AFX-150 (430-1240) Operation Faxback Doc. # 14117 During normal operation, the fax switch monitors the telephone line. When a regular call comes in, the fax switch directs the call to your telephone or answering machine. If you answer the call and the call is a regular call, talk as usual. If you answer the call and you hear fax alert tones (tones that indicate the incoming call is a fax call), you can let the fax switch direct the call to your fax machine or you can simply press # and then 1 on your phone's handset and hang up. The fax switch directs the call to the fax machine. If the answering machine answers the call and the call is a regular call, the answering machine records the caller's message as usual. If the answering machine answers the call and the call is a fax call, the fax switch listens for fax alert tones. When these tones are detected, the fax switch directs the call to your fax machine. If you answer the phone and the caller wants to send you a fax manually, you or the caller can activate your fax machine by pressing # and the 1 on their or your touch-tone telephone. If you press the wrong key, wait about 10 seconds before you try again. The fax switch lets you use your phone's * and # keys for other functions, such as computer banking. The fax switch activates your fax machine with these keys only if you press # and 1 at the beginning of a dialing sequence. You can manually activate your fax machine by pressing # and then 1 any time after you pick up the phone, or during your conversation if you made the phone call. You can also activate your fax machine if your telephone uses a rotary (pulse) dialing system. Dial 2 or tap the switchhook (or FLASH button) twice. This works only if the rotary phone is on the same line as the fax machine. When your fax machine is in use, the POWER ON/BUSY LED flashes. NOTES: If your fax machine has a delayed ring (or answer) feature, set it to minimum delay so that it is compatible with the fax switch. If an extension telephone on the same line as the fax switch in use, the fax switch does not allow the fax machine to access the telephone lines. This ensures that regular phone calls in progress are not interrupted by outgoing fax transmissions. If you have a telephone built into your fax machine, you need to manually push the receive button on your fax machine when you want to receive a fax during a regular telephone call. USING THE FAX SWITCH WITH A ANSWERING MACHINE When you use the fax switch with an answering machine, be sure to set the ring selector switch to a number higher than the answering machine's ring number setting. For example, if you set your answering machine to answer calls after the 4th ring, set the ring selector switch to the 5th-ring, 7th-ring, or infinite setting. See "Setting the Ring Selector Switch." We also suggest that you provide instructions in your outgoing announcement about how callers can activate your fax machine if they want to send you a fax. Here is a sample announcement: "Hello! You have reached Acme Generic Products. Please leave your name and phone number at the tone. We will return your call. If you want to send us a fax and you have a touch-tone phone, press the pound sign and then one on your telephone, to activate our fax machine. Thank you for calling." Note: To help your fax switch detect fax alert tones, we recommend you record your outgoing announcement at a lower volume level than usual. MULTI-LINE TELEPHONE SYSTEM INSTALLATIONS If you have a multi-line KSU telephone system, you need to connect the fax switch and your fax machine directly to the telephone network side of the KSU system. The fax switch does not function properly if you connect it to the user's side of the KSU system. Carefully follow the installation diagram shown below to connect the fax switch to the telephone network. There is no convenient way to provide Line In Use lamp status to the KSU because you must connect the fax switch and your fax machine directly to the incoming phone line. OPTIONAL VOICE DATA GUARD The VDG (Voice Data Guard), such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 43-107, prevents interruption of fax transmissions caused by another telephone device on the same telephone line as the fax machine. You can use the VDG for the following purposes: When you use cordless telephones, extension telephone speed dialers, computer modems, or other related telephone devices on the same telephone line as your fax machine. If your answering machine is too far away to easily connect to the AFX-150's ANS jack. When you install the fax switch on a multi-line key system unit (KSU) telephone system. To install a VDG module, follow the instructions provided with the module. (TK/all-03/13/95)
