Western Digital (250-0105/6) Ontrack Disk Manager Faxback Doc. # 15665 Hard Disk Upgrade Kit Most computer systems manufactured before 1994 do not allow you to access the full capacity of IDE hard drives without a software solution or BIOS upgrade. If you system was made prior to 1994 you will probably need to install Ontrack Disk Manager to access the full capacity of your Western Digital hard drive in DOS and Windows/Windows for Workgroups 3.1x environments. There are two text files provided on the Ontrack Disk Manager diskette: README.CAV addresses system specific issues, and WDCDRV.DOC addresses 32 bit disk access driver issues. Ontrack Disk Manager is only intended for use with DOS and Windows/Windows for Workgroups 3.1x. It provides quick installation and adds performance and functionality to your PC. Its quick installation capabilities eliminate the necessity to manually partition your hard drive via the FDISK program and logically format it via the FORMAT program. Ontrack Disk Manager is used to access the full capacity of your Western Digital hard drive. Some computer systems will not allow you to access the full capacity of IDE hard drives. Ontrack Disk Manager software is provided as one solution to overcome the 528 MB barrier. Ontrack Disk Manager can be used for DOS and Windows/Windows for Workgroups 3.1x environments. It cannot be used with the following operating systems; Unix, Novell Netware, OS/2, Windows NT and OS/2 for Windows. ON-LINE HELP Ontrack Disk Manager provides on-line help files. To access these help files: 1. Insert the Ontrack Disk Manager diskette into drive A. 2. Type: dm/h. Press ENTER. DATA COMPRESSION SOFTWARE Ontrack Disk Manager is compatible with Stacker and Doublespace disk compression utilities. Other disk compression software might cause problems. If data compression software had been used, you can either. Refer to the Ontrack Disk Manager on-line help files, or Contact Western Digital technical support services. HARD DISK DEVICE DRIVERS Products that use their own hard disk device drivers are not compatible with Ontrack Disk Manager. Before installing Ontrack Disk Manager, go into your CMOS setup and select the Hard Disk Type option. "Type 01." DO NOT SELECT "AUTO CONFIG." OR "USER DEFINED." For DOS and Windows/Windows for Workgroups 3.1x, follow these steps to install Ontrack Disk Manager. 1. Boot the system with a DOS diskette. 2. Insert the Ontrack Disk Manager diskette into drive A. At the A> prompt, type: dm NOTE: You cannot run Ontrack Disk Manager from a B: floppy drive. If your A: drive is a 5.25-inch drive, you must copy all the contents of your Ontrack Disk Manager diskette to a blank, formatted 1.2 MB 5.25-inch floppy diskette. To do this, place your Ontrack Disk Manager diskette in drive B: and a blank, formatted 1.2 MB diskette in drive A:, then type : COPY B: *.* A: You may now run the Ontrack Disk Manager program form your A: floppy drive. 3. At the Ontrack Disk Manager Main Menu, select Easy Disk Installation. 4. Ontrack Disk Manager displays the number of hard drives it detects. If correct, press ENTER. 5. The Hard Disk Selection Menu displays. (For multiple drive installations only.) CAUTION: Installing Ontrack Disk Manager on a drive that already contains software and data will result in the erasure of all software and data on that drive. Select the new Western Digital hard drive you are installing and press ENTER. NOTE: Ontrack Disk Manager will only install on the selected drive. 6. The Ontrack Disk Manager Status Menu displays information about your hard drive. Select YES to continue installation. Follow the on-screen instructions. Ontrack Disk Manager has successfully been installed! On-line help files are listed. Select a file to view, or press ESC to exit the help menu. You now have a bootable DOS partition on your new hard drive. Installing DOS Files Onto Your New Drive To install DOS onto your new drive you must reboot the system. When you see the following message, press the spacebar and Insert Disk 1 of the DOS installation software into drive A. Starting Dynamic Drive Overlay . . . Press the spacebar to boot from diskette . . . Continue to follow the on-screen instructions for DOS installation. Creating an Emergency Boot Diskette We highly recommend that you create an emergency boot diskette after installing Ontrack Disk Manager and DOS. If the Ontrack Disk Manager files are ever deleted from your hard drive or become corrupted, all the data on your hard drive could be lost. To create an emergency boot diskette: 1. Insert a blank diskette into drive A: 2. Type: format a:/s Press ENTER. 3. After the disk is formatted, copy the following files from your Ontrack Disk Manager diskette to the new diskette. DMDRVR.BIN and XBIOS.OVL 4. Create a CONFIG.SYS file on the new diskette by typing the following at the A:> prompt: copy con config.sys Press ENTER DEVICE=DMDRVR.BIN Press ENTER Hold the CTRL key down, and type: Z (Both keys must be pressed simultaneously.) 5.
