AM/FM Stereo Mate (120-0169) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 3721 INSTALLING THE RADIO'S BATTERIES You need two AAA batteries to power your radio. We recommend alkaline batteries such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555. Note: When the batteries are low, the signal may fade in and out, the volume may decrease considerably, and the display will blank out. When this happens, replace both batteries immediately. Follow these steps to install the batteries. 1. Set the POWER switch to OFF. 2. Press the battery compartment cover and slide it off as indicated by the arrow on the cover. 3. Install two AAA batteries, as indicated by the polarity marks (+ and -) inside the battery compartment. 4. Slide the compartment cover back on until it snaps into place. Cautions: Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type. If you plan not to use your radio for an extended period of time, remove the batteries. BELT CLIP Use the belt clip on the back of the radio to secure the radio while you are on the move. To detach the belt clip, press down on the clip and slide it out. ATTACHING THE FM WIRE ANTENNA To receive FM stations, use the supplied FM wire antenna or a pair of headphones. To receive FM stations in stereo, use a pair of headphones. Note: If you connect headphones, the headphone cord acts as an FM antenna. To use the wire antenna: 1. Insert the antenna into the HEADPHONE jack. 2. Set HEADPHONES/SPEAKER to SPEAKER if you are using an antenna or to HEADPHONES if you are using headphones. Note: The STEREO indicator on the display does not light when you use the built-in speaker because of the one-speaker design of the radio. To listen to your radio in STEREO, use headphones. USING HEADPHONES For private listening, or to hear stations in stereo, use a pair of headphones (not supplied) with a 18-inch plug. A wide selection of headphones is available at your local Radio Shack store. To use headphones: 1. Insert the headphone plug into the HEADPHONES jack. 2. Set the HEADPHONES/SPEAKER switch to HEADPHONES. This disconnects the built-in speaker. To listen to an FM stereo station, set the FM ST/MONO switch to ST. STEREO appears on the display. If the FM stereo reception is full of static, set the switch to MONO. The signal is no longer in stereo, but the reception improves. Hearing Comfort and Your Health To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when using headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. SETTING THE FREQUENCY STEP SWITCH The radio has an AM/FM frequency step switch that sets the correct frequency steps for different countries. The switch is located in the battery compartment. Set the switch as follows: If you are in the United States, the switch is already set to A for you. In this setting, the AM frequency increments are 10 kHz and the FM frequency increments are 200 kHz. If you are in a country where the AM frequency increments are 9 kHz, set the switch to B. In this setting, the FM frequency increments are 50 kHz. (br/all-03/13/95)
