TAD-539 Telephone Answering System (430-0765) Installation Faxback Doc. # 18740 READ THIS BEFORE INSTALLATION We have designed your TAD to conform to federal regulations, and you can connect it to most telephone lines. However, each device (such as a telephone or answering machine) that you connect to the telephone line draws power from the line. We refer to this power draw as the device's Ringer Equivalence Number, or REN. The REN is shown on the bottom of the phone's base. If you are using more than one telephone or other device on the line, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five, the telephones might not ring and the answering machine might not answer. In rural areas, a total REN of three might impair ringer operation. If ringer operation is impaired, remove a device from the telephone line or contact the phone company for information about boosting the ringer power on your line. FCC STATEMENT Your TAD complies with Part 68 of FCC Rules. You must upon request, provide the FCC registration number and REN to your telephone company. Both numbers are shown on the bottom of the TAD. NOTE: You must not connect your system to: Coin-operated systems Party-line systems Most electronic key phone systems INSTALLATION You must complete the following steps to install the TAD: Select a location Connect the handset Install a cassette tape Program a security code when you connect power Set the dialing mode Set RINGER SELECTING A LOCATION You can place the TAD on a desktop or table or mount it on a wall. Select a location that is near a modular telephone jack and an AC outlet, and away from normal activities. NOTE: If you do not have a modular phone jack, you can either update the wiring yourself or have the phone company update it for you. Your local Radio Shack store sells the jacks and adapters you need. The telephone company will charge you for the installation of the jacks. The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJK11C for a baseboard jack or RJ11W for a wall jack. There is a handset holder on the top of the base. When the phone is mounted on a wall, this handset holder allows you to temporarily hang the handset without disconnecting the call. The handset holder below the switchhook keeps the handset from falling off when you mount the TAD on a wall. When the TAD is placed flat on a desk or table, be sure to hold the upper part of the handset so you can easily lift it. Desktop Connection To use your TAD on a desk, table, or shelf, plug one end of the supplied telephone cord into the TEL.LINE jack on the top of the TAD. Then plug the other end into a modular phone jack. Mounting on he Wall Follow these steps to mount the TAD directly on the wall or on a wall plate. NOTES: To mount the TAD directly on a wall, use the two supplied screws with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the back of the base and the supplied mounting bracket. Your local Radio Shack store sells the accessories required for wall mounting. Drill two holes 3 15/16 inches apart, then thread the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about 1/8-inch from the wall. To mount the TAD on a wall plate, you need a short modular telephone cord. Your local Radio Shack store sells a variety of telephone cords. 1. Install the wall-mount bracket on the bottom of the TAD. 2. Plug one end of the supplied modular cord (for mounting directly on the wall) or the short modular cord (for mounting on a wall plate) into the TEL. LINE jack on the back of the TAD. Then route the cord through the channel on the bottom of the TAD. 3. Plug the other end of the cord into a modular phone jack. 4. Place the keyhole slots of the base and bracket over the screw heads or wall plate's studs, and press down on the TAD to secure it. CONNECTING THE HANDSET Plug one end of the handset cord into the jack on the TAD's left side. Plug the other end into the jack on the end of the handset. Then place the handset on the cradle. INSTALLING THE CASSETTE TAPE Your TAD is supplied with an MC-30 tape (15 minutes recording time per side). You can buy additional and different length cassettes at your local Radio Shack store. 1. Turn the supplied cassette's hub counterclockwise with a pencil to take up any tape slack. 2. Lift the handset. 3. Lift the cassette compartment cover to open it. 4. Install the cassette in the compartment with the cassette's open end toward the front of the TAD and the full reel to the right. NOTES: Replace the tape at least once a year, or more often if it is used heavily. When fully rewound, the full reel should be on the right. If it is not, the TAD rewinds the tape when you connect power. 5. Close the cover. 6. Replace the handset. (br/SP-1/16/96)
