TAD-539 Telephone Answering System (430-0765) Answering Machine Operation Faxback Doc. # 18737 RECORDING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can set the TAD to answer calls, you must record an outgoing message, the announcement that the caller hears when the TAD answers a call. The maximum length for your outgoing message is 30 seconds. CAUTION: To protect your home or office from theft, do not tell callers that you are away. Instead, say you cannot come to the phone. Follow these steps to record the announcement. 1. Press and hold down ANN until the TAD begins to rewind the tape. 2. When you hear a long beep, record your outgoing message. Speak in a normal tone of voice, about 12 inches from the front of the TAD. NOTES: The TAD records the outgoing message on its microcassette. Since the TAD uses the tape as its memory, it records its own messages on the tape for use during operation or after a power failure. Wait until the machine stops fast-forwarding, rewinding, and playing before pressing another button. If you do not wait, the buttons have no effect. 3. Press STOP/ERS to end your outgoing message. If you do not press STOP/ERS within 30 seconds, the TAD automatically stops. The TAD beeps once and automatically plays your outgoing message. CHECKING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE 1. Press ANN. The TAD plays the outgoing message. 2. Adjust VOL on the right side of the TAD. This does not affect the volume of the message on the telephone line. SETTING THE TAD TO ANSWER CALLS If the answer indicator lights steadily or flashes, the TAD is set to answer calls. When you press ANS, the TAD sounds a beep, rewinds to the beginning of the incoming messages and enters the answer mode. The answer indicator flashes to indicate the number of recorded messages (see "Playing Messages"). If you do not want the TAD to answer calls, press ANS so the answer indicator turns off. Press ANS again to set the TAD to answer calls. NOTES: The answer indicator flashes while the TAD answers a call and records a message. When the caller hangs up, when 60 seconds elapse, or when there are more than 8 seconds of silence, the TAD hangs up and resets to answer the next call. After the TAD records a message, it rewinds to the beginning of the tape to update its backup information. If the tape becomes full while a caller is leaving a message, the TAD sounds four beeps and hangs up. The answer indicator repeatedly flashes four times. When the tape is full, the TAD answers after two rings and sounds eight beeps instead of playing the message. SCREENING CALLS If you want to screen incoming calls while you're at home, let the TAD answer the call for you. When the caller stars speaking, let the TAD record the message. Or, to talk to the caller, pick up the TADs handset or any phone connected to the same phone line as the TAD. Press STOP/ERS on the TAD to have the TAD stop recording and reset to answer the next call. NOTE: To automatically stop the TAD when another phone is picked up, you can connect a voice/data guard (Cat. No. 43-107) between the modular phone jack and the TAD-539. PLAYING MESSAGES When you have messages, the answer indicator flashes slowly to show the number of recorded messages. For example, if you have three messages, the indicator flashes three times, pauses, again flashes three times, etc. To play back the recorded messages, press PLAY/FF. The TAD rewinds the tape and plays the messages. At the end of each message, the TAD sounds one beep. The messages are saved until you erase them (see "Erasing Messages"). REWIND AND FAST-FORWARD To replay a message while the tape plays, press and hold down MEMO/REW. The tape automatically stops at the beginning of the tape or when you release MEMO/REW, and begins to play. To fast-forward the tape, press and hold down PLAY/FF. You can hear sound as you fast forward. The tape automatically stops at the end of the messages or begins normal play when you release PLAY/FF. ERASING MESSAGES NOTE: Be sure you have played all the messages before you erase them. Play the incoming messages. Within 8 seconds after the messages end, press STOP/ERS. The TAD beeps once and rewinds to the beginning of the incoming messages. The answer indicator lights steadily, and the TAD resets for the next call. New messages record over the old ones.
