IN WINDOWS Please ensure that the Windows Port selection in the Control Panel has been configured to reflect the modem switch settings before running your communication application under Windows. For example, enter the Port selection in the Windows Control Panel if you have set your modem to COM 4 and IRQ5, then click on COM 4, click on Settings, click on Advanced and choose IRQ5. Once this is done, you may then continue with the installing and setup of your communication application. (ALL-04/10/95)
