HARDWARE INSTALLATION BEFORE YOU BEGIN Read these hardware installation instructions completely before you install the CD-ROM drive. Proper planning and an understanding of the entire pro- cess is crucial to a successful installation. The CD-ROM adapter interface (or other boards inside your computer) might block access to the drive-tower mounting screws, depending on the type of chassis your computer uses. To insure easy installation, install the CD-ROM drive before you install the adapter interface. You might have to temporarily remove other installed adapter boards that block access to the drive-tower screws. NOTES: * Carefully read the instructions. * Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the CD-ROM drive. * Use a stable surface for installing the CD-ROM drive in your computer. ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── INSTALLING THE ADAPTER INTERFACE To install the adapter interface, do the following: NOTE: In some cases, it might be easier to attach the cables to the adapter interface before you install the adapter interface (see "Connecting Data and Power Cables" in this manual.) 1. Select an empty option slot closest to the drive tower. 2. Install the adapter interface in the slot--be sure it seats properly. 3. Secure the adapter interface with the appropriate screw. ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── INSTALLING THE CD-ROM DRIVE WARNING: Before you begin the installation, turn off the computer and unplug its power cord from the AC outlet. Then, disconnect the power cord and all other cables from the computer. Failure to disconnect the power can result in personal injury and damage to the computer and drive(s). CAUTION: Static electricity can damage electronic components. To prevent discharge of static electricity into your computer equipment, touch a grounded metal object before touching the drive or computer. CAUTION: For proper operation, the CD-ROM drive must be in a horizontal position when installed and operated. The procedure for installing the CD-ROM drive depends on whether your computer has a Type A, Type B, or Type C chassis. Compare your computer to the following illustrations to determine its chassis type. Then, follow the procedures for your computer's chassis type. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE A CHASSIS To install the CD-ROM drive in a Type A chassis, do the following: CAUTION: The computer chassis has sharp edges. 1. Remove the computer's cover as illustrated in the computer's user's guide. 2. Slide the drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay and secure it with the supplied mounting screws, as shown. NOTES: * You can install only one 5 1/4" device in a Type A chassis. * See the computer's user's guide for more information about drive installation. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE B CHASSIS To install the CD-ROM drive in the upper or lower 5 1/4" drive bay, do the following: CAUTION: The computer chassis has sharp edges. 1. Remove the computer's cover as illustrated in the computer's user's guide. 2. Select the 5 1/4" drive bay you want to use. 3. Remove the appropriate drive rails (upper or lower set) from the drive tower. 4. Using the four machine screws supplied with the computer, attach the drive rails and metal grounding clips to the CD-ROM drive as shown. Be sure to use the correct holes. 5. Slide the CD-ROM drive into the drive bay until the rails lock into place. NOTES: * When you mount the CD-ROM Drive in a Tandy 1000 SL/TL series computer, the drive's top surface touches the computer's cover. For more informat- ion on installing the drive, contact your nearby Radio Shack Computer Center. * See the computer's user's guide for more information about drive installation. INSTALLATION IN A TYPE C CHASSIS There are three 5 1/4" drive bays in a Type C chassis. If you want to install the CD-ROM drive in the lower 5 1/4" drive bay, you must remove the drive tower. (Removing the drive tower is not necessary to mount the CD-ROM drive in the middle 5 1/4" drive bay.) NOTE: The top 5 1/4" drive bay in most computers has a diskette drive installed. Some computers with a Type C chassis, such as the Tandy 3000/3000 HD (25-4001/4010), do not have an opening for the bottom drive bay in the computer's front panel. In these computers, you must mount the CD-ROM drive in the middle 5 1/4" drive bay. Before installing the CD-ROM in a Type C chassis, note the location of any cables attached to the existing drives and disconnect the cables. Then, follow these steps to install the CD-ROM drive. CAUTION: The computer chassis has sharp edges. 1. Remove the computer's cover as illustrated in the computer's user's guide. Skip to step 5 if your are mounting the CD-ROM drive in the middle drive bay. 2. Detach the backup battery from the side of the drive tower. NOTE: Do NOT disconnect the backup battery from the computer's main logic board. 3. Remove the four screws that secure the tower to the bottom of the com- puter chassis and the three screws that secure the tower to the front of the chassis. 4. Carefully lift the drive tower up and out of the chassis. 5. Slide the CD-ROM drive into the middle or bottom 5 1/4" drive bay. NOTE: If you are mounting the CD-ROM drive in the bottom drive bay, attach shock isolators (HC-3211 available at your nearby Radio Shack Store) to the CD-ROM drive as shown. 6. Use the four supplied machine screws to fasten the CD-ROM drive to the drive tower. (Install one of the rubber washers in each screw hole before you insert the CD-ROM drive in the drive tower.) NOTES: * If youre mounting the CD-ROM drive in the middle bay, attach machine screws and rubber washers (available at your nearby Radio Shack Computer Center) to the lower holes on the drive. * If you are mounting the CD-ROM drive in the bottom drive bay, attach machine screws (available at your nearby Radio Shack Computer Center) to the upper holes on the drive. NOTE: The hole pattern for the bottom drive bay might vary. Use the holes that properly align the front of the drive with the computer's front bezel. 7. If you removed the drive tower, re-install it. Be sure no cables are under the drive tower when you replace it. Re-attach the backup battery to the side of the drive tower. 8. Reconnect any cables you removed from the existing drives. NOTE: See your computer's user's guide for more information about drive installation. NOTE: The hole pattern for the bottom drive bay might vary. Use the holes that properly align the front of the drive with the computer's front bezel. CONNECTING DATA AND POWER CABLES The following steps describe how to connect the data and power cables to the CD-ROM drive. 1. Plug one end of the supplied ribbon cable into the CD-ROM's 40-pin connector matches the cable's connector. 2. Plug the other end of the ribbon cable into the adapter interface's connector labeled CN1. 3. Plug one of the computer's power cables into the drive's power connector. NOTE: In some instances, the computer's power cable might not have enough length to reach the CD-ROM drive's power connector. If not, you can use a power cable extension (278-767) available at a nearby Radio Shack Computer Center. 4. Plug one end of the supplied 4-pin coaxial cable into the CD-ROM's 4-pin audio connector. be sure the index notch on the drive's connector matches the cable's connector. 5. Plug the other end of the 4-pin coaxial cable into the adapter interface labeled CN2. 6. Remove the bezel panel from the computer's cover so that the front of the CD-ROM drive is visible when you view the front of the computer. Then, replace the computer's cover. Your CDR-100- has a stereo PHONES jack and VOLUME control on its front panel. These allow you to use stereo headphones to listen to compact discs (CDs). See "Playing Compact Discs" in this manual. However, the adapter interface has audio output jacks that let you connect the CD-ROM's audio output to an external amplifier and speakers. Using cables with RCA plugs on the ends, connect the adapter interface's audio output jacks, labeled R and L, to the LINE IN jacks of your amplifier. NOTE: The CD-ROM drive's VOLUME control does not affect the signal from the adapter interface output connectors. (dtc-08/02/93)
