It interfaces between standard or ENHANCED IDE drives and the VL-Bus to support 16-Bit and 32-Bit data transfer. Available in two versions, the core of the card is its Enhanced IDE capabilities, and options are available for high speed FIFO UARTs and SPP/ECP/EPP parallel port support. What is ENHANCED IDE? ENHANCED IDE was developed by a group of companies including Western Digital & Microsoft with the aim of enhancing the IDE standard for VL-bus and PCI-Bus computer systems. Its main features are the ability to support 4 devices (including ATAPI standard CD-ROM), up to 8.4GB capacity and up to 13MB/sec data transfer speeds. It also has a feature called LBA (Logical Block Address). When used with a true Enhanced hard drive & Enhanced system BIOS this will add plug & play features to a system. It will read your hard drive type and adjust the system BIOS automatically. (With LBA you do not need to set the hard drive 'type/cylinder/heads' etc in the STANDARD CMOS setup of your system BIOS). Although an ENHANCED IDE card is designed to work with ENHANCED Hard Drives and systems, it can also work with standard hard drives/systems. Users wishing to use Enhanced IDE to the full extent should ensure they have (1) an Enhanced Hard Drive and (2) the system (Motherboard) BIOS to support Enhanced IDE. Below is a table which explains the capabilities of Enhanced IDE in two different environments. ┌───────────────┬─────────────┬────────────────┬──────────────────────┐ │FEATURE │ Enhanced │ Non-Enhanced │ Remarks │ │ │ System BIOS │ System BIOS │ │ ├───────────────┼─────────────┼────────────────┼──────────────────────│ │Up to 4 devices│ Yes │ Yes │ Driver needs to be │ │ │ │ │ installed │ │Over 528MB HDD │ Yes │ No │ Need an Enhanced │ │ │ │ │ System BIOS │ │LBA Mode │ Yes │ No │ Need an Enhanced │ │ │ │ │ System BIOS and True│ │ │ │ │ Enhanced Hard Drive │ └───────────────┴─────────────┴────────────────┴──────────────────────┘ (CC/tmc-12/04/95)
