Radio-Controlled Sneaker III (600-4144) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 16978 INSTALLING THE BATTERIES The Sneaker III requires eight AA batteries and the transmitter requires one 9-volt battery. You must use alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-652) or rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23-125) to power your Sneaker III. If you use nickel-cadmium batteries in the Sneaker III, you also need a battery charger. CAUTIONS: Do not mix old and new batteries, non-rechargeable batteries, with rechargeable batteries, or rechargeable batteries of different capacities. Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Never leave dead and weak batteries in the Sneaker III. If you do not plan to use the Sneaker III for several days, remove the batteries. Dispose of batteries promptly and properly; do not bury or burn them. Sneaker III 1. Set OFF/ON on the top of the Sneaker III to OFF. 2. Turn the battery compartment cover's latch in the direction of the arrow. Then remove the cover. 3. Insert eight AA batteries in the Sneaker III as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the cover and close the latch. Transmitter 1. Set OFF/ON on the top of the Sneaker III to OFF. 2. Press down on the transmitter's battery compartment cover and slide it off the direction of the arrow. 3. Install one 9-volt battery (Cat. No. 23-553) as indicated by the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 4. Replace the cover. Using Optional Nickel-Cadmium Batteries You can also operate the Sneaker III with rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries such as Cat. No. 23-125, and charge the batteries with a battery charger, such as Cat. No. 21-516 or 23-249. WARNING: Do not try to recharge alkaline or other non-rechargeable batteries. They might rupture or explore. CAUTIONS: The battery charger must supply 18 volts, its center tip must be set to positive, it must deliver at least 50 milliamps, and its plug must correctly fit the Sneaker III's charging jack. The recommended chargers meet these requirements. Using a battery charger that does not meet these requirements could seriously damage the Sneaker III, the batteries, or the battery charger. If you use an external battery charger to recharge the batteries, you must remove the batteries from the Sneaker III to charge them. Charge the batteries before use. You can charge them in the Sneaker III without removing them. Be sure OFF/ON on the top of the Sneaker III is set to OFF. Remove the charging jack's cap, then plug the charger's barrel plug into the recharging jack on the bottom of the Sneaker III. Charge the batteries for 14 to 16 hours. CAUTION: Do not overcharge them. NOTE: Occasionally, fully discharge nickel-cadmium batteries before you recharge them. Otherwise, the batteries lose their ability to fully charge. IMPORTANT: The Sneaker III is capable of using rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. At the end of the batteries' useful life, they must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact your local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curb-side collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs.
