2800 HD (250-3550) Battery Information Faxback Doc. # 1845 Battery Part Number: 25-3556 (available from Tandy Consumer Mail) ┌───────────────────────────────────────┐ │Connecting and Installing the Battery: │ └───────────────────────────────────────┘ There is only one way to properly connect the battery: connect it so that the latch on the battery connector faces upward. To install the battery: 1. Carefully remove the battery compartment lid by pressing the locking tabs and sliding the lid off the computer. 2. Hold the battery so that the electrical leads point downward. 3. Connect the battery so that the latch on the battery connector faces upward. 4. Lower the end of the battery with the wire leads into the computer. 5. Slide the battery forward so that the wires are stored properly, and then lower the rest of the battery into the computer. 6. Replace the battery compartment lid. Battery Removal: CAUTION: Removing power from the computer (turning off the computer or disconnecting the battery when the computer is not plugged in) will delete the contents of the computer's memory. Be careful when removing the battery. 1. Carefully remove the battery compartment lid by pressing the locking tabs and sliding the lid off the computer. 2. Remove the battery from the computer by lifting it out by the wire lead end. 3. Press the latch on the battery connector, and disconnect the battery connector. CAUTION: Improper handling of this lead acid battery can cause a fire, explosion, or severe burns. Never short circuit, disassemble, or heat the battery. Never solder directly to the battery or expose it to water. ┌──────────────────────┐ │Charging the Battery: │ └──────────────────────┘ CAUTION: - Charge the battery for 12 hours inside the computer before using the battery for the first time. If you do not fully charge the battery, its charging potential will be weakened. If you run the computer from battery power, the computer will have up to 2 hours of operating time, depending on the operating conditions. When the battery drains below the power requirements for normal operation, the Power/Low Battery indicator flashes. At this time, either connect the AC adapter and charge the battery or replace the drained battery with one that has been fully charged in the external battery charger. If the battery drains further, the indicator starts blinking slowly. Operating the computer during this warning phase will cause the loss of the computer's memory contents. When charging the batteries, keep the following information in mind: ° You can charge the battery either inside or outside the computer, as described later, with the computer on or off. ° Always keep the battery as charged as possible. If the battery is left uncharged for long periods of time, it will lose its charging potential. Be sure that the battery is fully charged at least once every two months. ° Always plug the AC adapter into the computer before plugging it into the wall. ° Using an AC adapter other than the one supplied will cause the battery or the computer's components to fail. ° When not using the AC adapter, unplug it from the wall. Internal Charging: To charge the battery without removing it from the computer, simply plug the AC adapter into the computer and then into a standard AC wall outlet. Recharging the battery takes approximately 10 hours if the battery's power is low. It takes longer if the computer is operating while the battery charges. External Charging: To use the external battery charger, simply disconnect the battery from the computer and then connect it to the charger. Plug the AC adapter into the charger and then into a standard AC wall outlet. If you obtain a replacement battery, you can charge one battery with the charger while using the other in the computer. Recharging the battery in the charger takes approximately 10-12 hours if the battery's power is low. ┌──────────────────────────────────────┐ │To switch batteries during operation: │ └──────────────────────────────────────┘ 1. Open the battery compartment. 2. Connect the replacement battery to the unused battery connector inside the computer. 3. Unplug and remove the original battery from the computer. Place this battery into the battery charger. CAUTION: Do not leave both batteries connected for an extended period of time. 4. Put the replacement battery into the computer, and replace the battery compartment lid. (rjs-06/10/93)
