TRC-465 (210-1567) Operation Faxback Doc. # 14600 Caution: Use your CB with the correct kind of antenna. NOISE AND THE SQUELCH CONTROL You seldom notice noise on AM and FM radios (except when tuning between stations), because signals from radio stations are broadcast continuously. Noise is more obvious on CBs because the broadcasts are intermittent. When properly adjusted, the SQUELCH control eliminates or reduces this unwanted noise between transmissions. See "Receiving" to set the squelch control. RECEIVING Follow these steps to prepare your CB for receiving transmissions. 1. Set the CB-PA switch to CB. 2. Turn the RF GAIN control all the way to the right. 3. Turn the SQUELCH control all the way to the left. 4. Select the mode of operation -- AM, LSB, or USB. 5. Turn the OFF/VOLUME control to the right to turn on the CB. 6. Adjust the volume to a comfortable listening level. 7. Use the channel selector to select a channel. 8. Slowly turn the SQUELCH control to the right until you do not hear background noise when voice transmissions are not present. This allows you to hear normal voice transmissions. To receive very weak signals, turn the SQUELCH control all the way to the left. You hear noise between transmissions, but you also hear weak transmissions (those not strong enough to break through the squelch). USING THE CLARIFIER CONTROL When listening to an SSB signal, turn the CLARIFIER control to tune in slightly off-frequency stations, or to tune out adjacent channel interference caused by a station on the next channel. USING THE ANL NB/OUT SWITCH If your reception is disturbed by interference from impulse type noise (ignition noise and other electrical noise), set the ANL NB/OUT switch to ANL NB to reduce or eliminate the noise. USING THE RF GAIN CONTROL When you receive an extremely strong signal (signal meter indicates "OVER"), turn the RF GAIN control to vary the overall volume instead of using the VOLUME control. USING THE TX POWER METER The meter indicates the strength of the signal you are receiving or transmitting. A built-in AMC (automatic modulation control) circuit prevents your transmitter signal from over modulating and distorting. NOTES ON SSB RECEPTION When you first listen to an SSB signal, you probably will not be able to understand it; the voice might sound distorted or low and guttural. In either case, slowly turn the CLARIFIER control to bring the signal into its natural voicetonal range. If the voice is still not intelligible, it might be an SSB signal operating on the other sideband -- try the other SSB mode. An SSB signal produces a fluttering, unintelligible sound when received in the AM mode. Set the mode switch to either LSB or USB, and adjust the CLARIFIER control. You can tune AM signals when the mode switch is in the USB or LSB position. Tune the CLARIFIER control to eliminate the steady tone caused by the AM carrier signal. TRANSMITTING Follow these steps to prepare your CB for transmitting. 1. Be sure every control is in proper position (CB-PA, USB-AM-LSB). 2. Select a channel 3. Hold the microphone 2 or 3 inches from your mouth. Press and hold the microphone's talk button and speak in a normal voice. The TX indicator lights. USING THE PA AMPLIFIER Your CB has a build-in PA (public address) amplifier. With an optional PA speaker, you can turn your radio into a mobile public address system. To use the PA amplifier: 1. Connect an external PA speaker (available at Radio Shack stores) to the PA jack on the back of the CB. The speaker should be at least 6 feet from the CB. Note: You connect the PA speaker and external speaker to different jacks. 2. Set the CB-PA switch to PA. 3. Hold the microphone 2 or 3 inches from your mouth. Press and hold the microphone's talk button and speak in a normal voice. The TX indicator lights. 4. Turn the VOLUME control for desired volume level. If you hear a high- pitched squeal, adjust the VOLUME control until the squeal stops. USING THE CB AS A BASE STATION We designed your CB for mobile use. However, you can use it as a CB base station. For base installation, you need: 12-volt DC power supply (such as Cat. No. 22-504) Base station antenna (such as Cat. No. 21-967) External 8-ohm speaker (such as Cat. No. 21-549) Mount the antenna and speaker as described in their manuals. Connect the antenna to the ANT jack on the back of the CB. Connect an external speaker to the EXT jack on the back of the CB. Plug the power cord's single connector into the DC POWER jack. Connect the red wire to the positive (+) terminal of your power supply. Connect the black wire to the negative (-) terminal of the power supply. Operation of the CB is the same whether you use it as a base station or as a mobile radio. WARNING: When installing or removing base-station CB antennas, use extreme caution. If the antenna starts to fall, let it go. It could contact overhead power lines. If the antenna touches the power line, contact with the antenna, mast, cable, or guy wires can cause electrocution and death. Call the power company to remove the antenna. DO NOT attempt to do so yourself. (/all-04/14/95)
