CD-3360 (420-5028) Power Sources Faxback Doc. # 16682 You can power your CD player with: Two AA alkaline or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (not included). Standard household AC, using an optional AC adapter. Your vehicle battery, using an optional DC adapter. USING BATTERIES You can power the CD player with two AA batteries. We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552) or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125). CAUTION: Use all alkaline batteries or all nickel-cadmium batteries. Do not mix these two types of batteries. Doing so might damage the CD player. Follow these steps to install batteries. 1. Press OPEN and lift the disc cover. 2. Press the battery compartment latch and remove the cover. 3. Set OFF/CHG (located inside the battery compartment) to OFF. Then, install two AA batteries, observing the polarity symbols (+ and -) shown inside the battery compartment. 4. Replace the battery compartment cover and close the disc cover. You can operate the CD player for about 4 hours on two alkaline batteries. Replace the batteries when the POWER indicator becomes dim. CAUTION: Never leave weak or dead batteries in the CD player. They could leak damaging chemicals. If you plan not to use the CD player for a month or more, remove the batteries. CHARGING NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES Nickel-cadmium batteries come fully discharged. You can charge the batteries while they are in the battery compartment using an optional 3V AC adapter, or you can use an optional battery charger. Your local Radio Shack store sells the necessary adapter and a variety of battery chargers. WARNING: Do not try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. Doing so causes the batteries to become very hot and possibly explode. To recharge nickel-cadmium batteries while they are in the battery compartment, do the following: 1. Set POWER ON/OFF to OFF. 2. Set OFF/CHG to CHG. Then, insert the nickel-cadmium batteries. 3. Set the adapter's tip to negative (-). 4. Insert the plug into the CD player's DC 3V jack. 5. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet (120 volts, 60 Hz). It takes about 8 Hours to charge fully discharged nickel- cadmium batteries. 6. After you charge the batteries, unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet, disconnect the adapter from the CD player, and set OFF/CHG to OFF. Charging Tips Occasionally discharge the batteries by playing the CD player until it no longer plays. Then, fully recharge the batteries. This helps restore the batteries' full charging capacity. Avoid charging the batteries in a hot environment (more than 113 degrees F). Doing so can permanently reduce the batteries' charging capacity. USING AC POWER You can power the CD player with standard AC power, using a 3-volt AC adapter. CAUTION: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 400 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the CD player or the adapter. 1. Set the adapter's tip to negative (-). 2. Insert the adapter's plug into the CD player's DC 3V jack. 3. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet. 4. Set POWER ON/OFF to ON. WARNING: If you connect the AC adapter when alkaline batteries are installed, DO NOT set OFF/CHG to CHG. Doing so causes the alkaline batteries to become very hot and possibly explode. USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER You can power the CD player with your vehicle's battery, using an optional DC adapter. CAUTION: This CD player is designed for use with vehicles that have a 12- volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of electrical system, but if you are unsure about the type your vehicle has, contact the vehicle dealer. Using the CD player with a different electrical system could damage the CD player or the vehicle's electrical system. 1. Attach the proper sized plug to the adapter cord, matching TIP on the side of the plug with negative (-) on the cord. 2. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 3. Insert the plug into the CD player's DC 3V jack. 4. Plug the other end of the adapter into your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. The red indicator on the adapter case lights. 5. Set POWER ON/OFF to ON. WARNING: If you connect the DC adapter when alkaline batteries are installed, DO NOT set OFF/CHG to CHG. Doing so causes the alkaline batteries to become very hot and possibly explode. CAUTIONS: You must use a DC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 400 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the CD player's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the CD player or the adapter. Always disconnect the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket first. Otherwise, a short circuit could occur that could damage the adapter or the vehicle's electrical system. Do not leave the adapter connected to the cigarette-lighter socket or to the CD player when the player is not in use. If you park your vehicle in the sun, temperatures inside can easily reach levels that could damage the CD player and the CDs. To prevent heat damage, avoid leaving the CD player or CDs in your vehicle. (br/all-08/24/95)
