TAD-274 (430-0760/A) Operation Faxback Doc. # 15792 PHONE OPERATION Place and answer phone calls as you would with any normal phone. SETTING THE RINGER'S VOLUME Set RINGER to HI in a noisy room, such as the kitchen. Set it to LO in a quiet room, such as a bedroom. If you do not want the ringer to sound, set RINGER to OFF. If you hear another pone ring on the same line, you can still answer the phone. You can also still make calls. REDIALING The redial memory holds up to 32 digits in pulse dialing and 31 in tone dialing, so it can store long-distance numbers as well as local numbers. To redial the last number dialed, pick up the handset and press REDIAL. NOTES: The TAD also redials PAUSE and LDT entries. For information, see "Using Pause" and "Using Tone Services on a Pulse Line." If you dial more than 32 digits, the TAD does not store any of the digits in redial memory. PUTTING A CALL ON HOLD To place a call on hold, tell the person you are placing them on hold and press HOLD. The HOLD indicator lights. Then do one of the following: Set the handset on its cradle. The call does not disconnect. To release the call from hold and continue your phone conversation, pick up the TAD's handset or another phone's handset on the same line. Hold the handset or set it next to the TAD. You might hear the other person, but they cannot hear you. To release the call from hold and continue your phone conversation, press down the switchhook for at least 1 second and release the switchhook. USING PRIVACY If you want to speak with someone in the room without being heard by the person on the phone, press and hold down PRIVACY. Release PRIVACY to resume your phone conversation. USING FLASH Many special phone services require a switchhook signal. The FLASH button provides the electronic equivalent of a switchhook operation. For example, if you have call-waiting (a special service available from some phone companies), you can put a call on hold and take a second phone call by pressing FLASH. Press FLASH again to return to the first call. NOTE: If you do not subscribe to a special service that uses the switchhook signal, do not press FLASH during a call, because your call might disconnect. USING PAUSE If your phone system requires an access code (such as 9) for outside numbers, the pause feature is helpful for redialing and memory-dialing. When you dial an outside number or store an outside number in memory, press PAUSE after the access code. When you redial or memory dial, dialing pauses for 2 seconds at the pause entry. This gives the outside line time to connect. If you need a longer pause, press PAUSE additional times. Each pause entry causes a 2-second pause. USING TONE SERVICES ON A PULSE LINE If you have pulse service, you can still use special services that require tone signals, such as bank-by-phone. Follow these steps. 1. With TONE/PULSE set to PULSE, dial the service's main number. 2. When the service answers, pres LDT. 3. Follow the normal procedure for the special service you are using. The additional numbers you dial are sent as tone signals. When you hang up, the TAD automatically returns to pulse service. To redial a number that includes the change from pulse to tone dialing, be sure TONE/PULSE is set to PULSE. The press REDIAL. The TAD automatically dials the pulse numbers, changes to tone dialing, and dials the tone numbers. MEMORY DIALING After you store a phone number in memory, you can quickly call the number by entering its memory location number. You can store up to 20 phone numbers. Storing Numbers in Memory Each memory location can store up to 16 pulse digits or 15 tone digits. Each PAUSE and LDT entry counts as one digit. For information about PAUSE and LDT entries, see "Using Pause" and "Using Tone Services on a Pulse Line." 1. Remove the memory directory from under the TAD's base. 2. Pick up the handset. 3. Press STORE. You can still hear a dial tone from the handset. NOTE: If more than a half a minute passes while you are storing a number, the phone company's message might turn on to tell you to hang up your phone. This is normal. Continue storing the number. 4. Enter the phone number you want to store, including any PAUSE and LDT entries. 5. Press MEMORY. 6. Enter a two-digit code from 01 to 20. 7. Write the person's or company's name in the appropriate space on the memory directory. 8. To store more numbers, repeat Steps 4 through 7. 9. When you finish storing numbers hang up the handset. Dialing a Stored Number Follow these steps to dial a number stored in memory. 1. Pick up the handset and wait for a dial tone. 2. Press MEMORY. 3. Enter the two-digit memory location code for the number you want to call. Testing Stored Emergency Numbers If you choose to place test calls for stored emergency numbers, follow these guidelines: Remain on the line and briefly explain to the operator the reason for the call before you hang up. Make these calls in off-peak hours, such as early morning or late evening. Storing/Chain-Dialing Special Service Numbers When you store the phone numbers for special services (such as alternate long-distance or bank-by-phone), we recommend you store the service's phone number in one memory location and store additional information in another memory location. NOTE: For security reasons, we recommend that you do not store your personal identification number in memory. Follow these steps to memory-dial a special service. 1. Lift the handset. 2. Press MEMORY. 3. Enter the memory location code for the special service. 4. When the service answers, enter your personal identification number. Press MEMORY, then enter the memory location code for the additional information. ANSWERING SYSTEM OPERATION SETTING THE TAD TO NOT ANSWER CALLS When you install the TAD and record the OGM, the TAD is automatically set to answer calls. If you do not want the TAD to answer calls, press ANSWER ON/OFF so the MESSAGE indicator turns off. The TAD does not answer calls, but you can still use all the phone features as usual. SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS If you have set the TAD to stop answering calls and want it to begin answering calls again, press and release ANSWER ON/OFF so the MESSAGE indicator lights. The TAD plays the OGM. NOTE: If the TAD beeps 3 times after you set it to answer, check to see if you recorded an OGM. The TAD cannot answer phone calls until you record an OGM. SCREENING CALLS To screen your calls, let the TAD answer the calls. You can listen to the caller's message through the TAD's speaker. If you decide to answer the call, do one of the following: If you are at the TAD, pick up the handset. The TAD stops recording and you can talk to the caller. If you are not near the TAD, pick up the handset on any other phone on the same phone line. If you have tone service, press (*) star on the phone. If you do not have tone service, set your phone's TONE/PULSE switch to TONE. Then press (*) star. The TAD stops recording and you can talk to the caller. If you want to answer calls from certain people, see "Using Call Breakthrough." USING CALL BREAK-THROUGH (CBT) If you want to screen your calls but be sure to answer calls from a certain person, give the person your call break-through (CBT) code. Tell them to enter the code after your OGM. The CBT code is set to 456 at the factory. To change the CBT code, see "Changing the Security or CBT Code" under "Using Remote Operation." When a caller enters the CBT code, the TAD alerts you with a pattern of two beeps and a pause. Pick up the handset to answer the call. The TAD stops recording and you can talk to the caller. If you do not pick up the handset after about 1 minute, the TAD hangs up. PLAYING MESSAGES If there are any phone or memo messages recorded on the TAD, the MESSAGE indicator blinks. The number of blinks between pauses indicates the number of recorded messages. It can blink for up to 15 messages. If the tape is full, the MESSAGE indicator continuously blinks. To check your messages from a remote location, see "Using Remote Operation." To play messages at the TAD, press PLAY/REW. The TAD plays all the messages. Adjust VOLUME to the desired level. After each message, the TAD announces the day and time. After the last message plays, the TAD sounds two short beeps and stops. The MESSAGE indicator continues to blink to show the TAD saved the messages. To pause the tape during play, press ERASE/STOP. Press PLAY/REW to resume play or press ERASE/STOP again to fast-forward to the end of the last message. If you do not resume play within 3 minutes, the TAD automatically fast-forwards the tape to the end of the last message. During play, you can press and hold down PLAY/REW to rewind or MEMO/FF to fast-forward the tape. NOTE: The TAD automatically saves messages until you set it to record new messages over the old ones. ERASING MESSAGES NOTE: Be sure you have played all the messages before you erase them. When you are ready to erase your messages, press and hold down ERASE/STOP until the TAD beeps. The tape rewinds to the beginning so new messages record over the old ones. RECORDING A MEMO Follow these steps to record a reminder for yourself or a message for someone in your home or office. 1. Press and release MEMO/FF. The TAD beeps and the MESSAGE indicator lights. 2. Begin recording the message. Speak in a strong voice from about 16 inches away from the microphone. The message can be up to 2 minutes long. 3. When you finish speaking, press ERASE/STOP. The TAD plays the memo along with any phone messages. RECORDING A PHONE CONVERSATION You can record both sides of a phone conversation from any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. NOTE: Federal, state, and local laws and telephone tariffs regulate the use of recording devices to record telephone conversations. Some state and local laws and telephone tariffs require you to have the consent of all parties to the phone conversation before you record the conversation. Check federal laws, your state and local laws, and telephone tariffs for applicable requirements. It is unlawful to use this TAD to record conversations on a party line, because it records all telephone conversations. Follow these steps to record during your phone conversation: 1. Set VOLUME to its lowest setting. 2. Press and hold down MEMO/FF. After about 2 seconds, the TAD beeps and the MESSAGE indicator lights. 3. Release MEMO/FF. To stop recording, hang up the handset or press ERASE/STOP. Be sure to return VOLUME to its previous position. POWER FAILURE If you disconnect the TAD from power or if a power failure occurs, the TAD saves the phone numbers stored in memory and the CBT and security codes for about 8 hours. However, you must reset the clock. Otherwise, future messages do not include a time/day stamp. If you are not sure whether you need to reset the clock, press TIME SET. If the clock is set, the TAD announces the day and time. If you need to reset the clock, the TAD sounds three beeps. If the TAD is without power for more than eight hours, phone numbers are no longer stored in memory and the CBT and security codes reset to their factory settings. As soon as power is restored (regardless of how long the TAD is without power) the TAD plays the backup OGM from the tape and records it onto the RAM chip. Therefore, you do not need to make a new OGM after a power failure. In addition, the TAD saves any recorded messages on the tape. When power is restored, the MESSAGE indicator flashes to indicate the recorded messages. USING REMOTE OPERATION When you are away from your home or office, you can use any phone to set the TAD to answer calls. With a touch-tone phone (or pulse phone and pocket tone dialer), you can also do the following from a remote phone: Change the security and call breakthrough (CBT) codes. Set the TAD to stop answering calls. Play your messages. Record a memo. Play the OGM. Record a new OGM. Monitor the room where the TAD is located. Remote access requires the security code, which is preset to 789. For the best protection, we recommend you change the security code as described in "Changing the Security or CBT Code." Remote Answer-On To use a remote phone to set the TAD to answer, dial your phone number. After about 75 seconds, the TAD beeps. Enter the security code. The TAD beeps, plays your OGM, and beeps again to confirm that it is set to answer calls. Hang up or enter remote control commands, beginning with the Step 3 under "Using Remote Control Commands." Using Remote Control Commands Follow these steps to use remote control commands. 1. Dial your phone number. 2. After the OGM plays, enter the security code. See ("Changing the Security or CBT Code"). The TAD beeps. 3. Press the number for the function you want. See "Remote Control Command Descriptions." If you fast-forward the tape to its end, the TAD sounds the command prompt. 10 = Room Monitor Press to monitor the room where the TAD is located. After 60 seconds, monitoring automatically stops. After the first 45 seconds of the 60-second limit, the TAD beeps to warn you that time is almost up. To continue monitoring the room, press 0 again. NOTE: If you do not press 0 to continue monitoring, the TAD hangs up. Using the Tollsaver If there are no messages recorded on the tape, the TAD answers after 5 rings. After the TAD records a message, it answers after 2 rings. This lets you avoid unnecessary toll charges when calling by long-distance to check your messages. If you hear more than 2 rings, you know there are no messages. You can hang up so you will not be charged for the call. NOTE: If the tape is full, the TAD answers after about 75 seconds. You might want to explain this feature to other members of the family and frequent callers so they understand why the number of rings varies. Changing the Security or CBT Code The security code is set to 789 at the factory. The CBT code is set to 456. Follow these steps to change a code. 1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 in "Using Remote Control Commands." 2. After the beep, press #1 to change the security code or press #2 to change the CBT code. 3. Enter a new three-digit code. 4. Press #. The TAD beeps again. You can hang up the phone or use any other commands. Returning to the Factory Codes If you changed the security or CBT code and forgot the new code, press and hold down ERASE/STOP and OGM at the same time until the TAD sounds a long beep. The security and CBT codes reset to the factory preset numbers. The factory preset for the security code is 789. The preset CBT code is 456. We do not expect you to have any problems with your TAD, but if you do, follow the suggestions in this section. If you still have problems, take the TAD to your local Radio Shack store so our personnel can assist you and arrange for service if needed.
