48 Inch Fiber Glass Whip Antenna (210-0934) Features Faxback Doc. # 19453 This is a standard four foot helical stick--the standard antenna for truckers. It terminates in a 3/8" x 24" stud, which is an industry standard. Therefore, it fits a wide variety of mounts. Most manufacturers wind the fiberglass element with wire (to get the tuning right) and then cover the wrapped wire with heat shrink. The benefits of this type of process in manufacturing these is the cost of doing so is low. The negatives are that the wire can be easily cut or disturbed by anything that hits the antenna in use. With trucks, this happens all the time. The Radio Shack 210-0934 uses a more costly process to manufacture the fiberglass element. This process is called "Pull Extrusion". In this process, the wire is permanently captured inside the fiberglass. The final element is smooth. There is no visible wire or shrink wrap and the element and its critical tuning can never change. It is a far better design than the process used by a lot of the other manufacturers. NOTE: Radio Shack manufactures all its fiberglass sticks this way. (IR-01/08/95)
