X K Ka Superwide Radar/Front and Rear Laser Detector (220-1655) Operation Faxback Doc. # 18224 POWER AND SELF TEST To turn on the detector, connect power and turn OFF/VOLUME away from you until it clicks. The detector sounds a distinctive tone for each band and lights all indicators in sequence as a self test. Then all indicators turn off except the P (power) indicator. To turn off the detector, turn OFF/VOLUME toward you until it clicks and all indicators turn off. ADJUSTING THE VOLUME To change the detector's volume, turn OFF/VOLUME either away from or toward you. OPERATING SETTINGS Your detector has two operating modes: city and highway. You can also set the detector to temporarily mute the audio alert and turn off all indicators except the P (power) indicator. City Mode The FCC has allocated X-band signals for non-traffic radar systems such as intrusion alarms, automobile door openers, and microwave traffic signal controllers. Additionally, older or poorly-shielded detectors in other vehicles can sometimes transmit weak radar signals. The city mode reduces the detector's sensitivity to weak X-, K-, and Ka-band signals. This eliminates responses to most false sources. To select the city mode, press CITY/HWY until the C indicator turns on. When you select the city mode, the detector's audio alert and signal strength meter will not alert you unless it receives a strong X-, K-, or Ka-band signal. The city mode has no effect on laser signals. Highway Mode The highway mode provides maximum sensitivity for open-road driving. To select the highway mode, press CITY/HWY until the C indicator turns off. Muting the Audio Alert To temporarily silence the detector at any time, press MUTE until the M indicator turns on. NOTE: Mute has no effect on laser alerts. You can also press MUTE while the audio alert is sounding to silence it. Turning Off the Display To temporarily turn off all indicators except P, press DARK. The P indicator remains on to let you know the detector is receiving power. The detector's audio alert remains active unless you pressed MUTE. To return to the normal full indications, press DARK again. The full laser alert signal appears, even if you have turned off the display. RECEIVING AND IDENTIFYING RADAR AND LASER SIGNALS When you first turn on your detector, it sounds different alert tones in the following order: X, K, Ka, and Laser. When your detector senses a laser or radar signal, it responds with both audible and visible alarms. The audible and visible alarms are different for each type of radar signal received. In addition, the signal strength meter lights more indicators for stronger signals. The audible alert tone pulse rate also increases with signal strength. When the detector receives a laser signal, it flashes all signal strength meter indicators and both X and K indicators at the same time, and sounds a continuous laser alert. When your detector senses instant-on radar, it immediately flashes all of the signal strength meter's lights and sounds three beeps three times within 2 seconds. Then the detector sounds continuous beeps until you pass the radar source. The instant-on radar detection circuit operates in both the highway and city modes, and overrides the mute mode. NOTE: If you set the detector to the city mode and dim the display by pressing DARK, the detector might not give an audible or visible alarm while receiving a weak radar signal. (EB 11/27/95)
