SCP-65 (140-1206) Installation Faxback Doc. # 9852 SUPPLYING POWER You can power your SCP-65 from any of three power sources: internal batteries standard AC power (with an optional AC adapter) your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket (with an optional DC adapter) Note: Connecting an optional adapter disconnects the internal batteries. Using Internal Batteries You need two AA batteries to power the SCP-65. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552. You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also need a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133). Cautions: Do not mix non-rechargeable and rechargeable batteries in the SCP-65. The battery compartment cover is attached to the SCP-65 by a hinge. Do not attempt to remove the cover completely from the SCP-65. Follow these steps to install batteries. 1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it in the direction of the arrow until it stops. 2. Lift up the curved edge of the cover (opposite the arrow). 3. Install the batteries as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. Notes: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Do not mix old and new batteries. 4. Replace the cover. Cautions: NEVER leave dead or weak batteries in the SCP-65. If you do not plan to use the SCP-65 for a month or more, remove the batteries. Dispose of batteries properly; do not bury or burn them. Note: Your SCP-65 is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Using AC Power To power the SCP-65 from an AC outlet, you need an AC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 273-1654. Cautions: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the DC 3V jack on the bottom of the SCP-65. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the SCP-65 or the adapter. Unplug the AC adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug its barrel plug from the SCP-65. Insert the AC adapters barrel plug into the DC 3V jack on the bottom of the SCP-65, then plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. Using Your Vehicle's Cigarette-Lighter Socket To power the SCP-65 from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket, you need a DC adapter (not supplied), such as Cat. No. 270-1560. Cautions: The SCP-65 is designed to work in a vehicle that has a 12-volt, negative ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of system. If you are not sure about your vehicle, check with your vehicle's dealer. You must use a DC cigarette-lighter adapter that supplies 3 volts and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must correctly fit the DC 3V jack on the bottom of the SCP-65. The recommended adapter meets these specifications. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the SCP-65 or the adapter. Unplug the adapter from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket when you turn off the ignition. This prevents your vehicle's battery from being drained if you leave the SCP-65 on when you turn off the ignition. Unplug the adapter from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug its barrel plug from the SCP-65. Insert the DC cigarette-lighter adapter's barrel plug into the DC 3V jack on the bottom of the SCP-65, then plug the DC adapter into your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. Note: If the SCP-65 does not operate when you turn it on, remove the DC adapter from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket and check the socket for debris. Also, check the fuse in the adapter and your vehicle's fuse block. USING HEADPHONES OR SPEAKERS To listen to the SCP-65, you need a pair of headphones (not supplied) or amplified speakers (not supplied) with a 1/8-inch plug and a built-in antenna or a cord that acts as 1/8-inch plug and a built-in antenna or a cord that acts as an antenna. You can find a wide selection of headphones and speakers at your local Radio Shack store. Connecting Headphones/Speakers Insert the headphones' or speakers' 1/8-inch plug into the SCP-65's PHONES jack. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high-volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss. Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause discomfort might still damage your hearing. Traffic Safety Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a bicycle. This can create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a traffic hazard. USING THE BELT CLIP To attach the belt clip to the SCP-65, press the clip's three latches into the corresponding holes on the back of the SCP-65. Then push the clip upward until it locks into place. To remove the belt clip, press down at the point where the clip attaches to the SCP-65, then slide the clip down until it stops. SETTING THE CLOCK 1. Set RADIO/TAPE to TAPE. The display shows AM or PM and the currently set time or 12:00. Note: you can only set the clock when the radio is off. 2. Press MODE twice. AM or PM and the currently set time or 12:00 flashes. Note: If you do not press DOWN/HOUR or UP/MIN. within 10 seconds, AM or PM and the currently set time or 12:00 stops flashing. 3. Repeatedly press DOWN/HOUR until the display shows the correct hour.
