Multimedia Upgrade Kit (250-1085) Hardware Install Faxback Doc. # 2422 This section explains how to install an internal or external CD-ROM drive and how to connect the drive to the audio adapter. It also explains how to configure your MPC system. If you need to make changes to the preset configuration of the audio adapter, refer to Faxback Document # 2417 for configuration settings. Read the instructions completely before you connect and install the hardware. Proper planning and an understanding of the entire process are important for a successful installation. WARNING: Static electricity can destroy integrated circuits. Be sure to discharge any built-up static electricity by touching a grounded, metal object before handling the hard drive or touching any of the computer logic boards. If you are not familiar with computer hardware installations, have the audio adapter and the CD-ROM drive installed by qualified computer service personnel. Note: In the external kit, the external CD-ROM drive must be installed after the audio adapter is in place. The audio adapter and the interface board must be installed in neighboring expansion slots. ┌─────────────────────────────────────┐ │Installation with an Internal Drive: │ └─────────────────────────────────────┘ Your internal multimedia kit should include the following items: ° Tandy Multimedia Audio Adapter ° Internal CD-ROM drive with data and audio cables ° Multimedia PC System Disc ° Tandy Multimedia Install Diskette ° Microsoft Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions 1.0, Introducing Windows with Multimedia, Microsoft Windows User's Guide and Reference and MS-DOS 5.0 manuals ┌────────────────────────┐ │Preparing the Computer: │ └────────────────────────┘ In this installation, you will install the internal CD-ROM drive before installing the audio adapter. The procedure for installing the drive depends on your computer's chassis type. Turn off the computer, and disconnect the power cords and the data cables. WARNING: Failure to disconnect the computer from power can cause personal injury, or damage to the computer and the audio adapter. Remove the computer cover as illustrated in your user's guide. ┌───────────────────────────────┐ │Installing the Internal Drive: │ └───────────────────────────────┘ Look over the chassis types and determine which type is most like that of your computer. ┌──────────────────────────────────┐ │Installation in a Type A Chassis: │ └──────────────────────────────────┘ Note: Swing open case design, only one 5¼ inch device can be installed. In a Type A chassis, the CD-ROM drive can be installed in the 5 1/4" drive bay in the carriage. To install the drive in the 5 1/4" drive bay, follow these steps: 1. Orient the drive so that the bezel faces you and the connectors face away from you. 2. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay on the bottom of the carriage. 3. Align the mounting holes on the 5 1/4" bay with the mounting holes on the drive. 4. Secure the drive in the carriage, using three machine screws. 5. Connect the power cable. ┌──────────────────────────────────┐ │Installation in a Type B Chassis: │ └──────────────────────────────────┘ Note: This case design has plastic drive rails already installed in the drive mounting bay. In a Type B chassis, the CD-ROM drive can be installed in either the upper or lower 5 1/4" drive bay. To install the CD-ROM drive in a 5 1/4" drive bay of a computer with a Type B chassis, follow these steps: 1. Determine which 5 1/4" drive bay you will be using: If the drive is the first 5 1/4" drive bay in the system, you will install it in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay. If the drive is the second 5 1/4" drive in the system, you will install it in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 2. Remove the drive rails from the drive tower. 3. Using the four machine screws provided with the computer, attach the drive rails and metal grounding clips to the drive frame. 4. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay until the rails lock into place. 5. Connect the power cable. ┌─────────────────────────────────┐ │Installation in a Type C Chassis:│ (Older Tandy 3000/4000 series) └─────────────────────────────────┘ Note: This type of installation requires the hardware mounting kit that was originally supplied with the computer. If the hardware mounting kit is lost, another kit can be ordered from Tandy National Parts. The hardware mounting kit will include shock isolators, rubber grommets, and mounting screws. In a Type C chassis, the CD-ROM drive can be installed in either the upper or lower 5 1/4" drive bay. For easy drive installation into the lower drive bay of a Type C chassis, you can remove the drive tower as follows. (Removing the drive tower is not necessary for mounting a drive in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay.) 1. Note the location of any cables attached to the internal drives, and then disconnect the cables. 2. Detach the CMOS RAM battery from the Velcro strip on the side of the drive tower. Do not disconnect the battery. 3. Remove the four screws that secure the tower to the bottom of the computer chassis and the three screws that secure the tower to the front of the chassis. 4. Carefully lift the drive tower up and out of the system unit. ┌────────────────────────────────────────┐ │Type C Chassis, Lower 5 1/4" Drive Bay: │ └────────────────────────────────────────┘ If the drive you are installing is the first 5 1/4" drive in a Type C chassis, follow these steps to install the drive in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay: 1. Attach four shock isolators to the side of the drive. 2. Slide the drive into the lower 5 1/4" bay. If another device is installed in the upper 5 1/4" bay, be sure that the drive does not slide against it. Use four machine screws to fasten the drive to the drive tower. 3. If you removed the drive tower, reinstall it now. Be sure that no cables are under the drive tower when you replace it. 4. Reattach the CMOS RAM battery to the Velcro strip on the side of the drive tower. 5. Connect the power cable. ┌────────────────────────────────────────┐ │Type C Chassis, Upper 5 1/4" Drive Bay: │ └────────────────────────────────────────┘ If the drive you are installing is the second 5 1/4" drive in a Type C chassis, follow these steps to install the drive in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 1. Install four grommets into the mounting holes in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay. 2. Slide the drive into the upper 5 1/4" drive bay, being sure that it does not slide against any other drive in the drive tower. 3. If you removed the drive tower, reinstall it now. Be sure that no cables are under the drive tower when you replace it. 4. Reattach the CMOS RAM battery to the side of the drive tower. 5. Connect the power cable. ┌──────────────────────────────┐ │Installing the Audio Adapter: │ └──────────────────────────────┘ After installing the drive, configure and install the audio adapter as follows: Note: Be sure the computer is still unplugged and turned off. 1. Change jumper settings on the audio adapter as needed. Refer to Faxback Document # 2417 for the configuration settings. 2. Connect one end of the audio cable to the audio adapter connector (J2) labeled CD IN. 3. Connect the other end of the audio cable to the CD-ROM drive. 4. Securely connect the data/controller cable to the CD-ROM drive and the audio adapter. Depending on your computer system, you might need to turn the data/controller cable to align Pin 1 of the cable connector to Pin 1 of the board connector. Pin 1 can be identified by the colored stripe that runs the full length of the data/controller cable. If the turn is required, be careful not to bend the wires too much. The wires are fragile. There is only one way to connect each end of the cable. Be sure the index notch on the board connector matches the cable connector. 5. Install the audio adapter into an expansion slot, and gently press it into position. Use the screw you removed from the slot cover to secure the adapter. 6. Close the computer, and connect the peripherals. ┌─────────┐ │Startup: │ └─────────┘ After installing the CD-ROM drive and the audio adapter, follow these steps to set up your MPC for the first time: 1. Turn the computer off, and connect the video monitor, mouse, and the keyboard. 2. Plug the computer and video monitor power cords into a standard AC power outlet. 3. Adjust the audio adapter volume control on the back of your computer to the middle of the dial. For an illustration of the volume control location, refer to Faxback Document # 2413 for the board layout. Note: After installing Multimedia Windows, you can turn on your computer to view tutorials that show you how to use a mouse and connect peripherals to the audio adapter. 4. Connect stereo speakers, headphones, your home stereo, and any other multimedia peripheral to the audio adapter. You might have to change jumper settings, depending on your configuration. For example, use the line-out setting (the default setting) to connect a stereo system to the audio adapter. Change to the speaker-out setting to connect speakers. Refer to Faxback Document # 2417 for information on the microphone and speaker jumper settings. Note: If you connect headphones, connect them to the headphone jack on the audio adapter instead of the headphone jack on the CD-ROM drive. ┌─────────────────────┐ │Turning On Your MPC: │ └─────────────────────┘ To turn on your MPC, turn on the monitor and any external drive; then, turn on the computer. CAUTION: The built-in stereo power amplifier has a maximum output power of 2 watts per channel with 4-ohm speakers, and 1 watt per channel with 8-ohm speakers. If your speakers cannot handle this power, do not play them at maximum volume. WARNING: Be careful when using headphones. The sound can permanently damage your hearing if played at full volume.
