AM/FM Stereo Car Cassette (120-1924) Electrical Connections Faxback Doc. # 19561 Make all electrical connections before installing the unit. If, after reading the following instructions, you are unsure about performing the installation, ... with questions like, "Is my car negative ground? Which cord is the power cable? How do I connect it to the fuse box?" ... we suggest you have the unit installed by a qualified electronic technician. IMPROPER WIRING CAN DAMAGE YOUR VEHICLE'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM This unit is designed for 12-volt DC negative-ground operation. If your vehicle or boat does not provide 12-volt negative ground, you can find the correct adapter at your Radio Shack store. First, make all connections to the 5-pin plug cable assembly as shown in Figure 2. After all connections have been made, double check to be sure they are in the correct order. Then plug the cable into the receptacle on the rear panel. Each speaker must have a separate terminal connection. Be sure to keep the right and left speaker terminal leads seaprated - never interchange these wires. Never connect the terminals of the speakers to a common ground point or to the chassis ground. Always connect the red wire to the ACCessory terminal that can be switched off. If you are replacing a factory-installed radio, do not use the original harness ground wire provided by the car manufacturer. This often does not provide adequate grounding. Connect the radio ground lead (black wire) to the nearest screw which makes solid contact with the metal car chassis. A complete selection of speakers is available at your local Radio Shack store. Antenna Connection If your vehicle has an antenna, pullout the antenna lead from its present connection and connect it to the antenna receptacle on the rear panel of the unit. If an antenna is not installed, visit your local Radio Shack store for a suitable antenna. CAUTION: To avoid unnecessary damage to your car radio, speaker, and/or equalizer/amplifier, make sure all connections are properly insulated and connected according to the following diagram. 1. Connect the RED lead (with in-line fuse holder) to an accessory terminal on the fuse block. This line gives the unit its power when the ignition is turned on. 2. Connect the BLACK (Ground) lead to one of the frame screws of the vehicle. 3. The ORANGE lead in the power harness is a switched power lead to be used with an automatic antenna. 4. Connect the RED/WHITE lead (with in-line fuse holder) to the positive pole of the battery. This line gives continuous power to the memory circuit. 5. Connect the Speaker wires: BROWN: to the "+" side of the right speaker. Normally the terminal has a "+" or a red mark. GREEN: to the "+" side of the left speaker. WHITE: to the minus (-) or unmarked side of the left speaker. GRAY: to the minus (-) or unmarked side of the right speaker. (02/19/96)
