X K Ka Superwide Radar/Front and Rear Laser Detector (220-1655) Installation Faxback Doc. # 18223 MOUNTING GUIDELINES For the best performance, select a location for the detector where it has a direct view of the road. The radar antenna in the detector is at the opposite end from the display and buttons. Select a location for the laser sensor where it has a view both in front of and behind your vehicle (such as near the rear-view mirror). Display Radar Antenna Laser Detection Lens Follow these guidelines when you select a mounting location. Choose a location that does not block the driver's view of the road. Mount the detector in a level position. Since signals are blocked by metal surfaces, the detector's view of the road must not be obstructed by a windshield antenna, wiper blades, ornaments, or metallic sunscreens. Some vehicles have InstaClear or ElectriClear defogging type windshields, which have metal coatings that block signals. General Motor's APV vans have a solar shield that keeps the vehicle cooler during summer months. This shield can also block signals. A detector installed in a vehicle with any of these features will probably not detect a signal. Since window tinting reduces the received strength of laser signals, you should not mount the detector behind any tinted glass. Do not mount the detector where the driver or a passenger might hit it in a sudden stop or accident. CAUTION: Whichever mounting method you choose, place the detector out of view when you leave the vehicle. This keeps the detector out of sight of thieves and prevents exposing it to extremely high temperatures, which can temporarily impair your detector's performance. HOOK-AND-LOOP MOUNTING For some dashboards, the hook-and-loop tape included with your detector might be the best mounting method. Follow these steps to use the hook-and- loop tape. 1. Use a damp cloth to clean both the bottom of the detector and the dashboard. Let both surfaces dry completely. NOTE: The tape's adhesive might not stick to a surface treated with vinyl cleaner or protectant. 2. Peel off the tape's paper backing and stick the tape to the bottom of the detector. On a curved dashboard, use one strip of tape on each side of the bottom of the detector. On a flat dashboard, cut the two supplied strips in half and attach a strip of tape to each corner of the detector. 3. Remove the paper backing from the other side of the tape and press the detector onto the dashboard. VISOR MOUNTING The supplied sun visor clip lets you quickly mount the detector on your vehicle's sun visor. WARNING: Do not mount the detector on a visor if this places the detector near the driver's or a passenger's head. Follow these steps to use the sun visor clip. 1. Snap the sun visor clip onto the top of the detector. 2. Clip the detector over the back of the sun visor. NOTE: If necessary, you can mount the detector upside-down in the visor clip to improve access to its buttons and your view of the indicators. CONNECTING THE LASER SENSOR TO THE DETECTOR You can either connect the laser sensor directly to the detector or connect it using the supplied extension cable and mount it on the windshield using the supplied suction cups. Direct Connection Plug the laser sensor's barrel plug directly into the LASER jack on the detector's right side. If you mounted the detector on the dashboard, insert the laser sensor upward if you mounted the detector on the sun visor, insert the laser sensor downward. Connection with the Extension Cable 1. Insert the extension cable's barrel plug into the LASER jack on the side of detector. 2. Insert the laser sensor's barrel plug into the socket on the other end of the extension cable. Windshield Mounting the Laser Sensor The supplied windshield, mounting bracket and bracket holder let you quickly mount the laser sensor on your vehicle's windshield. Mount the sensor so it has a clear view of the road in front of and behind your vehicle. CAUTION: Some windshields have a plastic inner coating which can be marred or damaged by the suction cups supplied with the windshield mounting bracket. If you are not sure if your vehicle's windshield has this type of coating, check with your vehicle dealer. 1. Insert the supplied suction cups into the holes on top of the windshield mounting bracket, then slide them into the adjoining small holes to lock them. 2. Slide the windshield mounting bracket onto the bracket holder until it clicks. 3. Snap the mounting tabs (inside the bracket holder) into the mounting slots on the sides of the laser sensor. 4. Clean the mounting surface with a damp cloth, then let it dry completely. 5. Firmly press both suction cups against the windshield to secure the windshield mounting bracket. Adjusting the Bracket You can change the angle of the laser sensor by bending the windshield mounting bracket. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the laser sensor, bracket holder, or windshield mounting, always remove the detector and bracket holder from the windshield mounting bracket before you adjust the bracket. 1. Remove the windshield mounting bracket from the windshield. 2. Pull up on one side of the bracket holder to remove it from the laser sensor. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully press the plastic tongue holding the windshield mounting bracket and bracket holder together, then slide the bracket holder out of the windshield mounting bracket. 3. Carefully bend the windshield mounting bracket to suit your installation. 4. Remount the laser sensor. CONNECTING POWER CAUTIONS: The detector is designed to work in a vehicle that has a 12- volt, negative-ground electrical system. Most vehicles have this type of system. If you re not sure about your vehicle, check with your vehicle's dealer. Unplug the power cord's plug from your vehicle's cigarette- lighter socket when you turn off the ignition. This prevents your vehicle's battery from being drained if you leave the detector on when you turn off the ignition. Insert the DC power cord's barrel plug into the power jack on the side of the detector, then plug the DC power cord's cigarette lighter plug into your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. NOTE: If the detector does not operate when you turn it on, remove the DC power cord's plug from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket and check the socket for debris. Also check the fuse in the power cord and your vehicle's fuse block (see "Replacing the Fuse", below). MOUNTING THE CABLE GUIDE CLIPS After you connect your detector to power, you can use the supplied power cable guide clips to route the DC power cord out of your way. Follow these steps to mount the clips. 1. Select where you want to mount the clips, then use a damp cloth to clean the mounting surfaces. Let the surfaces dry thoroughly. NOTE: The clip's adhesive might not stick to a surface treated with vinyl cleaner or protectant. 2. Peel off the clip's paper backing and apply one to each mounting location. 3. Push a section of the DC power cord into each clip. Leave enough slack in the power cord to remove the cord's plug from your vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. REPLACING THE FUSE If the detector stops operating, check the fuse in the DC power cord's cigarette-lighter plug. If it has blown, follow these steps to replace it. 1. Carefully unscrew the tip of the fuse holder. 2. Remove the tip from the fuse holder, then remove the old fuse. NOTE: The tip is in two pieces. Take care not to lose either piece or the spring inside the holder. 3. Replace the fuse with a 2-Amp, 1 1/4 x 1/4, fast-acting fuse (Cat. No. 270-1007). CAUTION: Using a fuse that does not meet these ratings or defeating the fuse protection can damage your detector, the power cable, or the vehicle's electrical system. 4. Press the top of the fuse holder down into the body, then screw it back in. CAUTION: Be sure you press the top of the fuse holder down before screwing it in, or you might damage the fuse holder.
