SYSTEM 729 MINI SYS. W/ CD Play., AM/FM Stereo, Dual Dub. Cass. Deck & Mix. (130-1276) Cassette Operation Faxback Doc. # 32481 USING THE CASSETTE DECK The system 729 has two cassette decks. You can use PLAYBACK/RECORD 1 for normal playback, consecutive play, and dubbing (recording). You can use 2 PLAYBACK only for normal playback and consecutive play. Each cassette deck has a full-release auto-stop system to protect tapes and prevent pinch roller damage. When a tape reaches the end while playing, recording, fast-forwarding, or rewinding, the tape mechanism automatically stops. LOADING AND PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE WARNING: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME to MIN before you turn on the system. NOTE: Before playing or recording a cassette tape, take up any slack in the tape by turning one of the cassette's hub's with a pencil. If you do not remove excess slack, the tape might become tangled in the record/playback mechanism. Follow these steps to load and play a cassette tape in either PLAYBACK/ RECORD 1 or 2 PLAYBACK. 1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE or RADIO/CD OFF. 2. Press STOP/EJECT on either PLAY/BACK/RECORD 1 or 2 PLAYBACK to open the cassette compartment. 3. Load the cassette with its open edge down, the desired side facing out, and its full reel to the left. 4. Gently close the compartment door. 5. Press PLAY on the deck you are using. The POWER indicator lights and the cassette plays until it reaches the end of the side. NOTES: To temporarily stop playback, press PAUSE on the deck you are using. Press PAUSE again to continue playback. To fast-forward or rewind the tape, press STOP/EJECT then press FAST-F or REWIND on the deck you are using. Press STOP/EJECT when the tape reaches the desired location. 6. Adjust VOLUME, BALANCE, BASS, and TREBLE to suit your listening preference. 7. Press STOP/EJECT on the deck you are using to stop playback before it automatically stops. Press STOP/EJECT again to open the cassette compartment and remove the cassette tape. USING CONSECUTIVE PLAY You can set the tape player to play one side of a tape in 2 PLAYBACK, then automatically play one side of a tape in PLAYBACK/RECORD 1. 1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE or RADIO/CD OFF. 2. Load the cassette you want to hear first in 2 PLAYBACK, then load the other cassette in PLAYBACK/RECORD 1 with the open edges down, the desired sides facing out, and the full reels to the left. 3. Press PLAY on 2 PLAYBACK. The cassette in 2 PLAYBACK plays. 4. While the cassette in 2 PLAYBACK is playing, press PAUSE then PLAY on PLAYBACK/RECORD 1. When the cassette in 2 PLAYBACK finishes playing, the cassette in PLAYBACK/RECORD 1 automatically begins playback. TAPE TIPS Recommended Tapes Tape quality greatly affects the quality of the recording. We recommend Type 1 regular length (60-minute) normal-bias cassette tapes. We do not recommend long-play cassette tapes such as C-120s because they are thin and easily tangle. Erasing a Cassette Tape To record over a cassette tape, simply record as usual. The cassette deck records over the previous recording. To erase the entire cassette tape, set FUNCTION to CD, make sure there is no CD in the CD player, then let the tape record to the end. You can quickly erase sides of a cassette tape using a bulk tape eraser (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 44-232). Preventing Accidental Erasure Cassette tapes have two erase-protection tabs-one for each side. When a tab is in place, you can record on that side. To protect a recording from being accidentally recorded over, use a screwdriver to remove the cassette tape's erase-protection tabs. This prevents REC from being pressed. If you later decide to record on a tape after you have removed the erase protection tab for that side, place a piece of strong plastic tape over that side's erase-protection hole. Be sure you cover only the hole originally covered by the erase-protection tab. CAUTION: Removing the erase-protection tabs does not prevent a bulk eraser from erasing a cassette tape. Restoring Tape Tension and Sound Quality After you play a cassette tape several times, the tape might become tightly wound on the reels. This can cause playback sound quality to deteriorate. To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side, then completely rewind it. Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each side of the cassette's outer shell on a flat surface. CAUTION: Be careful not damage the cassette when tapping it. Do not touch the exposed tape or allow any sharp objects near the cassette. RECORDING You can use the System 729 to record onto a cassette tape from the following sources: Another cassette tape CD player Radio Combination of an audio source and your voice (using the microphone mixing feature) NOTES: Be sure the erase-protection tabs for the cassette you want to record on is in place. The recording level is preset. Adjusting VOLUME, BALANCE, BASS, or TREBLE does not affect the recording level or quality. DUBBING (COPYING) CASSETTE TAPES You can use the cassette deck's synchro-start feature to easily copy a tape by playing it in 2 PLAYBACK and recording it onto another tape in PLAYBACK/ RECORD 1. You can select between normal or high-speed dubbing, and you can monitor the tape as you dub it. 1. Load the cassette you want to copy into 2 PLAYBACK with the cassette's full reel to the left, the open edge facing down, and the side you want to play facing you. 2. Load a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into PLAYBACK/ RECORD 1 with the cassette's full reel to the left, the open edge facing down, and the side you want to record onto facing you. 3. Set the dubbing speed. To record in half the normal recording time, set FUNCTION to TAPE (DUBB.HIGH). To record at normal speed for the best sound quality, set FUNCTION to RADIO/CD OFF (DUBB.NOR). 4. Press PAUSE on PLAYBACK/RECORD 1, then press REC.PLAY on PLAYBACK/ RECORD 1 automatically locks down. CAUTION: Do not force down REC. This can damage the recording mechanism. 5. Press PLAY on 2 PLAYBACK. PAUSE on PLAYBACK/RECORD 1 releases and the system copies the tape in 2 PLAYBACK onto the tape in PLAYBACK/RECORD1. NOTES: To monitor the tape while dubbing, adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level. If you monitor the tape while dubbing at high speed, the sound is distorted. To skip an unwanted section during normal-speed dubbing, press PAUSE on PLAYBACK/RECORD 1 while the unwanted section plays. Press PAUSE on PLAYBACK/RECORD 1 again to continue recording. When either tape reaches the end, that deck automatically turns off. If the tape in the other deck has not run out of tape, that tape continues to record or play.
