FM/AM/Cassette Component (140-0863) Operation Faxback Doc. # 14490 Stereo Music Center Before this equipment is turned on, both speakers should be connected and the SPEAKER switch in SPEAKER position. All cassette keys in the "up" position and the AC line cord plug inserted into a 120 VAC 60 Hz outlet. RECEIVER CONTROLS Depress the POWER switch. The FM/AM dial area will be illuminated. Set the FUNCTION SELECTOR to one of the radio positions. The SELECTOR tape play/mic rec switch must be in the SELECTOR position to operate the radio receiver. To tune in AM stations, set the FUNCTION SELECTOR to AM and rotate the TUNING KNOB until the dial scale indicator is at the chosen station. Adjust the volume by moving the concentric VOLUME controls clockwise to increase sound output, counterclockwise to decrease sound output. These controls are mechanically connected to move together, unless one knob or the other is purposely held to adjust left and right channels independently. The FM MONO position can be used to receive all FM broadcasts. Set the FUNCTION SELECTOR in the FM MONO position and use the TUNING KNOB to move the dial scale indicator to the chosen station. This position is normally used for reception of weak, noisy stereo FM stations and any other time that FM monaural reproduction is required. The FM AUTO position is used for all normal FM reception. Set the FUNCTION SELECTOR in the FM AUTO position and use the TUNING KNOB to choose the station. Stereo reception is automatic and the STEREO indicator light will glow on a stereo station. To set the proper balance between left and right channels in either monaural or stereo mode, set the FUNCTION SELECTOR in AM or FM MONO. The left channel sound output can be adjusted independently by holding the bottom knob and rotating the top knob to obtain equal output from both speakers. Similarly, by holding the top knob and rotating the bottom knob the right channel sound output can be adjusted independently. This adjustment should be made with the Cassanova speakers installed in their normal places and at the normal listening level for the room. Higher or lower listening levels may require readjustment of the controls. To turn unit off, depress POWER switch. ANTENNAS FM Indoor dipole antenna, Realistic Cat. No. 42-2385 or high gain outdoor 300 ohm antenna may be connected to the external FM ANTENNA terminals to obtain better reception of weak signals. Disconnect the FM capacitive lug and connect antenna transmission line. AM To improve signal strength of weak AM stations, connect a signal insulated 18 gauge wire, approximately 20 foot in length, to the AM ANTENNA terminal. In some locations where there are many electrical disturbances such as power lines, neon signs etc., the external antenna may pick up these disturbances. Therefore, try positioning this external wire as far away as possible from these noise sources. TAPE RECORDER-PLAYER OPERATION TAPE PLAY With all cassette keys in the "up" position, depress the STOP-EJECT key and the CASSETTE HOLDER will tilt upward. Insert a recorded cassette with the full reel on the left and the tape facing you into the CASSETTE HOLDER. Close the CASSETTE HOLDER downward. Place SELECTOR in the TAPE PLAY/MIC REC position. With the POWER switch in the "on" (down) position, depress the PLAY key. The tape transport will start into motion. VOLUME and TONE controls should be adjusted for desired listening level and tonal balance. If you desire to pause during playback, depress PAUSE key. To resume playback, depress PAUSE key again to release same to "run" position. To stop playback, depress STOP-EJECT key. To remove cassette, depress STOP-EJECT key once more and the CASSETTE HOLDER will tilt upward. One of the features of the Cassanova is the automatic stop. If you allow the tape to run to its full length, the transport mechanism will stop at the end of the tape; the CASSETTE HOLDER will tilt upward and the PLAY key will automatically clear to the "up" position releasing pressure between capstan and pressure roller. To play the other 2 stereo tracks of the cassette, remove the cassette and turn it over so that the fully wound right reel now becomes the left and follow same procedure as previously outlined. REWIND AND FAST FORWARD If you desire to rewind the tape to its full length, depress the REWIND key fully to its locking position. When the end of the tape is reached, the transport mechanism will stop automatically clearing the REWIND key and tilting the CASSETTE HOLDER upward. When turning unit off, make sure that all keys are in the "up" position before depressing POWER button. RADIO RECORDING With radio in operation and a blank cassette inserted and CASSETTE HOLDER in the down position, depress RECORD key. If you are listening to a stereo broadcast, place FUNCTION SELECTOR in FM MONO position. Advance RECORD LEVEL controls so that both pointers of the RECORD LEVEL METERS deflect equally and enter into the red zone only on the loudest passages. Failure to observe this precaution will result in distorted recordings. FUNCTION SELECTOR may now be returned to FM AUTO position if you are going to record an FM stereo program. Depress COUNTER RESET button and the DIGITAL COUNTER will indicate 000. Holding the RECORD key depressed, depress the PLAY key. The tape will start into motion and recording will take place. The position of the VOLUME and TONE controls have no effect on the recording and can be adjusted to your preference to monitor the recording. If you desire to pause during the recording, depress the PAUSE key. To resume recording, depress PAUSE key once more. To stop recording, depress STOP- EJECT key. To play back the recording, the tape must be rewound to the starting position as indicated by the DIGITAL COUNTER. Therefore depress the REWIND key and when the DIGITAL COUNTER indicates 000 depress the STOP- EJECT key. If the recording was started at the very beginning of the tape, the transport mechanism will stop automatically when 000 is reached. To play back the recording, place SELECTOR in the TAPE PLAY/MIC REC position and follow same procedure as outlined in paragraph "TAPE PLAY". NOTE: The PAUSE key may also be used to preset the recorder for instant start. To stop advantage of this feature, depress PAUSE key first, then depress RECORD and PLAY key simultaneously. The tape will not be in motion and recording will not take place. RECORD LEVEL controls can now be adjusted and when you desire to start the recording, merely depress the PAUSE key again. This allows you to listen to the broadcast and with the least effort start recording at the opportune moment. ACCIDENTAL ERASURE PREVENTION Each cassette has two tabs on the rear side. To prevent the recording from being erased, using a screwdriver or similar object, break off the corresponding tab. If you desire at some future date to rerecord or erase a tape where the tab has been broken off, merely cover the opening with a piece of plastic tape. When the tab has been removed you will not be able to depress the RECORD key. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FORCE THE RECORD KEY DOWNWARD UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS. RERECORDING AND ERASING TAPES To rerecord a tape, it is not necessary to erase the tape prior to recording same. The configuration of the erase and record heads is such that when the unit is in record mode and the tape is in motion, the erase head is energized and erases the tape before it reaches the record head. If you desire to erase the tape without recording, follow same procedure as for recording but reduce the RECORD LEVEL controls to maximum counterclockwise position. MICROPHONE RECORDING Turn VOLUME controls to maximum counterclockwise, zero volume, position. Insert microphone plugs into corresponding MIC JACKS. Place SELECTOR switch in TAPE PLAY/MIC REC position. With a blank cassette inserted and CASSETTE HOLDER in the down position, follow same procedure for setting RECORD LEVEL controls and recording as outlined in paragraph "RADIO RECORDING". In this mode of operation the FUNCTION SELECTOR is inoperative and in monitoring the recording, the VOLUME controls should not be advanced too far clockwise as this will result in acoustic feedback "audio howl" and echo effect. If you do not desire to monitor the recording in order eliminate these effects, place SPEAKER switch in the OUT position. Otherwise use a stereo headset the plug of which should be inserted in the PHONES jack and the SPEAKER switch placed in the OUT position. ADDING A RECORD PLAYER TO YOUR CASSANOVA MUSIC CENTER Practical considerations call for a record changer-sometimes known as an "automatic turntable" to be used instead of a manual player. Use the best you can afford - Realistic, Miracord, or Dual, are the preferred brands. Always use a MAGNETIC type cartridge with a diamond stylus. Preferred brands are Realistic (by Shure), Shure, Pickering. Every record player includes two audio shielded leads for stereo - these take the current set up within the cartridge by the mechanical effect of the record grooves coupling to the needle, and send this minute electrical current to the preamplifier stage of the equipment's amplifier section. They connect from the record player to PHONO input jacks. Every player also has an AC (motor) lead which must be plugged into a 120 VAC 60 Hz outlet. This AC lead has a 3rd wire running from it - usually green - with a bare, tinned end. Its purpose is to be attached to the ground screw. Its use is not mandatory and it is not dangerous to touch. PHONO RECORDING For phono recording follow same procedure as "RADIO RECORDING" but with the FUNCTION SELECTOR in the MAG PHONO position. NOTES: Do not attempt to depress or force the record key downward unless a cassette, the safety record tabs of which have not been removed, is inserted in the cassette compartment. Do not touch the highly polished surface of the record/playback or erase heads with any magnetic or metallic object. To maintain maximum fidelity and extend tape head life use Cassette Head Cleaner (Cat. No. 44-160) available at all Radio Shack stores. DO NOT use solvent or denatured alcohol. The capstan and pressure roller should be cleaned occasionally using a soft dry cloth. (br/all-04/04/95)
