4800 HD (250-3539) Using the VGACONF.EXE Utility Faxback Doc. # 1399 VGACONF.EXE lets you adjust how the computer displays colors as shades of gray on the display, how bold characters are displayed, and several other options that affect the display produced by your computer's VGA system. To start VGACONF, type: CD \CLUTIL VGACONF The main menu appears on your screen. To select a menu item, use the up and down arrow keys to highlight the item. Press . To return to the previous menu, press . If you press at the main menu, you exit the program. DISPLAY STATUS displays the settings for each VGA-CONF option. SELECT OPTION lets you select and change each VGA-CONF option. See "Setting the Options". STANDBY TIMER lets you set the built-in display to turn off if the system is inactive for a period of time. This utility duplicates your computer's automatic screen powerdown function. We recommend you do not change this option. QUIT lets you exit from VGACONF and return to DOS. Setting the Options: Refer to the explanation for each option, and follow these steps to set an option. 1. Start VGACONF at the C:\ prompt by typing: CD \CLUTIL VGACONF 2. Press the down arrow to highlight Select Option. 3. Press . The computer displays a menu of the options you can change. 4. Use the up or down arrow to highlight the option you want to change. Press . 5. Use the up or down arrow key to highlight the setting for the option. Press to select the setting. The new setting immediately takes effect. 6. Press to return to the Select Option menu. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each option you want to change. 7. Press at the Select Option menu to return to the main menu. Press again to exit the program. Setting the Screen Attributes: ATTREMUL (attribute emulation) The computer displays all colors as either black or white on the built-in display. This gives the best contrast for screens that have only two colors -- a screen of text, for example. NOATTREMUL (no attribute emulation) The computer displays color text in shades of gray. This provides the best display for screens which have more than two colors. This is the default setting. BKGND The computer changes the gray shades to improve the clarity of the background. FRGND The computer changes the gray shades to improve the clarity of the foreground. BKFRGND The computer changes the gray shades to improve the clarity of both the background and the foreground. Expanding Screens: EXPAND The computer fills in the screen so the display stretches to the full height of the built-in screen. This is the default setting. NOEXPAND The computer compresses displays that do use the full height of the screen. Setting the Vertical Position: CENTER The computer centers the display portion of the screen. This is the default setting. TOP The computer puts the display portion of the screen at the top. BOTTOM The computer puts the display portion of the screen at the bottom. Selecting the Display Device: PANEL The computer displays only on the built-in screen. This is the default setting. CRT The computer displays only on an external monitor. SIMUL The computer displays on both the built-in screen and an external monitor. Inhibiting Font Loading: INHFONT The computer uses the special font on both the built-in screen and on an external monitor. This is the default setting. NOI The computer uses the standard computer font on the external monitor, and uses the special font on the built-in screen. Changing the Cursor Appearance: FULLHGT Sets the cursor to be a full-height block. NOFULLHGT Sets the cursor to be a small dash. This is the default option. Setting the Gray Scales: This option selects how the computer converts colors to shades of gray. Try each setting until you find the one you consider to be clearest. W592 is the default setting.
