Pro SW-10P 120 Watt (400-4070) Installation Faxback Doc. # 14204 Subwoofer CHOOSING A LOCATION Where and how you position your subwoofer greatly affects its bass response. Adjusting the subwoofer's volume control in relation to the left and right speakers and adjusting the subwoofer's high cut filter also affects your speaker's overall sound. Although low frequencies are nondirectional, factors such as room reflections, standing waves, resonance and absorption strongly affect your subwoofer's performance. For maximum bass output, place your subwoofer in a corner. To reduce output, move it away from corners and back walls. Even slightly moving the subwoofer can have a major effect on bass response. We recommend that you test the subwoofer in different locations to achieve the best balance between your satellite speakers (if used) and subwoofer. We also recommend that you place the PRO SW-10P at least two to three feet away from your television or computer's disk drive system so the speaker's magnet won't distort the colors of your TV picture or erase your floppy disks. CONNECTIONS AND CONTROLS 1. POWER ON/OFF-Move the switch up to turn power on, or down to turn power off. 2. POWER INDICATOR - Lights when power is on. 3. HIGH LEVEL INPUT-Connect to an amplifier or receiver's speaker outputs 4. LOW LEVEL INPUT-Connect to an amplifier or receiver's line out jacks. Input automatically sums left and right channel information. 5. VOLUME CONTROL-Lets you match the PRO SW-1OP's output level with your satellite speakers (if used). Increases subwoofer output as you rotate it clockwise. 6. FREQUENCY HZ-Controls the high frequency cutoff point. When you rotate it fully clockwise, it cuts high frequencies over 150 Hz. When you rotate it fully counterclockwise, it cuts high frequencies over 50 Hz. CONNECTING TO AN AMPLIFIER You can connect your PRO SW-1OP to an amplifier or receiver through either the line out terminals or the speaker terminals. Note: Turn off amplifier or receiver power before making any connections. CONNECTIONS TO LOW LEVEL INPUT JACKS Your amplifier or receiver line out jacks might be labeled either REC OUT or PRE OUT. Note: To use your amplifier or receiver's line out jacks, your amplifier or receiver should have at least two sets of line out jacks. Connecting the subwoofer to an amplifier or receiver with only one set of line out jacks might result in no sound from the satellite speakers. If this happens, follow the instructions under "Connecting to Speaker Terminals." 1. Connect the PRO SW-10P's LOW LEVEL INPUT jacks to the amplifier or receiver's line out jacks with phono cables (not supplied). Be sure to connect the jacks in phase, connecting left to left and right to right. 2. Connect optional left and right satellite speakers (if used) to the amplifier or receiver's output terminals as they are normally connected. Notes: If you connect your PRO SW-10P to your amplifier or speaker's line out terminals and your amplifier or speaker has a line out selector switch, be sure to switch it to the correct source. Your PRO SW-10P can be connected to your television if your television has line out jacks. Simply connect the LOW LEVEL INPUT jacks to the television's line out terminals with a phono cable. CONNECTING TO SPEAKER TERMINALS Connect the amplifier or receiver's speaker output terminals to the PRO SW-1OP's HIGH LEVEL INPUT speaker terminals. Be sure to connect the amplifier or receiver's positive (+) terminals to the subwoofer's positive terminals, and the amplifier or receiver's negative (-) terminals to the subwoofer's negative terminals. Wiring the PRO SW-10P with + to - causes greatly reduced bass performance. After you make all connections, tug lightly on the speaker wires to make sure they are secured. You can connect your left and right speakers to your amplifier or receiver or to the PRO-SW-1OP's HIGH LEVEL INPUT speaker terminals. The connection for the PRO SW-10P remains the same. If you use MEGACABLE or any other high quality, low gauge speaker wire, the terminals will be too small to accommodate the wires from both the left (or right) speaker and the PRO-SW-10P. You will need two pairs of Speaker Pins (Radio Shack Cat. No 278-437, available through Consumer Mail Center) to make the connection. Follow these steps to connect the wires to each terminal using the Speaker Pins: 1. Twist together the ends of the wires from the left speaker's positive terminal and the amplifier/ receiver's left positive speaker terminal. 2. Position the twisted wire ends between the open barrel ends of the Speaker Pin. 3. Using a pair of pliers, crimp down the open barrel ends of the Speaker Pin to hold the wire ends in place. 4. Plug the Speaker Pin into the proper terminal on the PRO-SW-10P. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the wires from the left speaker's negative terminal and the amplifier/receiver's left negative speaker terminal. Then repeat the same steps for the wires from the right speaker and the amplifier/receiver's right speaker terminals. VOLUME CONTROL ADJUSTMENT After all connections are made, adjust the volume control. 1. Rotate the VOLUME CONTROL knob to MIN. 2. Turn on your entire audio system. 3. Turn on the PRO SW-10P. 4. Play a CD, record, cassette, radio or TV and adjust the entire system's overall volume to a comfortable level. Rotate the PRO SW- 10P's VOLUME CONTROL clockwise, a little at a time, until you achieve a pleasing balance of bass between the PRO SW-10P and the main satellite speakers if used. Bass output should not overpower the main speakers, but should blend across the entire musical range. Once you have adjusted VOLUME CONTROL, use the amplifier or receiver's volume control to control the speaker's volume. HIGH CUT FREQUENCY ADJUSTMENT FREQUENCY HZ adjusts the frequency at which the subwoofer "rolls-off" between 50 Hz and 150 Hz. This control's setting depends on the low frequency capabilities of your satellite speakers (if used), speaker placement and other factors that affect bass performance. 1. Rotate FREQUENCY HZ clockwise until it sounds like the music is too bass-heavy. 2. Rotate the control counter clock-wise until the bass sounds more natural. If the mid-bass sounds natural but you want more low bass, turn FREQUENCY HZ down a little, then turn the volume control up by about the same amount. This increases low bass output while leaving the mid-bass output the same. To reduce low bass output without affecting the mid-bass output, rotate FREQUENCY HZ clockwise and volume control down.
