DuoFone 600 Voice Dialing Phone (430-0650) Installation Faxback Doc. # 17913 The phone is packaged with the following items: phone base, handset, AC adapter, coiled handset cord, a long 7-foot telephone line cord for desktop installation. You will need both a modular telephone jack and an electrical outlet near the place you have chosen to install your telephone. The phone has a special back plate that allows it to be mounted on the wall or to sit on a desktop. You must remove the back plate to change the batteries and to connect or disconnect the AC adapter or the telephone line cord. Remove the Back Plate Place the phone base face down on a covered surface. With your right thumb in the large, center, rectangular slot, firmly slide the back plate about 1/8 inch to the right while lifting it to release the inner latch. Listen for a "click" or snapping sound as the back plate is released from the phone base. Replace the Batteries To retain its memory, the phone requires continuous power. When it is completely without power, it forgets everything-all voice names, directory entries, and speed dial numbers. If you are replacing old batteries, be sure the adapter is connected and plugged in so that previously learned names and numbers are not forgotten. Low Batts- appears on the display when the batteries are low. Fresh batteries offer about 72 hours of backup power. Under normal use with the AC adapter, batteries will last as long as their shelf life, about 2 years. NOTE: Disconnect the telephone line cord when inserting or changing batteries. 1. With the back plate removed, locate the battery compartment on the bottom side of the phone base. Slide the hatch cover in the direction of the arrow and remove any old batteries 2. Insert four new AAA alkaline batteries (Cat. No. 23-555), matching positive and negative terminals. Replace the hatch cover NOTES: Be sure the AC power is connected when changing batteries. Use only AAA-size alkaline batteries. Replace all four batteries when the window displays the message LOW BATTS Remove batteries and disconnect the AC adapter before storing the phone for a long period of time Connect the AC Adapter and the Telephone Line Cord 1. Plug the AC adapter cord into the round jack on the phone base. 2. Anchor the adapter cord by threading it under the tabs in the channel. 3. Plug and anchor the telephone line cord into the phone jack in the phone base. NOTES: Do not attempt to operate the phone using only the AC adapter or on the batteries alone. The batteries provide backup power in case of a power outage or when you need to move the phone. Always use the AC adapter and batteries If the AC power is disconnected and batteries are dead, you can still use the phone as you normally would without voice dialing functions. DESKTOP INSTALLATION If you will be mounting the phone on a wall, skip this section and proceed to "Wall Mount Installation." 1. Replace the back plate by inserting the latch at the wide end of the plate into the slot near the top of the base. 2. Slide the plate to the right while pressing down to snap the lower latch into place. 3. Plug the 7-foot telephone line cord into the modular jack. To finish the installation, proceed to "Complete the Assembly." WALL-MOUNT INSTALLATION To connect the phone to a wall jack, you must reverse the back plate so the wide end is at the bottom of the phone base. Also, you must reverse the handset hook so the handset can rest vertically. 1. With the wide end of the back plate resting near the bottom of the phone base, thread the short 5 1/4 inch telephone line cord (RS Cat. No. 279390) through the hole in the center of the back plate, keeping about half of the line cord anchored in the channel. 2. Replace the back plate by inserting the latch at the wide end of the plate into the slot near the bottom of the phone base. 3. Slide the plate to the left while proceeding down to snap the upper latch into place. The telephone line cord should extend about 1 inch from the back of the plate. 4. With the base close to the wall, carefully plug the line cord into the wall jack. 5. Line up mounting studs with the holes in the back plate. Press the base against the wall and slide the base down, securing the back plate holes into the studs. Once the base is in place, you must reverse the special hook in the handset cradle that holds the handset in a vertical position. 1. While depressing the hook switch, slide the handset hook toward the top of the phone. 2. Remove the hook and rotate it so that the lower lip is now pointed upward. 3. Depress the switchhook and slide the hook down into place. the lip should extend into the handset cradle. COMPLETE THE ASSEMBLY 1. Plug the AC adapter into the wall socket. 2. Plug the coiled handset cord into the base. 3. Adjust the display by tilting it to one of its four settings so it is easily seen from the desktop or wall-mount position. (/all-11/08/95)
