TAD-1000 (430-0740) Operation Faxback Doc. # 15253 SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS To set the TAD to answer calls, press ANSWER. The TAD says, "Answer calls." Record messages (or Play announcement)" and the ANSWER light turns on. NOTES: You must record an outgoing announcement before you can set the TAD to answer calls. When you set the TAD to answer calls and some messages are already recorded, the display might flash while it "compacts" memory to allow more message storage. The TAD will not answer calls until this compacting is finished. The delay can last up to 2 minutes. To avoid this delay, review and erase all messages before setting the TAD to answer calls. After the TAD is set to answer calls, it briefly displays a number between 0 and 99. This is the percentage of memory available to store messages. If the TAD's memory is more than 75 percent full, the TAD says, "Memory Below" and announces the percentage of memory remaining. If the TAD answers when memory is full, it beeps three times then waits 10 seconds for the caller to enter the remote operation security Code. The TAD cannot record additional messages until you erase some old ones (see "Erasing Messages"). NOTE: After all the messages in a mailbox play, the TAD is no longer set to answer calls. You must press ANSWER again. SETTING THE TAD NOT TO ANSWER CALLS To have the TAD not answer calls, press STOP/NO until the TAD says "Answer off" and announces the time and date. ANSWERING CALLS After the TAD answers a call, the outgoing announcement plays, at the end of the announcement, the caller must press a number (1-3) before the TAD beeps to select a user mailbox, or wait until the beep to leave a message in User Mailbox 4. After the set time limit (30 seconds or 2 minutes), the TAD beeps, stops recording, and resets to answer the next call. The beep is recorded on the tape. NOTES: If the caller does not begin speaking within 7 seconds after the beep or pauses for 7 seconds during recording, the TAD stops recording, beeps once, and resets for the next incoming call. If the TAD reaches 100 percent full while a caller is recording a message, the TAD stops recording and beeps several times. SCREENING CALLS To screen your calls, let the TAD answer calls for you and wait to hear the caller's message. If you decide to answer the call, pick up any phone connected to the same line as the TAD. The TAD stops recording and resets to answer the next call. NOTE: If you pick up the phone just as the TAD answers, the TAD might not stop. If this happens, hang up the phone and then pick it up again. PLAYING MESSAGES If there are new messages the user has not heard, the user's light flashes until that user plays all the new messages. The display shows the total number of messages. The TAD stores each message in one of the four message areas, depending on which user mailbox the caller selected. To play back messages, press PLAY1, PLAY2, PLAY3, or PLAY4. If there are no messages stored for the specified user, the TAD announces "No messages, Answer off." If the user has messages, the TAD announces the number of messages (if less than 60). Before playing each message, the TAD announces the message number and the time, day, and date each message was recorded. Adjust VOLUME as necessary. After all that user's messages play, the TAD beeps three times, says "End of messages. Answer off," and the TAD is no longer set to answer calls. To set the TAD to answer calls again, press ANSWER (see "Setting the TAD to Answer Calls"). NOTE: After the messages play, the TAD saves all the messages until you erase them (see "Erasing Messages"). Repeating Messages If, while playing a message, you want to hear it again, press REPEAT once. The current message plays back from the beginning. To play a previous message, press REPEAT again until you reach the desired message. If you press REPEAT at the beginning of the first message, the TAD announces "First message" and continues playback from the beginning of the message. Skipping Messages To skip to the next message during playback, press NEXT/YES once. The next recorded message plays. If you press NEXT/YES during the last message, or if all the user's messages have been played, the TAD beeps three times and says "End of messages. Answer off." Double Speed Playback While a message plays, you can, at any time, press PLAY2 to hear the message played back at twice the recording speed. This lets you quickly scan a message or move to any place within a message. To resume normal playback, press PLAY1. ERASING MESSAGES When memory is more than 99 percent full, you must erase some old messages before new ones can be recorded. Erasing a Single Message 1. Press PLAY1, PLAY2, PLAY3, or PLAY4 to play back the messages in the desired user group. 2. Press ERASE MSG when the TAD begins to play back the message you want to erase. The TAD stops playback and says "Enter yes to confirm." 3. Press NEXT/YES to erase the message, or any other key to cancel. The message resumes playback, but the message is removed from the user's total number of messages. Erasing All Messages Follow these steps to erase all messages for a single user. 1. Press ERASE MSG. The TAD says "Enter user." 2. Press PLAY1, PLAY2, PLAY3, or PLAY4 to select which user's messages to erase. If there are new (unplayed) messages for that user, the TAD says "Error, new messages" and cancels the erase procedure. If all of the user's messages have been played, the TAD says "Enter yes to confirm." 3. Press NEXT/YES to erase all messages for the selected user, or any other key to cancel. NOTE: If you erase all messages and the TAD tells you memory is low, press ANSWER to clear the memory and reset the TAD to 99 percent memory available. RECORDING A MEMO Follow these steps to record a memo for one of the four TAD users. 1. Press MEMO. The RECORD light flashes and the TAD says, "Enter user." 2. Press PLAY1, PLAY2, PLAY3, or PLAY4. The TAD says, "Record memo," beeps and turns on the selected user's light. 3. Record your memo. Press STOP/NO when you are finished. The memo is added to the user's mailbox and is played back when messages are played. NOTE: If memory is full, you must erase messages before recording a memo (see "Erasing Messages"). REMOTE OPERATION While you are away from your home or office, you can use a touch-tone phone or pocket tone dialer to do any of the following: Set the TAD to answer or to not answer calls Play your messages Play your announcement or record a new announcement Monitor the room where the TAD is installed. NOTE: If you plan to check your messages by long-distance, set ANSWER to TOL S to avoid unnecessary long-distance charges (see "Setting the Answer Switch"). REMOTELY SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS If you leave your home or office without setting the TAD to answer calls, you can set it remotely from any phone. To set the TAD to answer calls, dial the phone number and let the phone ring until the TAD answers (about 1 minute). During the announcement, you can hang up the phone and the TAD is ready to answer calls. Or instead of hanging up, you can retrieve messages or enter other remote commands (see "Using Remote Commands"). USING REMOTE COMMANDS To operate the TAD from a remote location, follow these steps. 1. Dial the phone number. 2. When the announcement begins, press *. The TAD says, "Enter code." 3. Enter your two-digit remote operation security code. Be sure to press each key for at least a half second. The TAD says, "Enter user." 4. Enter a user number (1, 2, 3 or 4). NOTE: If you do not enter the correct remote code followed by a valid user number within 10 seconds, the TAD says "First error." If you enter an incorrect remote code or user number the second time, the TAD says "Second error." If you make a third unsuccessful attempt, the TAD completes the announcement and records your call as an incoming message. 5. The TAD tells you the current message count for the user you selected, plays that user's messages, and says, "Enter command or star for help." You can then enter a new command or press * for help (see "List of Remote Commands"). NOTES: If you do not enter a command within 10 seconds, the TAD hangs up. If you enter the correct code, but the TAD does not accept it, the code might have reset to the default (11) because of a long power failure. Try entering 11 as the security code (followed by the user number). If this works, when you return to the TAD's location, replace the backup batteries and reset the remote operation security code (see "Setting the Clock, Calendar, Record Time, and Remote Code").
