MPA-200 Stereo PA Amplifier (320-3003) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 14635 CONNECTING THE GND (GROUND) SCREW TERMINAL Connecting a mixer or playing a turn table might cause excessive noise or hum. To prevent this, connect one end of a low-capacitance shielded wire to the amplifier's ground screw terminal, then connect the other end to the ground terminal on the mixer or turn table. Your local Radio Shack store sells suitable shielded wires. CONNECTING AN AUDIO MIXER OR PREAMPLIFIER The amplifier is equipped with both RCA and metric (6.35mm) type phone jacks. Connect your audio mixer's (or preamplifier's) left and right output jacks to the amplifier's LEFT and RIGHT INPUT jacks. CAUTION: Connect one type or the other, but do not connect both types at the same time as this will damage your amplifier. CONNECTING SPEAKERS You can connect 4-, 8-, or 16-ohm speakers to channels A and/or B of your amplifier. If you connect two pairs of speakers, be sure you follow these guidelines: * Speakers connected to the same channel (A or B) are part of a pair and must be of the same impedance. * Speakers connected to different channels (A or B) are not part of a pair and can be of a different impedance. 1. Prepare the speaker wire by removing about 1 inch of insulation from the end of the speaker wire you intend to connect to the amplifier. Then twist the exposed wire to secure all the wire strands. NOTE: Use 18-gauge speaker wire for lengths up to 25 feet; 16-gauge wire for lengths over 25 feet. We recommend you use the shortest length of wire possible. 2. Connect the speaker wires to the speaker's positive and negative terminals. Note: Most speaker terminals are either color-coded or have a mark that indicates the terminal's polarity. Usually, positive terminals are red or have a plus symbol (+), and negative terminals are black or have a minus symbol (-). 3. Connect the speaker wires to the receiver/amplifier's left and right speakers terminals according to the terminal color or polarity shown below. CONNECTING HEADPHONES To listen privately or monitor the sound sources, connect a pair of low impedance stereo headphones (not supplied) with a 1/4-inch plug into the PHONES jack on the amplifier's lower left front panel. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide selection of headphones. LISTEN SAFELY Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended, high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Follow these guidelines to protect your hearing, especially when you use headphones. * Always start by setting the volume to the lowest level possible before you begin listening. Put the headphones on, then gradually increase the volume as necessary. * Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over a period of time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. CONNECTING TO STANDARD AC POWER After making all other connections, set POWER 0/1 to 0 (to make sure the amplifier is off), then connect the AC power cord to a standard AC outlet. MOUNTING THE MPA-200 The amplifier's construction includes two slots on each side of the front panel which make it suitable for rack mounting. To mount the amplifier on an electronics equipment rack, tightly drive and secure mounting screws (not supplied) through the mounting holes. (SP/all-04/20/95)
