SENSATION 2 (250-1651) ADDING A NEW MODEM FAXBACK DOC # 15525 There are two recommended methods that can be used to install a new modem into the Tandy Sensation II Computer. You can either install the modem as COM 1 and disable serial port 1, or you can remove the existing modem and install the new modem as COM 2. Both methods are fairly involved, and require removing the power supply, the original sound card, and the original modem to gain access to the main logic board. If you do not feel comfortable performing this procedure, have your Tandy / Radio Shack dealer or Service Center perform the installation. INSTALLING THE NEW MODEM AS COM 1: 1. Set the new modem to COM 1: (IRQ 4, I/O Port 03F8). This is generally set via switches or jumpers on the modem card itself. 2. Open the case of the computer. On the main logic board, on the right hand side of the riser card (as you are facing the computer from the front) and directly between the power supply and the drive bays is a group of three jumper pin sets, labeled W3, W4, and W5. Jumper W3 reserves IRQ 4 for the main logic board. This is the IRQ used as an industry standard for COM 1:. Jumper W4 reserves IRQ 3 for the main logic board. This is the IRQ used as an industry standard for COM 2:. Jumper W5 reserves IRQ 7 for the main logic board. This is the IRQ used an industry standard for LPT 1:. (These jumpers are also found on the main logic board of the Tandy MMPC-10, MMPC-20, and 3100). To gain access to these jumpers, you must first remove the power supply, then temporarily remove the sound card and modem card. 3. Remove (and / or park) the jumper block located on jumper pin set W3. This will allow a peripheral device (such as the new modem) to use IRQ 4:. 4. Reinstall the sound card, original modem, and power supply. Insure that all cables are connected in their original designations. The Sound Card will make the following connections: RIBBON CABLE: CD-ROM DRIVE CD IN: CD-ROM DRIVE JP 11: J5 ON THE MODEM JP 14: FRONT PANEL CONTROL PC BOARD J 4 (ON DAUGHTER BOARD): FRONT PANEL CONTROL PC BOARD The Orignal Modem will make the following connections: J 3: MAIN LOGIC BOARD SPKR CONNECTOR J 5: JP 11 ON THE SOUND CARD 5. Install the new modem into any unoccupied expansion slot. 6. Boot up the computer. When you see the message "PRESS TO RUN SETUP", press the key. (You can also enter the SETUP program by running the "SETUPROM" program in the \BIN directory of the 3½" SENSATION II startup Diskette). 7. Use the arrow keys to highlight "SERIAL PORT 1 [COM1]. 8. Press the to toggle the option to "DISABLED". 9. Press the key to save the new setting. The computer should boot as normal. The original modem will still be operational as COM 2:, the new modem will now be on COM 1:. If the customer so desires, they can still use the Phone Center Answering Machine software that came with the Sensation II, as long as the original modem is still connected to the telephone line. INSTALLING THE NEW MODEM AS COM 2: 1. In Windows Control Panel, remove the driver "VODAFAX SOUND DRIVER". Exit Windows and shut down the computer. 2. Set the new modem to COM 2: (IRQ 3, I/O Port 02F8). This is generally set via switches or jumpers on the modem card itself. 3. Open the case of the computer. Remove the power supply, sound card and modem card to gain access to the jumper pin sets designated as W3, W4 and W5. 4. Remove (and / or park) the jumper block located on jumper pin set W4. This will allow a peripheral device (such as the new modem) to use IRQ 3:. 5. Reinstall the sound card, and power supply. Insure that all cables are connected in their original designations, except for the cables which connect to the original modem, which can be removed with the modem. The Sound Card will make the following connections: RIBBON CABLE: CD-ROM DRIVE CD IN: CD-ROM DRIVE JP 11: NOT CONNECTED JP 14: FRONT PANEL CONTROL PC BOARD J 4 (ON DAUGHTER BOARD): FRONT PANEL CONTROL PC BOARD It is recommend that you retain the original modem and cables, in case you need to reinstall it. 6. Install the new modem into any unoccupied expansion slot. Boot up the computer as normal. The onboard serial port should still be COM 1:, and the new modem will now be on COM 2:. The Phone Center Answering Machine software that came with the Sensation II will no longer function. NOTE: Due to the frequency of conflicts encountered when using COM 3: or COM 4: (COM 3: and COM 4: use the same IRQ's as COM 1: and COM 2:) it is generally recommended that you do not install any type of communication device as these ports. Also, some may argue that the W3 or W4 jumpers do not need to be pulled to be able to install a modem as COM 1: or COM 2:, due to the fact that the option is also in the SETUP. The option in the SETUP program merely turns off the onboard serial ports. The IRQ's used by these ports are still reserved for the main logic board if these pins are not pulled. Therefore, if they remain in their original settings, you are in essence sharing the IRQ between the modem and the main logic board, which will provide intermittent operation at best. To insure reliable performance, you MUST remove these jumpers. (RDS 4/17/96)
