Sound Bat II (600-4137) Battery Faxback Doc. # 15966 NOTE: The Sound Bat II requires eight AA batteries (not supplied), and the transmitter requires one 9-volt battery (not supplied). POWER THE SOUND BAT II CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. NEVER leave dead or weak batteries in the Sound Bat II. If the Sound Bat II will not be used for several days, take out the batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. Installing the Sound Bat II Batteries To power the Sound Bat II, you need eight AA batteries. We recommend alkaline batteries, such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552, or rechargeable batteries, such as Cat. No. 23-125. NOTE: If you use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, you also need a battery charger. See "Charging Nickel-Cadmium Batteries." CAUTION: Do not mix nickel-cadmium batteries with other batteries, such as standard type or alkaline batteries, or nickel-cadmium batteries that have different capacities. 1. Be sure the Sound Bat II's ON/OFF switch it set to OFF. 2. Slide the battery compartment's latch from LOCK to OPEN. Then remove the cover. 3. Insert eight AA batteries in the compartment, as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) inside the compartment. 4. Replace the cover and lock the latch. CHARGING NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES You must charge rechargeable batteries before you can use them to power the Sound Bat II. To charge them, you need a nickel-cadmium battery charger, such as Cat. No. 21-516. WARNING: Do not try to recharge alkaline or other non-rechargeable batteries. They might explode. CAUTION: The battery charger must supply 18 volts, its center tip must be set to positive, it must deliver at least 50 milliamps, and its plug must correctly fit the Sound Bat II's charging jack. The recommended charger meets these requirements. Using a battery charger that does not meet these requirements could seriously damage the Sound Bat II, the battery charger, or the batteries. Your local Radio shack store can help you find the right charger. 1. Be sure the Sound Bat II's ON/OFF switch is set to OFF. 2. Remove the charging jack's cap. Then insert the charger's barrel plug into the Sound Bat II's charging jack. 3. Plug the charger into a standard AC power outlet. 4. Charge the batteries for 14 to 18 hours. CAUTION: Charging batteries for longer than 16 hours can damage them. 5. Unplug the charger from the AC outlet first. Then unplug it from the charging jack and replace the jack's cap. NOTE: Occasionally, let the nickel-cadmium batteries fully discharge before you recharge them. Otherwise, the batteries lose their ability to fully charge. IMPORTANT: Your Sound Bat II is capable of using rechargeable nickel- cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collections centers, and mailback programs. Installing the Transmitter's Battery You need a 9-volt battery for the transmitter. We recommend an alkaline battery, such as Cat. No. 23-553. Follow these steps to install the transmitter's battery. 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by sliding it in the direction of the arrow. 2. Put battery in the compartment. Be sure to match the + and - symbols. 3. Replace the cover. Be sure it snaps shut. If the Sound Bat II's motor runs by the Sound Bat II will not move, replace the transmitter's battery. (ALL-07/18/95)
