TAD-274 (430-0760/A) Installation Faxback Doc. # 15790 RINGER EQUIVALENCE NUMBER We have designed the TAD to conform to federal regulations and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each telephone or telephone device that you connect to the telephone line draws power from the telephone line. We refer to this power draw as the device's ringer equivalence number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of the TAD. If you use more than one telephone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, your telephones might not ring. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. FCC STATEMENT The TAD complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must, upon request, provide the FCC registration number and the REN to your telephone company. Both numbers are shown on the bottom of the telephone. NOTE: You must not connect the TAD to any of the following: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key telephone systems WARNINGS: To prevent fire or shock hazard, and damage to your telephone, do not expose it to rain or moisture. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT REMOVE COVER (OR BACK). NO USER-SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVICING TO QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSONNEL. CONNECTING TO PHONE POWER LINES You can set the TAD on a desk or mount it on a wall. Select a location that is near a modular phone jack and an AC outlet, and away from normal activities. NOTE: If you do not have a modular phone jack, you can either update the wiring yourself or have the phone company update it for you. Radio Shack stores sell the jacks and adapters you need. The telephone company will charge you for the installation of the jacks. The telephone company will ask you for the USOC number of the jack to be installed. The number is RJ11C for a baseboard jack or RJ11W for a wall jack. CAUTION: You must use an AC adapter that supplies 9 volts and delivers at least 300 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to positive and its plug must correctly fit the TAD's DC 9V jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications could seriously damage the TAD or the adapter. Desk-Top Connection Follow these steps to use the TAD on a desk. 1. Place the TAD on a desk, table, or shelf. 2. Plug the supplied, long modular cord into the TAD's phone line jack and into a modular phone line jack. 3. Plug the supplied AC adapter's barrel plug into the TAD's DC 9V jack. Then route the cord through the strain-relief slot. 4. Plug the adapter's other end into a standard AC outlet. The TAD beeps and the MESSAGE indicator blinks. Wall-Plate Connection Wall plates are available at your local Radio Shack store. To install a wall plate, follow its instructions. Follow these steps to mount the TAD on a wall plate. 1. Set the TONE/PULSE switch. See "Setting the Dialing Mode." 2. Insert the supplied bracket into the slots on the bottom of the TAD as shown. 3. Plug the supplied adapter's barrel plug into the DC 9V jack. Then route the cord through the strain-relief slot. 4. Plug the supplied, short modular cord into the TAD's phone line jack. Then route the cord through the channel on the bottom of the TAD. 5. Plug the other end of the phone cord into the wall plate's phone line jack. 6. Align the TAD's keyhole slots with the wall plate's studs and slide the TAD down until it rests on the studs. 7. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. The TAD beeps and the MESSAGE indicator blinks. 8. Remove the handset holder by sliding it toward the switchhook. Rotate the holder and replace it so you can hang the handset on the base. Wall-Mounting Connection Follow these steps to mount the TAD directly on the wall. 1. Set the TONE/PULSE switch. See "Setting the Dialing Mode." 2. Drill two holes in the wall - one above the other - 3 15/16 inches apart. Then thread screws (not supplied) into the holes until the heads extend about 1/8 inch from the wall. 3. Insert the supplied bracket into the slots on the bottom of the TAD, as shown in Step 2 in "Wall-Plate Connection." 4. Plug the supplied adapter's barrel plug into the DC 9V jack. Then route the cord through the strain-relief slot. 5. Plug one end of the supplied, long modular phone cord into the TAD's phone line jack. The route the cord through the channel on the bottom of the TAD. 6. Plug the other end of the phone cord into a modular phone line jack. 7. Align the TAD's keyhole slots with the screws and slide the TAD down until it rests on the screws. 8. Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet. The TAD beeps and the MESSAGE indicator blinks. 9. Remove the handset holder by sliding it toward the switchhook. Rotate the holder and replace it so you can hang the handset on the base. See the illustration for Step 8 in "Wall-Plate Connection." CONNECTING THE HANDSET CORD Plug one end of the supplied coiled cord into the jack on the handset. Then plug the cord's other end into the jack on the left side of the TAD. Radio Shack stores sell longer handset cords. A long cord is especially useful if you mount the TAD on a wall. INSTALLING THE CASSETTE TAPE An MC-30 cassette tape (15 minutes recording time per side) is supplied. You can buy additional and longer tapes at your local Radio Shack store. Follow these steps to install a cassette tape. 1. Take up any slack in the cassette tape by turning the hub with a pencil. Avoid touching the tape. If you do not remove excess slack, the tape might become tangled in the tape mechanism. 2. Open the cassette compartment door. 3. Insert the cassette tape with the full reel toward the TAD's buttons and the open edge to the left. 4. Close the cassette compartment door. (llg/all-06/26/95)
