IBM Aptiva M71 (250-0444) Video Interface / Video Memory Faxback Doc. # 17875 Video Interface Your system board comes with two external video memory module sockets (Socket 1 and Socket 2). You can upgrade the video memory to a maximum of 2 MB. To upgrade video memory, you MUST INSTALL TWO VIDEO MEMORY MODULES. You cannot install a video memory module in one socket and leave the other socket empty. NOTE: ┤Each Memory Module you install must have these │ │specifications: 40-pin, surface mount package │ │(SOJ), 256K x 16, 70 nsec, dual CAS DRAM │ │The IBM part number is 92G7443. │ NOTE: ┤Before you turn your computer off, you must set │ │the video resolution to 640x480x16 (VGA) in OS/2 │ │Warp. │ Installing Video Memory To upgrade video memory, follow these steps: 1. One end of the video memory module will have a dot, notch, bevel or any combination. Locate the dot, notch or bevel on the video memory module. 2. The socket of the video memory location has one corner of the socket angled. This angled corner is equivalent to Pin 1 or the end that is notched, or dotted. Position the end of the memory module that has the dot, notch or bevel to coincide with the angled corner of the socket. 3. Align the rounded pins on the sides of the memory module with the grooves in the memory module socket. 4. Press straight down firmly on the module to insert it into the socket. A properly inserted module will sit completely inside the socket. 5. Reinstall any hardware removed to access the video memory module sockets. NOTE: ┤When you have finished installing additional │ │video memory modules, you must re-install the │ │video drivers in OS/2 Warp. │ Reinstalling Video Drivers in OS/2 Warp You must reinstall the video drivers when you install additional video memory. To reinstall the video drivers in OS/2 Warp, follow these steps: 1. Double-click on the OS/2 System icon on the OS/2 Desktop. 2. In the "OS/2 System" window, double-click on the Command Prompts icon. 3. Double-click on the OS/2 Window icon. 4. At the C:\ prompt, type: CD TRIDENT.OS2 and press . 5. Type: INSTALL and press . The "Trident Display Drivers Installation" window appears. NOTE: ┤The "Trident Display Drivers Installation" note- │ │book automatically opens to the Screen section. │ │If you accidentally open another section, just │ │click on the SCREEN tab to get back to the │ │correct page. │ 6. In the "Screen resolution" box, click on one combination of screen width, screen height, and number of colors (for example, 640x480x256). 7. Click on the tab marked "Refresh". The Vertical Refresh rates will be displayed. 8. Click on the down arrow in the Vertical Refresh Rate box for the resolution you will use. When you see the list of refresh rates, click on the one you will use. Click on INSTALL. 9. When the "Trident Display Installation" window with the message "Installation has been completed..." appears, click on OK. 10. When the C:\ prompt reappears, type: EXIT and press . 11. Shut down OS/2 Warp and reboot (restart) your computer. Video Adapter Cards When you install a video adapter card, you do not need to reset (move) jumpers on the system board. The builtin video controller will be disabled automatically. However, you may need to set jumpers on the video adapter card. (CSC/all-09/14/95)
