SCP-59 (140-1099) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9800 SUPPLYING POWER You can power the radio/cassette player from any of three sources: internal batteries standard AC power (with an optional adapter) the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket (with an optional adapter) Using Internal Batteries The radio/cassette player uses two AA batteries for power. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-557. Caution: Do not mix non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries in the radio/cassette player. 1. Pull up the cassette compartment's cover and open the cassette compartment's door. 2. Press the battery compartment cover's tab in the direction of the arrow and lift up the cover. 3. Install the batteries on top of the battery ribbon as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the battery compartment cover and close the cassette compartment's door and cover. Using AC Power To power the radio/cassette player from a standard AC outlet, you need an AC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 273-1654. Notes: Connecting an adapter disconnects the internal batteries. When you are not connecting an adapter to the DC 3V jack, insert the jack's supplied plug into the jack. Cautions: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit your radio/cassette player's DC 3V jack. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the radio/cassette player or the adapter. Always plug the adapter into the radio/cassette player before you plug it into the AC outlet, and always unplug the adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the radio/cassette player. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Insert the adapter's black-tipped barrel plug into the adapter's cord so it reads TIP-NEG. 3. Remove the rubber plug from the radio/cassette player's DC 3V jack. 4. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the radio/cassette player's DC 3V jack. 5. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. Using Vehicle Battery Power To power your radio/cassette player from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket, you need a DC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 270-1560. Notes: Connecting an adapter disconnects the internal batteries. When you are not connecting an adapter to the DC 3V jack, insert the jack's supplied plug into the jack. Cautions: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. You must use a DC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 200 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the radio/cassette player's DC 3V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the cassette player and the adapter. Always plug the adapter into the radio/cassette player before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket, and always unplug the adapter from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the radio/cassette player. Follow these steps to power the radio/cassette player from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. 1. Set the adapter's voltage switch to 3V. 2. Plug the orange-tipped barrel plug into the adapter's cord with the tip set to negative (-). 3. Remove the supplied rubber plug from the radio/cassette player's DC 3V jack. 4. Insert the adapter's barrel plug into the radio/cassette player's DC 3V jack. 5. Plug the other end of the adapter into the vehicle's cigarette- lighter socket. CONNECTING HEADPHONES/SPEAKERS You need a pair of headphones or amplified speakers with a 1/8-inch plug to use the radio/cassette player. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide selection of stereo headphones and speakers. Remove the supplied rubber plug from the PHONES jack and insert the headphones'/speakers' 1/8-inch plug into the player's PHONES jack. Note: When you are not using the PHONES jack, replace the rubber plug. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear outside sounds when listening at normal levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE BELT CLIP For hands-free carrying, slide the belt clip over your belt. To remove the belt clip, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the belt clip. To replace the belt clip, secure it with the screw. (br/all-02/27/95)
