SYSTEM 729 MINI SYS. W/ CD Play., AM/FM Stereo, Dual Dub. Cass. Deck & Mix. (130-1276) Operation Faxback Doc. # 32480 USING HEADPHONES For private listening, you can connect a pair of headphones (not supplied) with a 1/8-inch plug, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 33-1022. Insert the headphones' 1/8-inch plug into the PHONES jack on the front of the System 729. NOTE: Connecting headphones automatically disconnects the external speakers. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE RADIO WARNING: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME to MIN before you turn on the system. 1. Set FUNCTION to RADIO to turn on the radio. The POWER indicator lights. 2. Set BAND to FM or AM to select the desired band. 3. Adjust TUNING until you receive the desired station. NOTES: For the best AM reception, rotate the System 729 to position the built-in AM antenna. For the best FM reception, fully extend the telescoping antenna and swivel it to the position that produces the best reception. The FM STEREO indicator lights when an FM signal is received in stereo. To improve reception of weak FM stations, set MODE/BEAT-CUT on System 729's back panel to 2 (MONO). The sound is no longer in stereo, but the reception should improve. 4. Adjust VOLUME, BALANCE, BASS, and TREBLE on the system to the desired levels. CAUTION: Do not set VOLUME too high while listening to a soft or quiet passage during a music program that also includes extremely loud passages. Due to the System 729's high fidelity and wide dynamic range, its speakers might be damaged by sudden, loud bursts of sound during some music programs. 5. Set FUNCTION to CD, TAPE or RADIO/CD OFF to turn off the radio. NOTE: You must set FUNCTION to RADIO/CD OFF to turn off the System 729. CD CARE TIPS Even though a CD is very durable, you should handle it with care. We recommend the following precautions. Keep the CD in its protective case or sleeve when you are not playing it. Keep the CD compartment clean. Handle a CD by the edges to avoid fingerprints which can prevent the CD player's laser beam from accurately reading the CD. Your local Radio Shack store sells a suitable CD cleaner kit. Do not write on either side of the CD, particularly the non-label side. (Signals are read from the non-label side.) Keep the CD dry. A water drop can act as a lens and affect the laser beam's focus. If you move the system from a very cold place to a warmer one, moisture can condense on the pickup lens, preventing the CD player from working properly. If this happens, turn the system off and wait 30 minutes for the lens to dry, then try it again. (LB/EB 4/19/96)
